I haven’t read many of these: I own Loving by Henry Green. I know we read Jack London in school but I forget if it was White Fang or Call of the Wild. I read Heart of Darkness in school and reread it last year. Short book but a slog. Not a fan. I read and liked Maurice but haven’t read anything else by EM Forster. I might read Howard’s End this year. We read A Farewell to Arms in school. I intend to read something by Hemingway this year but it will probably be Old Man and the Sea or The Sun Also Rises I liked Ethan Frome but haven’t read anything else by Wharton. I own Main Street. We read The Catcher in the Rye in school. I own it and need to reread it. I own a couple Willa Cathers but haven’t read them yet. We read Lord of the Flies in school and I reread it in 2023. Well written but I hated the ending. My plan is to read James Baldwin next month. I have Giovanni’s Room as well as Go Tell It on the Mountain to choose from. I might read The Turn of the Screw next month but that would be my first Henry James. I reread Animal Farm last year after having read it in school. I also liked 1984 but think Huxley’s Brave New World is better. As an Ohioan I had to grab Winesburg, Ohio when I saw it used but still haven’t read it. No clue what it is. I hope to read my first Vonnegut this year. I own Cat’s Cradle and Hocus Pocus but don’t know what either is about. I also want to read Mrs Dalloway this year. I might read The Grapes of Wrath this year. I read Catch-22 a year ago. 450 pages of the same thing over and over and over again. Not a fan. I read The Great Gatsby in school and reread it last year. I liked it. I then watched the Leonardo DiCaprio movie which I felt was very true to the book while at the same time being nothing like the images in my head.

Books I've read from that list: The Magnificent Ambersons Tobacco Road The Prime of Miss Jean Brodie The Catcher in the Rye The Moviegoer On The Road (Can't convince you to read it, because I didn't love it) The Bridge of San Luis Rey Animal Farm Brave New World All The King's Men The Heart is a Lonely Hunter Nineteen Eighty-Four The Sound and The Fury As I Lay Dying (start with this Faulkner book -- I read it twice, didn't really relate to it until the second time -- after my own mother's death) The Great Gatsby I read "The Magnificent Ambersons" after hearing you talk about it. I enjoyed it! When my dad's girlfriend (she's 80) learned that I was reading it, she told me that Booth Tarkington was her father's favorite author. I read "Tobacco Road" about a decade ago. It apparently caused quite the controversy when it came out. As a "modern-day" Southerner, I too was offended by that book. My dad grew up in poverty very near where the characters in the book live. My dad's siblings still live there. Moving on to Jack London. I have not read The Call of the Wild, but after reading his short story "To Build A Fire" (loved it) I picked up his book "The Sea Wolf" (enjoyed it). "To Build A Fire" still stays with me in that haunting sort of way. Give it a go to get a taste of London's writing. I don't think you will be disappointed.

I like Joseph Conrad's "Lord Jim" a lot better than "Heart of Darkness." Even though "Heart of Darkness" is shorter, it's a slog compared to "Lord Jim," in my experience because "Lord Jim" has more storytelling verve, somehow, and the theme of messing up, feeling guilty, and then messing up worse because you feel guilty, is very relatable to me. But, yes, people consider "Heart of Darkness" to be essential postcolonial reading.

Hi, Jackson. Your channel popped up in my recommends. I've read the 3 Baldwin novels you mentioned and a couple more, but I have to tell you that he's a much better essayist than he is a novelist. Waaaay better. And he wrote one perfect piece, "The Fire Next Time." It's published together with "A Letter from a Region in My Mind." These essays are better than 95% of the nonfiction published last century. Hemmingway? I've got nothing good to say. Steinbeck? He wrote 2 good novels: EOE and TGOW. The rest is 3rd rate. Dreiser? It's the same thing with him as it is with Baldwin: the nonfiction is better. Forget reading "An American Tragedy" and go see the movie that was adapted from the book. It's called "A Place in the Sun." Montgomery Clift and Elizabeth Taylor are wonderful in it. Wharton? Wharton wanted to be Henry James but she didn't have half his talent. Read James if you like that late 19th century fiction. His sentences are much more interesting and artful than Wharton's. I have to say I was attracted to your enthusiasm for literature. You're a serious writer's dream wish; they all want readers like you.

My favorite is definitely Wuthering Heights. I absolutely adore the way the landscape is a character with the moors and Penstadle Crag (or something like that) & the juxtaposition between the Earnshaws and Lintons as evil vs good & experiencing the story through a working person was interesting. It feels like good gossip turned drama. Jane Eyre I struggled with, but might enjoy more on reread at an older age. I didn’t like the conclusion of the story. Good luck with your challenge! 🍀😊 For Brave new world, I really recommend reading after “Brave new world revisited”. Huxley wrote this essay 20 years later and I really find that it deepens the lecture (and it’s about 150 pages). I loved Anna K. but it is not like Madame Bovary. Emma and Anna come from two very different social classes and the class aspect is not really discussed with Tolstoy (but both books talk about adultery). Both great classics anyway 😊

"The Old Man and the Sea" involves much Christological and sacramental imagery. With my students, I delved into the theological subtext a lot, and it's amazing what Hemingway does with that (benefit of teaching at a Christian school, you can discuss the theological depths of literature freely). Like many modernist writers (including Fitzgerald and Cather), Hemingway wrestled with the Catholic sacramental worldview quite extensively (note also the communion and baptism imagery in "The Sun Also Rises," the protagonist's patriarchal name Jacob, the allusions to the "Song of Roland," the Biblical title of the book, etc., etc.). There is a lot of excellent secondary literature out there on Hemingway's spiritual quest and what form it takes in his novels, e.g. Matthew Nickel's book-length "Hemingway's Dark Night." Ultimately, Hemingway is an agnostic existentialist, but he explores Christianity in a gripping, thoughtful and non-didactic manner that I find extremely enriching, once you delve into that aspect of his work. I enjoy following your channel and it's great to see someone appreciate the classics. Don't read too much (let me be a bit avuncular here): for us literary types, reading too much can be a temptation (maybe not for you).

You've convinced me to give Coetzee a try (not immediately, but down the road)--he wasn't on my radar at all. John Williams is an author I definitely want to get around to: "Butcher's Crossing," "Stoner" and "Augustus" all sound amazing. My dynamic is the reverse of yours: while I've been reading everything from the Church Fathers of the 4th century to Baroque and Enlightenment novels, as well as 19th and early 20th-century American literature, I have this hunger now to connect with the contemporary scene, to delve into what's been happening in the last few years and is happening now. Read "The Netanyahus" and "Trust" to get me started, with "Colored Television," "Tom Lake" and "James" next on my list. After that, I'll probably revert to American classics, and alongside all of the contemporary lit, I'll still be reading a Baroque German novel (Simplicius Simplicissimus) set during the Thirty Years War, written by an author (Grimmelshausen) who lived through that year. And this summer, I'll be sure to read Eusebius's "Ecclesiastical History." Anyway, there are so many amazing classics out there, American and otherwise: enjoy.

I feel like it’s the same as when I went to clean out my grandmothers house and found all those old National Enquirer magazines with Elizabeth Taylor’s marriages.🤣 You can’t get better than those times as far as their entertainment. Scarlett St. Clair is really one that is super spicy, dark fantasy with her Hades and Persephone saga.

I cannot wait to hear how you feel about "Verity" after you read it. After reading Verity, I swore off Colleen Hoover as a writer, only to be talked into reading her books "The End of Us" and "It Starts With Us." They were redeemers, but I still don't seek out her books.

I read The Bee Sting. Unfortunately, I didn't love it. Since you enjoyed "The Road" let me suggest "No Country For Old Men" by Cormac McCarthy. I loved it.

I loved the movie adaptation of No Country for Old Men! I’d be down to read that.
