In October 1962, an American U-2 spy plane secretly photographed nuclear missile sites being built by the Soviet Union on the island of Cuba. President Kennedy did not want the Soviet Union and Cuba to know that he had discovered the missiles. He met in secret with his advisors for several days to discuss the problem. After many long and difficult meetings, Kennedy decided to place a naval blockade, or a ring of ships, around Cuba. The aim of this "quarantine," as he called it, was to prevent the Soviets from bringing in more military supplies. He demanded the removal of the missiles already there and the destruction of the sites. On October 22, President Kennedy spoke to the nation about the crisis in a televised address. “Our goal is not the victory of might, but the vindication of right- not peace at the expense of freedom, but both peace and freedom, here in this Hemisphere, and, we hope, around the world.” -JFK

The first time i saw this movie i questioned why Alice killed herself . But watching it multiple times, you can see Alice is more than a "damsel in distress" the whole time. You can see witnessing the horrifying effects of war are really messing with her causing a lot of mental stress and ptsd. Then towards the end, Uncas is brutally murdered by Magua which happens right in front of her, and she feels hopeless at that point especially considering the alternative of going with Magua to a more agonizing death.

Thank you for this amazing review of one of my favorite movies ever. This is one of those rare movies that I prefer to the book. The relationships are a bit wonky... but I first watched this in early puberty and fell hook, line, and sinker for the super dramatic paper thin love stories. The soundtrack is the first cd I ever purchased and still looms large on my soundtrack playlist. I learned a lot from your video. My dissertation advisor, an anthropologist/folklorist that works with non-federally recognized tribes and their traditions in the present did give kudos to the subtler representations of the cultures shown in the film. This is one case in which perhaps less was more in terms of doing a more careful job representing less cultures in such a short amount of time, perhaps it merits the long form HBO treatment and careful research to do the book justice... but as it is, thank you for this wonderful review! I know I am 6 months late to the game, but The Patriot and HBO's John Adams seem like good options for dissection if you haven't done so already!

I appreciated seeing your reaction. I am currently reading O'Reilly's book, "Confronting the Presidents." I agree with you both that Covid-19 and definitely 9-11 are notably historic events. Probably George W Bush (our President during 9-11) and Trump/Biden (our Presidents during the worst of Covid) didn't make the list because O'Reilly could only pick 5 Best Presidents and maybe he thought these presidents were all a mixed bag (both bad and good). Also, O'Reilly tries to back everything he says with facts. Lincoln dealt with depression throughout his life, but he also was suicidal specifically when Mary Todd broke up with him. His friends were worried he'd kill himself. This is documented. O'Reilly didn't just make that up.

Predictable of O’Reilly and most modern “historians” the only surprise is Polk, who is an intriguing pick. TR is hard not to consider, not quite the egomaniac of FDR. Your tier model is a better method. Defining the metrics though is essential. O’Reilly (and most) fixate on who acted most tyrannical, rather than how well they restrained themselves to the limits of the office as it was envisioned. Washington is unmatchable as he defines the office for all to follow (or not). How many in human history have rejected absolute power, twice. Jefferson for providing the magnificent vision for America to strive. Jefferson Davis is an American president that should be considered in his unique role to preserve what remained of the Founder’s republic. Coolidge for best embodying the role as envisioned in a post imperial presidency, and Reagan for attempting to restrain the imperial State while also defeating a superpower without firing a shot.

I think at best Biden is in that "William Henry Harrison" class where it's very clear that even with rose-colored glasses he was old and frail, did very little, and then gave up on his re-election campaign. He fizzled out and was a public spectacle as a feeble old man. The best possible thing you could say for him is funding war in Ukraine, and I doubt history will look kindly on that, but an argument could be made. While I certainly think it's too early to put him dead last, he's got to be in the bottom 10. Sure, political furor gets people to put Nixon or Trump at the bottom, but I don't think Biden is judged the same way, and I don't think it's playing politics to put him there.

Always love "historians'" "unbiased" opinions on history. For biden, economists have studied his policies near religiously. When compared to other countries without biden's stimulus packages you see about a 2% increase. The effects would also be short term, as it wasn't a continuous program. He also brings up the afghanistan withdrawal. A withdrawal that trump setup in an agreement with the taliban. Trump kept to this agreement by lowering the trump numbers from 13,000 to 2.500 before his term ended. Trump had agreed to a total withdrawal date of May 1, 2021. Biden acctually extended this date by a few months, but with our troop levels being so low, there was really no option to stop the withdrawal. The taliban was obviously not keeping up with there part of the deal. With that fact and our low troop numbers in the country, withdrawal needed to be done quickly. That didn't go as planned, but what would have happened if we kept extending the withdrawal date until the taliban got brave enough for an all out assault against our much lower troop numbers? What was a sad day very well could have been a much worse event... I don't understand how people have such a hard time getting by their own biases. You know you have them. You know what they are. All you have to do is be skeptical of anything that agrees with your own notions. I learned to do this in my high school english class. All you have to do is try...

I agree with Bill on LBJ, he was a trash person that used the CIA to spy on the Goldwater campaign and I think the evidence is pretty strong to say LBJ was involved in taking out JFK. Worst 5 for me: 5 - Andrew Jackson 4 - Ronald Reagan 3 - George W Bush 2 - Andrew Johnson 1 - James Buchanan It’s tempting to put Biden on the list too but it’s too soon, and a lot of the economic problems we’re experiencing are problems a lot of other countries are also facing right now post-covid, so it’s hard to say how much of it is his fault. The best president, by far, was FDR. He's single-handedly responsible for the US' decade long economic supremacy and why it is still a, colloquially speaking, first world nation (for now, it's falling behind Europe and South-East Asia further and further). Ending the Lochner-era by strong-arming an activist-supreme-court is by itself the most important economic act in the 20th century. His legacy survived Reagen, Nixon, Clinton, Bush Sr. & even Bush Jr., who was the worst president economically speaking. Even Trump's crippling tax reform couldn't get rid of his social programs. He stabilized a polarized government during the fascist wave, he is the reason the US has term-limits because his opponents knew they couldn't beat someone like him. The only big thing he did wrong was the internment camps for Asian-Americans. However, seeing as there is not a single president since Theodore Roosevelt that wasn't a vicious war criminal, the relative impact on his person is too small to make a significant enough difference. While we are at it, TR would probably be next in line on the list.

They allowed millions of unverified immigrants into our country and have given them untold billions in benefits our own citizens can’t get. Along with that has came fentanyl at a rate we have never seen. The fact that they grew regulations instead of cutting them and shut down oil production causing inflation to skyrocket due to shipping costs is ruining our middle class. They say they have a tax break for us but the put federal taxes back to almost 26% and hired 80,000 more irs. They have used the government as a weapon against their political opponents. All the while not answering any questions to the American people. Sought to deport every black in the country after the war. Invaded the south which lead to over 700,000 thousand dead. His successors would go on to use the same tactics against the great plains Indians. Starving them into submission & death. Lincoln was an Imperialist that completely ignored the constitution by jailing hundreds of his critics in the North including a Supreme Court justice. Deplorable.

Biden absolutely belongs at the top of the list. As O'Rielly stated, every other president on the list inherited many of the problems they faced (and often failed to correct) while Biden was handed the most prosperous America has ever been and he turned it into a hellscape in less than two years. He has shown zero leadership on any issue. The world is on the brink of WWIII just three years after the world was the most peaceful it has been in 120 years. The policies and directives he has delivered have been disasters from the start, while usually policies by president's are only seen as a mistake in hindsight, as we learn of the consequences stemming from legislation. O'Reilly didn't even mention the personal attributes of Biden. He sexually molested his children. Hunter has followed in his father's footsteps, raping underage girls, snorting coke in the White House, and running around the planet as an illegally armed thug. He also is a racist with personal connections to the KKK, despite mainstream media objections and white-washing of the issue. And now he has essentially been ousted from the Oval Office in his final year, leaving America with nobody in the White House. America is without a Commander in Chief, and most likely America's enemies are going to take full advantage of that fact before January 2025 when a new Commander in Chief is sworn in. America is in a crisis worse than in 1860 and most don't even realize it. America is on the brink of collapse and the grand experiment coming to an end (and no, Donald Trump, potentially becoming president, is not the reason). America is a joke to other nations around the world. Nobody fears American power anymore. Nobody is adopting American culture like they did in the 20th Century. America is something to be exploited and used, but not the emulate.
