The whole cpap business is a money making exercise. The prices they charge for a simple nasal pillow is outrageous.

I was just given my first mask, and it is the Philips ridged pillow kind that you like. It seals well and feels fine. The problem I have with it is exhaling. Even with low pressure, I have to do a lot of work to exhale through my nose. Maybe I will get used to it?
@AdventureswithCPAPКүн бұрын
Yeah, that happens a lot when you're getting used to CPAP. I have a breathing technique that works, and I need to make a video about it once I get back to filming again (soon, I promise!). Here's my best attempt at describing it in text, though. The problem is, your body is wanting to get rid of CO2 and the constant positive air pressure is creating resistance to that. What you need to do is slow your breathing down and relax, so your body is getting rid of less CO2. What I do is, if I have to get up in the middle of the night for a wee, when I go back to bed and put on my CPAP, I'll inhale through my nose (through the nasal pillows) and exhale vigorously through my mouth (since there's nothing to block the exhalation). About a minute of this and my heart will have slowed down enough and my need to exhale CO2 will have leveled off enough that I can now exhale through the constant air pressure coming into my nose. Lemme know if that helps or if I need to describe it better!

Thank You! I have a question.....I was diagnosed with severe sleep apnea about 14 years ago. I have a resmed 10 machine. I used it on and off for about two years.I went from a full face mask to a nose mask and then a pillow....then back to full! I couldn't deal with it and put it away for about 3 years. Only took it out when sleeping over relatives houses. My wife said I snore like crazy.......now we sleep apart. She has it also but won't get it checked out! Tried again for a week.....no good! Put it away for about 7-8 years. Have been taping my mouth....I wake up many times and always with a dry mouth! Want to try again, maybe with a different mask setup. I am closing in on 70 yrs old. My question is (finally), can I still use this machine? Even though it is over 10 years old, it has low mileage/usage. I have cleaned it thoroughly, and would buy new hose (heated) and new mask. It has been in it's case in air conditioning it's whole life. When using, always kept it clean, and always used distilled water. Am told nothing to clean inside of machine, I am the only user and was never subjected to anything outside and always in a/c. Look forward to your reply!
@AdventureswithCPAPКүн бұрын
I see absolutely no reason why you can't use it! Like you said: new hose, new mask, new filters, and you should be fine!

I primarily breathe through my nose so they started me out with the gels I hated the two gel nasal mask they tore my face up to I ended up using the single nasal pillow which goes over both your nostrils but mine had a little divider in the center making it much more comfortable than the one of the singles slit in it it took a while for my nosy get used to it a couple weeks but after that and now it's super comfy! The first one just absolutely sucked for me cuz I have a beard as well obviously from my picture mine is a single silicone nasal pillow with a thin strip silicone divider in the very center it literally feels super comfortable against your nose I haven't tried the one you're trying that exact shape but mine's basically the same idea just with no bumps mine is also a ResMed airsense 10 with a Airfit N30i nasal pillow.

I've just had a sleep study done, last 12-18 months my cognitive function has declined rapidly. I thought I was suffering from CTE or early onset dimentia and I can't remember stuff all of my past, I can't explain my symptoms properly if my life depended on it. I just keep quiet now because I've noticed people avoid me & people really don't give a toss about others! That's my experience anyway, now because this sleep deprivation or apnea or whatever I have is affecting my appearance (I wake up with black, droopy, wrinkled, sore eyes every day) I have stopped working out, eating properly, I hate going out in public & I've lost about 3-4kg. I'll leave it at that.

Just found out at 29 (30) failed keeping it on and keeping a 19 day record a month. Mainly because I wake up with a dry ass mouth and work odd hours so I'd get home tired as shit and not put it on. Purely my own fault and now I gotta wait 3 months to get a new one. After the sleep study though I realized I've been walking around half awake with no energy since my early teens.

Next time, double bag the motor in a sealled food bag with the alcohol and a couple of cotton buds inside. Once sealed you can then use the cotton buds while it is flooded with alcohol without having to waste loads flushing it repeatedly.

In addition to fixing my extreme apnea problem, my reflux stopped immediately with CPAP. By the way, my sleep lab set my CPAP pressure at 22 cm, which is wicked high. I couldn't use CPAP at that pressure. I think the mask was leaking during the test and they cranked the pressure up to compensate. I found a nose mask that tapes to the nose and doesn't leak and was able to cut the pressure down by half. If you're having mask leaks, try all kinds of different brands.

My Doctor ordered the at home test equipment and I just finished sleeping with this equipment and have mailed it back and Im waiting for the results. I'm using the ResMed AirFit P10 Pillow mask. From what I see, the mask-inside-the-mask keeps it full of air to keep it in contact with your nostrils. I was given this mask to try after using a full face mask for years. At the 2nd sleep study the tech recommended the P10 as he saw the one I'd been using leaked, and the P10 is great for anyone with a beard - and it is great. The CPAP machine I'm using now, the ResMed AirSense 10 AutoSet, has an App that scores you on how well the mask seals, and more.

Thank you so much for making this video. I wish that every person diagnosed with sleep apnea could see this. You provide so much information and in such a pleasant way. CPAP therapy carries a stigma and I feel like you just make it seem normal and matter-of-fact. This is exactly what newly diagnosed individuals need when starting therapy can feel very overwhelming.

I just picked up an auto set loos just like that one. Found it in a pile of spilled stuff on the way to the dump. Only had a little over 650 hours on it. Like new. It was missing the power adapter. My brother loaned me one as nd it runs like a top. I cleaned it up and gave it a test run. Worked beautifully. Now I have a great backup unit.

I really appreciate this video. I've been using a hybrid mask for sometime, but honestly struggling with it. I've always thought I needed to wear a full face mask being a "mouth breather" however the tip of where/how to place the tongue was interesting and happened to have a nasal mask I never used. Gave it a try and was so surprised that I kept my mouth closed all night. I've now switched to the nasal cushion and is a completely different experience for the better

Yeah exactly what works for someone else might not work for you. I so badly didnt want a full face mask but my deviated septum is bad enough that its common for both nasal passages to be fully stuffed up and I have to breath through my mouth.

I really enjoyed your video, your openness, your humor, and especially the snippet with your wife (which was so endearing). I have yet to experience the 'birds are singing' feeling of the apnea cure but I've only recently discovered (after 24 years or so) that I was never on the right pressure or using the right kind of machine to manipulate certain variables besides pressure. It really is a unique journey each of us embarks on. I've had to do a significant amount of research and experimentation of my own to get this far. Thanks again for your videos.

Great insight! How often can you change CPAP equipment. Can I suggest the smaller equipment that I'd prefer to my insurer?
@AdventureswithCPAP2 ай бұрын
A lot of that depends on whether or not you're in the U.S. and who your sleep doctor is. Many insurers will pay for replacement of masks every month but hoses every six months. My wife and I have changed insurance since I was prescribed CPAP, and what each plans covers with what frequency has changed. Also, many sleep doctors in the U.S. are on the take from Philips or ResMed and will write what's called a "branded" prescription. My original prescription was for a DreamStation APAP with a DreamWear full face mask. I couldn't get anything else covered by insurance. My PCP wrote me an unbranded script so I could get what I wanted, and my new sleep doctor did the same. My gut instinct is, if your sleep doctor writes a prescription for a specific device, they're being bribed to do so and you should find another sleep doctor.
