Thanks to your suggestions and reasons for them we had a most successful family Christmas gathering. Our blue heeler was excited to see guests arrive but big improvements on calming down quickly after that. Licky mat during dinner and treats in a box during present sharing brought him into the circle. Five small children present and he remained calm throughout. Thank you for all your great advice!

Is it EVER ok to "test," such as when just trying to incorporate some exercise into the day? If my dog already knows a skill reliably, how do I continue to "train it"?
@spiritdogtraining
@spiritdogtraining 6 сағат бұрын
If a dog knows a skill we can utilize it as needed, and incorporate practicing it into thought out/planned training sessions! It's just asking randomly for a bunch of cues that usually doesn't count much for training!

We work from home and customers are coming to our doors very often. Toby was always first at the door and we couldn't open the door. I started to saying stay, just to get his attention. I didn't even use any treats and now he waits next to the door without any problem. I haven't even realised that I trained him and forgot to give him reward. I am a bad mum. 😜 Now, we will start with proper stay training to teach him staying anywhere not just next the door. Thank you.😍

We can take our dogs and put them in a calming space by guiding them there with a leash if we need to and then providing them enrichment toys in the area. If this is something they really struggle with we can also work towards it for next year as well!

Thank you! As someone who is normally home with my dog Christmas is tough. Parties to attend, shopping to do, etc means a lot of time away from home and mine does not like that and stresses even before I leave. There’s also deliveries, and people stopping by, so doorbell ringing causing barking. Any suggestions would be greatly appreciated! Merry Christmas!

So helpful - thank you! So true about the dogs having such distinct personalities. I train them separately unless we are working on wait your turn and when that is the case, I use simple exercises that they already know very well. Sit for example, because the one that has my 'attention' isn't actually the one being trained. And I know that they are both distracted on some level so I keep it very short and easy....All things learned from SpiritDog ❤🐕

@@willene9370 I had the same issue. What helped me - aside from following @spiritdogtraining (and I SWEAR I’m not a plant 🤣 ) was shifting my own mindset. The dog that I’m basing the duration of training on is the one that is left inside. I started thinking of it like the one that’s actually getting trained is the one that gets “left behind” And it took me months to finally get it through my head that 2 minutes is PLENTY training- less is sometimes better. I honestly didn’t believe that and I was also impatient thinking I could get them trained faster by working longer. That mistake cost me months, probably. I also had to shift my mindset around not feeling like a horrible dog mom if the dog left inside was whining. Both of us needed to SLOWLY increase our tolerance for our respective discomfort. I needed to be attentive to when she went from “sad” to triggered and out of her little mind with separation anxiety (before I learned that she would sometimes throw herself at the door so hard I thought she was going to knock it down <~ my fault entirely). Lots of short training sessions (sometimes 15-20 SECONDS) with long breaks in between got us all past that SO. MUCH. FASTER. It really is as simple as Steffi says. Also just to be clear- I’m not a trainer, I just have 2 GSDs that I absolutely adore so if anything I offer contradicts Steffi - listen to her, not me 🤣 Good luck! Take your time, you’ve got this!

Hi There, Thanks for reaching out- I'm so sorry to hear this! That sounds like a case of reactivity escalating to redirections. For something like this we always recommend reaching out and working alongside of a qualified trainer local to you in person. Ideally this person should have a background with this sort of behaviour. This way, they can meet you and your dog personally and observe the behaviours you are seeing and help and come up with a training and management plan to move forward. Safety is always our main priority and there are simply too many variables that need to be taken into consideration to help over the internet.

My cattle dog has gotten into a routine when let out to pee in the backyard, of first going around the corner of the house to bark at the neighbors house (where 4 dogs live but are inside ther house not barking), then goes to another corner of the yard to barks at anyone who MIGHT be walking around the block, and now just keeps barking - often while she's doing her business. How to curtail this if we are not right there? I now put her out and make her sit at the door while I surround her with treats - she doesn't get to collect them until I shut the door (I started this to break the spell of shutting door resulting in body slamming..). And then she goes around the corner and starts the noisy routine.. we often knock on the window when she begins barking (does this acknowledge her "work"?) and my spouse will call at her from inside (which who knows if she can hear him, but I do 🙄) Suggestions?

I am in the early stages of training a rescue border collie with lead reactivity using similar methods to those you describe. We cannot always avoid situations which trigger outbursts but I have noticed that if our dog is allowef to carry a ball he redirects onto the ball. I have also used ball chasing as a distraction and reward if he does not react. However he can become over excited and ball obsessed. Could this be making the reactivity worse? Thanks. (He was kept in a house and garden for 2 years without going for walks)
@spiritdogtraining
@spiritdogtraining 9 күн бұрын
Hi There! So the ball can be a great management solution for some dogs that are really ball crazy, so they can be a great tool for getting our reactive dogs out of tight situations. However, as you mentioned, it can get some of our dogs almost more worked up. So really we would want to look at if they are getting too excited in these situations, in which case the ball may not be best until further along in training.

Agree 100%! Our (highly) reactive Mexi-mutt super Nova 1yr. old, has improved 50% since we adopted her when she was 4-5 months old. Aside from managing our environment, the scatter feeding in the yard & indoor sniffle mats has worked wonders to achieve these results so far!

this is why I'm glad I have a dog who is too big and too stubborn to do anything he doesn't wanna do. The only way to get him to do anything is to teach him so he understands what you want, and really motivate him to do it. If he does anything I say, he does it extremely well and consistently, and he's adaptable about how he gets it done when there are unexpected obstacles. I think dogs who react to food lures without thinking definitely have some advantages when it comes to learning new skiĺls, because you can build up the muscle memory and neural connections before they ever know they're learning a skill, and when they finally make the decision to try it, they literally get it right the first try because they've been training it for days or weeks without ever knowing it. My dog doesn't have that advantage, but he has the advantage that he actually has to work though how to learn things by himself, and that gives him a kind of intelligence and independent decision making capability that other dogs don't have, as well as the ability to come up with really hilarious and stupid solutions to problems, which is fun to watch.

THIS is what I've been thinking every time I saw someone's dog is keep on following the owner with that "give me treat" look. The dog is not engaging in the walking/knowing the environment but just the treats, which makes the walking quite meaningless.

Ah, this is why people say that their dogs were great in the training group, but continued to react after the training. I've had to let my rescue go, he actually pulled me down the street on my face. My trainer, who uses your technique is sick . The last event on my face was so bad I daren't go out again. When I'm ready, I'll get a smaller dog from a more honest rescue charity ( they said he was much smaller and lighter) that at least I can start working with. ( Heartbroken).

I focus on a three phase approach, Avoidance to get them back to an even keel, then a Awareness phase where we stay far enough away that the dog can be calmly aware of the trigger (and get a low potency reward like praise), and then a Challenge phase where the dog has the choice to get a bit closer to a trigger and get a potent reward, remain where they are and get a reward like from the previous phase, or retreat a bit if they need to. Engagement stuff is for when all my planning and management fails and we get blindsided. It's plan B to get out of a difficult situation, then a bit of Avoidance for a few days before back to the plan. As you point out, it never solves the underlying problem. But all too often I see engagement done as the training, steak as a lure to counter condition. And there I see people try to get the dog to love the trigger by extensive use of treats. My goal is just a calm awareness of the trigger. Turning triggers into nothing burgers.
@spiritdogtraining

Yes, management is a super important part of it all- engagement can certainly have a time and place, but we certainly need to focus on the root cause above all else and addressing that!

Your timing is incredible! My reactive acd/aussie has been doing so well - virtually no reactions in weeks, but this morning on a walk with friends we had 3 bikes come right up behind us and ring their bells (oddly none of us heard them coming). He had a mild reaction, I think mostly to mine, then passing an aggressive looking dog he lost it (the woman said ”it’s my dog”), then a person leading a horse followed us (he’s terrified of horses but didn’t react), then he had a full-on reaction when a cute labradoodle came toward us. The last reaction was out of character and I know it was stacking. And this is usually a quiet area but today it was a mine field 😬 I was feeling completely demoralized until I saw your video. I’m not over it yet but we’ve had a scatter in the yard and a play with his favourite toy and am starting to feel better. Thank you so much for reminding us training doesn’t always go in a straight line, and we’re all doing the best we can ❤️

I have 2 reactive dogs, rescue sisters that are Aussie Shepherd / GSD crosses (4 years old). They have 2 types of reaction - people who come to the door (you'd think it was a home invasion every time!) and other large dogs (not small ones) when we are on walks, especially using the leash. I do all the things you say at the moment but I live alone and work so I have to take them both with me when on walks, I can't leave one behind so I can concentrate on training the other one :( I just want to find an effective way of pre-empting the reactive barking when they see another dog. We already have walking to heel (so I'm in front), the favourite squeaky toy and turning around and walking away tactic, but they're always watching out of the corner of their eye. I know we'll get there eventually but it really is a labour of love! Ps. Great video!

My friend has a very reactive dog. She has tried so much and right now has him in a special training class. He is not food motivated at all. So using a snuffle mat or a lick mat or even a chew toy doesn’t work with him. He just wants to stay by her which would be fine, except for his outburst of barking, which seemed to have no cause. Any other thoughts?
