Thanks for this! Our dog (Cusco) has a lot of Vet anxiety, and we generally have had to pre-medicate her and put a muzzle on her for Vet visits. One thing the Vet tried at a recent visit worked incredibly well. They needed to draw blood for here annual physical, and when Cusco saw the Vet tech with the syringe in her hand, she freaked out. There was no way she was letting that person near her! The Vet had a towel that was sprayed with a calming phermone, and she put that towel over Cusco's head, so Cusco couldn't see the Vet tech approaching with a needle. Cusco immediately calmed down, and the tech was able to lift up her leg and draw the blood with no problem! Since then, we have had several more visits to check for a chronic cough, and the towel trick has worked to allow the Vet to listen to Cusco's chest breathing with the stethoscope. It is really an amazing tool!

Do you have to count the calories of the pepper in the daily food allotment? If so, how do you figure out how many calories are in a pepper or in anything else you feed your dog?
@spiritdogtraining4 күн бұрын
Your vet should be able to help you figure out how many calories your dog should be eating in a day, and then their kibble and/or wet food will say on the label the calorie count. According to a quick Google, Bell Peppers have 20-30 calories each depending on size!

Thanks. I live in a place where many people let there dogs run off leash most of the time. My dog is 20#, which is small around here, so I'm often fending off a much larger dog. When there's been a negative interaction, the other dog owner has said their dog is reacting badly because my dog is on a leash. Ironic, eh? Is there any truth to that?
@spiritdogtraining5 күн бұрын
I'm so sorry to hear this! I can only imagine how stressful and frustrating that must be! While leashes can cause some tension in greetings, it is absolutely not the fault of the dog on leash. Off leash dogs should be under verbal control at all times and not running up to dogs on leash!

I've found that my sometimes reactive dog is totally fine with passing people on trails as long as they don't talk to him or reach out their hand. I think my body language is usually pretty clear that a stranger should not approach him -- I do try to put him on the other side of me. I love it when people ask if they can say hi. I usually say that he's wary of strangers, but I think that saying he's in training is so much better. Because, of course, I hope he will become more comfortable with these sorts of interactions over time. And once he knows someone, he really is as sweet as he looks. Thanks for the video.

Hi There! Do your dogs have any reactivity issues at the moment? Or is it more about keeping unknown dogs away?

@@spiritdogtraining Both dogs have reactivity issues. I have been working through your courses and my older dog has been able to recondition her response when she sees other dogs (she looks at me for a treat and will obey "leave it" if we are not too close to the dog. But my younger dog is only about halfway to what the older dog does. I always have to step away from the path, or cross the street to put as much distance as I can between the other dog and my dogs. If the other dog so much as lunges or barks at my dogs, all good behavior is lost, unless we are all the way across the street.

@@plusfc When we are at that stage, then, where one of our dogs has not progressed as far as the other, we actually don't recommend walking them together. We want to start by working with each dog individually in the early stages of training. This way, all your attention can be on each individual dog, and you can adjust as needed. Every dog will progress at a different speed. Once each dog is doing well on their own, we can work to incorporate them together.

Great tip. And do you recommend we train our dogs to walk on BOTH sides, not just the traditional left side? What do you do if your dog walks ahead because he is more interested in “being the leader” and scouting out iwhat interesting things might be ahead ( a person, another dog, a cat etc). then getting the treat? He often will control things by returning to his side position when he wants a treat, then forge ahead again..
@spiritdogtraining10 күн бұрын
I think in general it's up to personal preference- as long as you are consistent with your dog not pulling, your dog can walk on either side, both sides, in front, or behind- we just have to make sure they understand the criteria of don't pull! It's just a little easier to make sure they understand the criteria when we teach them on one side close to us :)

Will work on this with our 5 month old Havanese puppy who is motivated by companionship more than anything at this time. We also recognize when he is stressed by environment and have been able to reduce that with giving him high value treats while sitting on a bench in a noisy environment first for 5 minutes or less and then la bit longer, always saying 'Cars and trucks". Everything loud and clanking with motors or without is called cars and trucks and now he just relaxes (took two weeks of daily work) and is able to move on with a sniffy walk even past construction zones. Doing the same now with dogs and people with great success using a cheerful "dogs and peeps" while petting him and acting like it's the most normal thing in the world. Being non food motivated, he does well with calmness from us and the verbal naming situations, removing him immediately when we see signs of stress and repeating this every day, twice a day. Thanks for this video. It helped me understand how to perhaps make him more interested in food as a motivator. We took our farm pup home to an unfamiliar and loud urban environment when he was 3.5 months home so did not have the opportunity to socialize him to noise from 8 weeks onward so it's been a bit more challenging and is taking a lot of work everyday. If I was not at home al day I would reconsider taking on any puppy I could not afford to hire a trainer for.
