Law enforcement officers should be required to have at minimum a bachelors degree with their major being law and their minor being sociology. This career comes with complete autonomy, power, weapons, strong union representation, with the ability to effectively change someone’s life, or take someone’s life and that should be taken as seriously as becoming a lawyer, MD, nurse, etc. Annual mandatory extensive psych evaluation, mental health assessment, physical exam, and de escalation techniques. End qualified immunity and require mandatory personal coverage insurance. Require community hours where they interact with the communities in which they serve. More training is required of a cosmetologist than a cop, and that’s absolutely ridiculous. When you invest time and money in your career you tend to take it seriously. The few months here and there are not sufficient enough to weed out the bad apples that are cops. Many times officers don’t even truly know the laws that they are enforcing.
