Okay wait. I am Dutch and can almost NEVER understand German cause of their weird grammar and words and stuff. But low german I can understand suddenly? That is very interesting. I should learn Low German instead of normal German

Even within the Low German group there are language branches of their own right. E.g. Low Saxon sounds more like Northumbrian English proper than other varieties of Low German.

I had relatives in the Wetterau and holy shite I could hardly understand a damn thing they were saying. If you live in Germany, learn to speak the damn language correctly will ye, sheesh! That goes particularly for Bayrisch!

and here i thought it was "Plattdüütsch" instead of "plautdietsch". is that more of a dutch thing? because i only the dutch call it "dietschland" if i recall correctly.
@plautcast5 ай бұрын
We speak Plautdietsch. Plautdietsch, also known as Low German or Mennonite Low German, is a dialect of East Low German. It originates from the regions of Prussia, specifically the Vistula delta region (now in modern-day Poland), where many Mennonites settled in the 16th and 17th centuries.
@JHenryEden5 ай бұрын
@@plautcast y'know, i was so close to not post that question, but i cant say i regret it one bit. i am from Schleswig-Holstein and here we speak "Plattdüütsch", "Plattdeutsch" or just "Platt". And with a little bit of strain, i do understand both a dutchman and a plautdietscher. very interesting and thank you for replying, however, how does one just learn an extinct language like you did? Most prussians went to Mecklenburg-Vorpommern wenn Pommerania fell and a great deal of Prussians lived out their days in Schleswig-Holstein and when they moved, most of the culture was erased as they tried to fit in with the locals because speech mannerisms just drop when you are around people that dont do them. again: thank you for the reply on a video that is over a decade old. commendable engagement to the cause.

My paternal grandfather's family came from Alsace-Lorraine, they spoke both French and Plattdütch, they came over with many Mennonite families although they were Catholic, they together founded a community in northern New York, there are many gravestones written in French in the Catholic cemetery, the Mennonites have their own cemetery and still use German / Plattdütch. I'm studying German now, have a family of friends in Bayern, I also hope to study my Bible auf Deutsch.

Thanks for these videos! My family was excommunicated before I was born, and I grew up hearing my grandparents and great-aunts speak and sing in low german. I have always been a little sad not to have been taught it, and there are precious few resources even documenting the language. So anyway, thank you! This is important work!
