A garbage breeder believes that excessive linebreeding to the point that it becomes inbreeding is a good thing and makes the animals better. They've never heard of hybrid vigor nor the risk of locking in bad transcription errors along with the good. That is why we have wobble syndrome, the lethal pairings, duck beak, too small or large eyes, no eyes, and other deformities. People can blame it on incubation issues all they want, but then why is it happening to the same lines belonging to other breeders as well? I have an animal science background and have bred other animals. Reptile or not, breeding just for a pretty color does a diservise to the species. If one breeds they should always look at how they can improve the breed. Sound, ideal form comes first, then temperament, and then color. I picked my first male based on beautiful head shape, he has an exquisite refined delicate head and neck that flows well into the rest of his body. He happens to be a leopard yellow belly and hopefully will refine the banana yellow belly female we have. Who is nice but could have a better head shape. The snake genetics should be about more than just color. Both in that pairing are laid back and easy to handle. They are also good feeders and curious snakes. It's the type of snake experience I would want first time owners to have.

Seems like this just makes the DGa and DGb look even more unreliable. At the very least we should definitely stop calling them “DGa and DGb”.

Not really sure how I feel about Outback honestly. I was ready to spend over $2000 on one of their dinkers last year and they never sent a reply back. I sent them emails about it after they agreed to sell her to me and never got a response. Then a week later she disappeared from their website. Not a great way to do business in my mind….

Very cool looking baby you got there, for sure worth breeding back to the sire in my mind! And as for DGa/b, so far in combinations it does not seem like we are able to pull out any consistent “look” for DGa and/or b animals. I would lean towards believing what you have is something new…but time will tell. And this is likely the first time we have seen an animal that is het for an and b and negative for c, especially not having many other mutations mixed in as well. Beautiful video, and I look forward to testing this girl, and seeing what babies she will give you from the original sire!!!

Very interesting. I bought a leopard dg het clown that is the best example I’ve ever seen of that combination. RGI test came back positive for DG a, b, and c so maybe you’re right about a and b being a form of enhancement gene.

Did Ben give you any feedback on the DGa + DGb results? It's interesting especially since none of the data from the Free DG testing project showed any het DGa+DGb animals that were not also het for DGc.

Hey Steven, great video. I disagree with your assertion that "we didn't find a new gene" beccause the sire was Positive for DGa and DGb because we don't really know what those are. They were clearly something that "rode along" with DGc and were inadvertently bred into the US DG stock, but I actually thing it's really cool to have a wild caught example and potentially an F1 of one or both of these genes. They must have had some sort of desireable phynotypical effect to be selected for (even if by accident), and I would argue that the degree of reduction of the dorsal in a GHI is a pretty significant effect as what I consider "good" GHI tends to have a very pronounced dorsal. I understand your disappointment, but you may be on to something bigger.

I know it's a little late, but considering the number of traits out there for ball pythons, how did you identify sunset as a good foundational trait? Same with the clown project, I'm curious how the community identifies these "base traits" or which traits are considered potentially projects worthy.

I breed cornsnakes and I saw the price last year get so low that it was not even worth my time making new listings. Even the Amelanistic cornsnakes where bottomed out. It was all of the first time breeders selling there first babies last year. They were selling them below production cost

This is currently happening to hognose snakes as well. First time breeders are selling triple genetic animals at "wild type" prices. It's insane. Now I know why breeders at expos get pissed off when someone undercuts them by $25.
@TesseraCraft
@TesseraCraft 8 күн бұрын
@@Justin.HeterodonHome well if wild type prices are still good enough to make some proffit it is not too bad, you just don't make alot of money when you buy the expencive animal that you wanted to breed, but my biggest problem is when people are selling them below the cost of breeding.
@Justin.HeterodonHome
@Justin.HeterodonHome 8 күн бұрын
@@TesseraCraft the only problem is that it will ultimately drive down the prices of wild types as well once people realize they aren't selling. Why get that normal looking hog when you can get the one that was $600 last year for $250 this year?

breeders are at different levels/stages and have different amounts of money or funds and experience, breeders with a budget to a old huge breeder that has milked customers selling them expensive animals that necessarily dont cost that much..small breeders can use no display enclosures and no table cloth and still be a good breeder, fancy doesnt mean great it just means you hide the bad stuff....many of the big breeders have all the suppose good qualities but do all that shitty work at their breeding facility...Ive seen huge breeders that have everything fancy but yet their animal sits in shit all day and has no water for months and use the same water dish for their whole life its hard to say, its not that simple as u make it seem...but your promoting yourself as one of the great so makes sense why u would talk like this

I think auction hawks are using auction pricing when thinking about the pricing of these snakes though. It doesn't take that much effort to watch the end pricing. And auction hawks are the most likely to buy snakes in the current economy. If its rare and time constrained it doesn't effect the price. If its extremely common and time constrained it does. *cough clown pied cough*

Discounting because of Cinnamon? I've never done or even heard of that. Cinnamon is VERY crucial in some combos. I feel like discounting at a show is far more likely since you are face to face with the breeder AND you will already be saving money since there will be no shipping cost. Completely agree with points you make, especially the "Hold Back Premium"! Excellent point on this subject! Great video as always my friend. 🙂

So quick question on this would it be a good strategy to have a few good looking pet quality snakes on hand and get into maybe one or two projects and that's it this is my first year breeding and I am still on the learning curve I produced 2 clutches this year and the first clutch I did albino het pied to albino het pied got two visual albino pieds a male and female. I'm holding them back for future stuff and the second clutch is a spin enchi calico to a black pastel and they all came out very good looking as well but I wanted to get into the hypo and Panda pied for projects what would your advice be on those two
