I very much enjoy following your adventures in Brittany Roger. I was in a quandary as the brexit cutoff approached and eventually made the decision to return to the UK (N. Wales) as my children and grandchildren are there and I felt the separation would be difficult, especially considering the 90 day rule and pensions, healthcare etc. I traded down to a much smaller house due to the ridiculous inflated Welsh property market (I’d also sold my sailing boat). I appreciate your stance on the realities of climate change and it’s scientific evidence base. I wish more people would speak out and do what they can to ameliorate the problem/crisis. I feel a smaller manageable sailing boat may be something I’ll need in my life soon. I’ve restored a number of old houses including an cruck built stone cottage in Wales which I used lime-based mortar and render. I also spent some time restoring a stone farmhouse near Landivisiau (Finistère) belonging to a friend

I'm enjoying your house renovation videos, not least because I'm seriously looking to get a late foothold on the property ladder with pretty meagre savings from my pension. I don't think I'll get much for 8000€ 😬 allowing up to 3000 on top of that for notaire fees...🤔. So I'm following carefully how you've tackled the insulation question, having seen how wet-rot, dry rot can get into the spaces created by plaster-boarding or timber cladding..

The one thing i'd advise against is adding too many windows as many British expats do, the original sizes and positions of windows were well thought out to minimise heat loss in the winter and keep houses cooler in the summer ! That aside it does give you a nice view.

I enjoyed the video and the slow diction of Roger. I wonder what the composition is that Roger puts on the wall: what is the volume of hemp and lime? Can it be done by hand like abobe?

Hello Roger. When I look at your smiling face I hope it reflects the joy your videos have given me, my bother and my late wife. Together we built a Seil over nearly 4 years. We live in NSW. Australia and we now have joined up with other dinghy sailors under the tells of Sailing Kate Louise. Paul, the originator of this group happily admits that you were his inspiration. So I hope that smile grows ever larger in the knowledge of the gratitude so many of us owe you. Patrick

How far forward does the mast have to be to be considered a "Cat Boat."
@DAVIDMILLER-nc9vo13 күн бұрын
That's a very nice boat but it's not really a "dinghy". One criteria for a dinghy is that it can be easily car-toped by two people. "EASILY" cart-toped! But one can call this boat anything a person wishes, I . It's a pleasure looking at this video, thanks.

Superb video Roger, thank you! I imagine that dinghy cruising with company is very different from being alone - and I'm sure both are wonderful in their own way. Mary looks like great fun, I hope she's loving her Scamp. God bless & fair winds, Chris 👍

A man from Shetland told me that fishermen there noticed almost 50 years ago they were catching fish they had never experienced that far north before. Climate change is very real and has been going on for a long time. Well done Roger to you and your team for the innovative work that you are doing. Best wishes from North East Scotland.

I asked my local builder’s merchant for limewash paint but was told it would be difficult to find anyone who was technically competent to apply it. Ha Ha! The oldest paint in the world. Farrow and Ball offer it at somewhere near the same price as gold. Fortunately I found a traditional maker in North Devon. I bought two hundred litres for one hundred pounds. Put it in my car and took it to my home in France. My ninety centimetre thick stone walls of my five hundred year old house can breath!

Couldn’t agree more: living in the countryside is an isolating experience. A car for every journey. I live in the centre of a small ancient city in northern Brittany. I use my car once a week for my major shop.

Thank you Roger for your fantastic insights and overviews of the town of Douarnenez in Brittany. We vacationed there for a week when the kids were small, enjoying the wooden boat festival and camping near the beach. My wife's sister had an import/export business in Italy and was a buyer of their salted fish. I got a chance to go out on one of the locals fishing boats for the day,. We got up close to some of the square rigger training vessels on short tacks inside the bay. It was blowing 20-30 naughts, so I'll never forget that experience. We are retired now and decided to move from the U.S. to France. We bought an old 12th century Chateau in the Loire Valley, so I can relate to your DIY experiences. However, I love sailing and the ocean and still dream of the wonderful time we had in Douarnenez. Life was simpler then, I remember having a beer and meal at a local pub called Le Pourquoi Pas (the why not). Hope it's still there. We are now looking at homes again, this time concentrating in Brittany. Cheers.

As an owner of an old farmhouse in Normandy I am very grateful for the ideas on material usage. But, I would like to understand how you decided that there was enough strength in the house to support the extra weight you're putting "up top".
@RogerRoving23 күн бұрын
Not sure its much extra weight at all. Formerly there were solid boarded partitions, etc, and we are building in extra strength.

They took all the sardines and emptied the sea then the factories closed , stupid people
@RogerRoving23 күн бұрын
Slightly more complex than that. The canning factories have moved out of town and require fewer people. The fishing had evolved into pot boats by the 1960s, fishing off the coast of Mauritania, and this came to an end when that country became independent of France.

Great video Roger and in principle I agree. However we are moving to a place in the country! Hopefully in a few short months. We do have our reasons for our decision and we are sparing the YT population of our story 😂 We will be approx an hour from la rochelle and my question to you is, are there any qualifications to dinghy ownership in France? I can't find anything online but i thought if anyone knows, it would be you 😊 Love watching your videos, we know the region well. Unfortunately we wanted to be closer to friends and family which has taken us into Le Vendee. All the best
@RogerRoving23 күн бұрын
No qualifications are required unless you have a motor on your boat more powerful than on the average dinghy.
