As an amateur (very, very amateur lol) researcher of Indo-European languages (especially the Germanic and Celtic branches) I find this completely fascinating. It's awesome to know that the Low German dialects are being kept alive in this crazy age of "standardization". How boring would this world be if we all looked the same, spoke the same language in a single, standard dialect and had no knowledge of our origins and history. I think, sadly, that day is approaching though. I have just recently began to dig into the Low German dialects and can't wait to learn more. My own first language, English, would sound alot like this today if it had not been heavily influenced by Norman French about 950 years ago. We can still hear the similarities though. I can listen to a Frisian speaker and, if they speak slowly, I can understand about half of what they say. Just fascinating.

I find this the closest language to English that you'll still consider a German language. That why it is cool to learn. Much more intuitive than the more distinct High standard form of German we usually meet.

I was born and grew up right at the German North Sea coast and I have fond memories of hearing Plattdütch a lot, often through my grandmother and dad. My dad still uses a lot of Platt in daily life, so many words were always “normal German” to me until I started to move around. For example, schnacken for talking/having a chat. I have now lived in the UK for a considerable time and I can’t explain the feeling of comfort that hearing Platt gives me. It feels like a hug.

Yes, thanks to Middle Low German being used as a Lingua franca in the Hansaetic League, Middle Low German is considered the largest single source of loanwords in Swedish.

Haha me too! It's weird as I grew up in a small town of people in the U.S. who speak English and Low German. So I always used to think it was a common language. Then I find out most people don't even consider it a language.

This language is truly beautiful,i literally fell in love with it sice i discovered it existed!It is way closer to swedish,dutch and middle english(and even the french affected modern english has much in common with it)than with what is considered to be standard german i.e. one of the southern german dialects that was changed beyound recognition by the lingual process known as *the high german consonant shift*.I believe it must be preserved and acknowledged as Germany's second official language!

Please - by ALL means, create a comprehensive KZbin site with PLENTY of lessons in Plattduutsch! (The language my ancestors spoke in Hessen-Nassau. A small, inexpensive grammar would be nice, also.) Through the magic of the Internet, I have already studied the rudiments of Plattduutsch, Low German, Flemish, Afrikaans and Dutch and Frisian (both also ancestral languages.) I have become determined to become fluent in the Low German languages (since my native tongue, English, also falls into that category), and am looking forward to witnessing a rise in interest of these fascinating languages that have been, more or less, pushed aside in favor of more "popular" languages. NO language is unimportant, and I will enthusiastically help to support the spread of the Low German languages as much as I can...

Well, I thought I had a response to Andrew R. above. It is more similar to Dutch than German. In my family and many other families who originated in Holland they spoke Dutch but then moved to other areas of Europe such as Germany, Poland and Prussia and finally settled into the Ukraine until they immigrated to either Canada, United States (usually the Midwest) or S. America, etc. Some families knew German and Russian. Low German is a combination of mostly Dutch and some German. My father's family moved from Holland to Germany and on to the other parts like the Ukraine and they spoke the true German. Mom's family spoke the Low German and mom spoke fluently with someone from Holland. Dad spoke fluently with someone from Germany. :-) I just wish I had learned one or the other! :-( I knew enough to be able to survive in Austria/Germany for 2 weeks. Thank goodness for people that speak English there. Wish I had remembered more.

Basically the naming of the language is not the best. Low German (also called Low Saxon) originates from the Old Saxon language, the one of the Saxon tribe that also partly migrated to England. So basically Low German is Modern Saxon. But in the year 1180 the duke of the Duchy of Saxony, a powerful duchy within the Holy Roman Empire, was disempowered and the Duchy of Saxony was dissolved. The title Duke of Saxony in the end fell to Saxon nobles ruling over an area in which mostly Thuringians and Slavs lived, and on which by time the name Saxons was applied (the modern German state of Saxony). The original Saxons were robbed their name and so the name Low German came into play for the actual Saxon language and people.

Oh, and Low German/Low Saxon is just an own language within the continental West Germanic spectrum. All three of them, High German, Dutch and Low German/Saxon form a dialect continuum and have things in common but also their distinctive features. Low German is often more distant to (High) German than Dutch. Low German and Dutch share that they did not participate in the High German consonant shift: German: Wasser, Salz, Pfeffer, ich Dutch: Water, zout, peper, ik Low German: Water, solt, peper, ik English: Water, salt, pepper, I German and Dutch share grammatical features like forming the past past participle with the ge- suffix, that Low German lacks: German: Ich habe geschlafen und viel getrunken. Dutch: Ik heb geslapen en veel gedronken. Low German: Ik hev slapen un veyl drunken. English: I have slept and drunken a lot.

This is great! Glad to see you added more. Plautdietsch tapes are hard to find. Both my parents are gone but were from Hanover and Steinbach area. Grew up with plautdietsch all around, understood some, but spoke very little. I should have spoke it more as I still have many relatives there who speak better German than English, and I would like to visit! My great grandparents spoke Low German mixed with Russian. They were from a German farming community in Russia (Those were a thing prior to WW1). My dad learned it when he was little but he can't remember how to speak it. Ironically he can understand regular German pretty well. (can't speak that either, just more or less understands it)

my late mother spoke low German in her home ,she also claimed to be Dutch. this must have been where her ancestors emigrated from. we just had the Celtic singers , similar traits. the word flesh and understanding it's meaning from low German instead of king James English, got me to your website, very good teaching ,a few phrases ,gut notch!

I speak English, and I'm borderline fluent in German after years of on/off studying. I've been fascinated by how easy Dutch looks like it would be for me to learn after I finish mastering German. I think Plattdeutsch (Low German) would also be a breeze. With my knowledge of history, I can sort of "map out" how these languages were created and evolved over the centuries. It's extremely interesting. As I learned German, I was always amused when I'd figure out a German word's literal meaning in English, like the German word "Schildkroete": it's the word for what we call a "turtle", but it literally translates to "shield toad". I also found a lot of linguistic connections interesting, like the word "Hund" (English: "dog") to the word "hound".

A turtle in Dutch is called a "schildpad" and also translate literally to a toad with a shield. There will be many simalarities between low german and Dutch.

My paternal grandfather's family came from Alsace-Lorraine, they spoke both French and Plattdütch, they came over with many Mennonite families although they were Catholic, they together founded a community in northern New York, there are many gravestones written in French in the Catholic cemetery, the Mennonites have their own cemetery and still use German / Plattdütch. I'm studying German now, have a family of friends in Bayern, I also hope to study my Bible auf Deutsch.

It is neither fish nor fowl, neither German, nor Dutch, but Platt. Everyone says that Plattdeutsch/dietsch/düütsch is a dialect of German, but it is a very distinct language that at one point was one of the dominant languages in Europe. All across the Baltic Sea and even in ports in England and Scotland Platt was spoken as a trade language. You can go into university libraries for the German departments and find enormous amounts of writings from the 16-18th centuries; it is only because of Luther's Bible making Hochdeutsch more important than Platt that we are actually all not speaking Platt in the modern world, because surely it would have become more prominent than English if not for certain historical events. In fact, even Hochdeutsch was probably extremely close to becoming the official language of the U.S. at certain points.

Not too long ago there was a movement supporting Folkspraak as a Germanic counterpart to the Romance languages' Interlingua. Folkspraak never really caught on. One popular half serious, half joking explanation was that Platt already filled that role.

Ancient Swedish branched off into German and old Norse. French Norman came from that. Old Norse mixed with Latin became old English. Old English mixed with Norman made middle English. Add that with a little Gaelic and Latin and now we speak modern English.

Low German vs Low Franconian = Low Saxon vs Dutch and Low Rhenish. Central German is transitional to Upper German. Both are High German because they have the High German Consonant Shift. Standard German - Hochdeutsch, "High German" - evolved from East Central German (Upper Saxon) and East Upper German (Austrobavarian) chancellery languages.

I live in the South Brazilian "Pommern" (São Lourenço do Sul, RS) . And my ancestors came from Pommern (between the Oder and Vistula rivers), and they spoke the Plautdietsch. Actually the Plautdietsch is my mother language. But my family doesn't speak it anymore, just some sentences and words.

Sim o pomerano é uma variação do baixo alemão. Não é exatamente a língua do vídeo. O hurunsqueano, pelo que sei, não veio do baixo alemão. Mas era usado como um "dialeto franco" entre os falantes do baixo alemão.

Even within the Low German group there are language branches of their own right. E.g. Low Saxon sounds more like Northumbrian English proper than other varieties of Low German.

My late father was German, his father was Bavarian and his mother Baltic German.Daddy spoke German with a Berliner accent because he and his brother learned it from Grandma, because grandpa said we aren't in the old country anymore ,we,are in America so we speak English.A lot of the Germans around here spoke Platzdeuscht.There,s a sausage brand here name Opa,s and a restaurant named Oma,s in New Braunfels.My dad said the opa and oma is more dutch.He said he always called his grandparents Gross Vater and Gross Mutter.

Great Idea! Anybody who is trying to learn Plautdietsch needs to expand their vocabulary and this is an excellent and practical way to do it. Dank scheen. Themes: things around the farm would be great, or things seen while driving. Foods are always good and cooking terms. Musical terms and instruments and being a Mennonite language, church and bible terms would be appropriate. :)

Agree 10,000%!!! I had three years of college German and only catch 25% of Hoch on a good day and only if I'm familiar wïth the topic. OTOH, when I went to Hamburg I was astonished at how little difficulty I communicating with people. I generally only had to ask the meaning of specific vocabulary items. I talked with one elderly lady (Hamburgerin?) who told me that if she spoke her grandparents' dialekt with an American accent English speaking people usually had little problem understanding her. It's like the urban legend is true: Platt is 1/3 of the way to English from Hoch!

Very Goot. Apparently low German is the ancestor of English, with many words similar to English. Is this the Language that the Angles and Saxons took to Britannia 1500 years ago? My Ancestors left Prussia in the 1850s, Would this have been the German they spoke? Thnx.

I know very little about Low German except that my ancestors who immigrated to Missouri in the 1800s spoke it. I would love to learn more and learn some of this language my family spoke. Do people in Europe still speak it? Is it the same as Dutch?

Thankyou for your response. It certainly sounds "European" to an English speaking person :). I think the Prussian Empire extended thru to Poland and the Baltic states in the 1800s. I believe that was Hitler's motivation to "Reunite Germany" of course he fought for the Kaiser (Prussian) in WW1. Perhaps the Empire extended into Scandinavia? yw sorry I couldn't help more. Pann is Low German for Pfanne which means pan in english. Verzig (or veerzig) I found two words for that, vierzig in Low German which means fourty and I found old documents of WW2 were they use it for Verzicht which means something like resignation. You won't find and of the words that are used in our many different dialects on a dictionary or translator program. Only standard German.

I don't know about the Amish, but I live in a town full of German Mennonites in the US and this is the dialect we all speak.

the phrase " Jo, Ekj go wada nenn " the W sounds really close to English W sound. And from my short experience of looking up Low German / Plattdietsch, there is no one way spelling for words, www.plattmaster.de the Pronoun for I they say is " Ik " but in this video they say it is " Ekj "

Ok Australian guy, I'm giving up on looking for it any further. The only thing I could find out was that if you separate Pann and verzig it is 2 words from the Low German dialect that make absolutely no sense if you put them together lol Since this is the only hint so far I would maybe try and research in that direction. I would contact people that know something like historians specialized on the area and dialect. You can google and email those there are a bunch :)

Yeah, the Amish and Mennonites in Canada, US, Mexico and Belize still use it. I guess there are more south of Belize. They went wherever they could work the land (farming).

Thankyou for helping. I have found some interesting information. Apparently there was an "Old Prussian" Language. On the 16 July 1938 by order of Hitler, 1500 East Prussian Places Had their names changed to "German" names! In 1945 ALL Prussian names in the new Russian Territory+East Germany, were changed from Prussian to Russian. Probably explains why "Pannverzig" of 1850, no longer exists..it is now a German or Russian name. Mystery Solved...Now have to find what Pannverzig was changed too. :)

I just object to the spelling being used to represent this Platt variety. In 'daut' the sound seems to closer to an open /o/ and in 'kjeel' we clearly hear /yoy/ not any sort of /e/. Also, in "Räjenboage" we actually hear /reyenbewe/ If the spelling does not follow a simple and easily recognizable pattern following as close as possible the phonetic reality, it will make harder for those who don´t have access to the sound files to reproduce it, not to mention make it harder for the kids and anyone who is trying to learn the language, just saying. We should avoid making the same mistakes of mainstream languages spellings which make their standard elitist in so many ways, and this is one of them. As for the rest, well done, keep all Platt languages alive, please!
