Small boats have the best parties!

AVEL DRO
Do you want a boat like mine?
Avel Dro is an Ilur designed by François Vivier, and built of clinker plywood by Les Charpentiers Reunis of Cancale in 1994. I bought her in France in 2003 to import her into the UK, and more recently returned her to France again before the present Brexit trade restrictions were imposed.* The design is based closely on the traditional inshore fishing boats of Brittany in the early years of the twentieth century - hence her single boom-less lugsail rig and lack of a mainsheet horse, (sometimes controversial among my viewers). Although rare in Britain, Ilurs are relatively common in France. The name Avel Dro is Breton, and basically means a whirlwind.
Length 4.44 m
Sail area 12.2 m²
Beam 1.70 m
Draught 0.25 / 0.86 m
Design category C3
François Vivier's website (in English):
www.vivierboats.com/en/
Similar dinghies can often be found for sale on the website of the French magazine Le Chasse-Marée:
www.chasse-maree.com/revue/
Or try Le Bon Coin, (where you can buy anything in France):
www.leboncoin.fr
*Since January 2021, due to Brexit, Great Britain (but not Northern Ireland) residents who buy a boat in France or elsewhere in the EU, with the intention of importing it into the UK, must pay VAT and other duties on the import.

As an old sailor have I notised that you tackle for the mail sail needs to be hooked from side to side, suggestion instal a tube from side to side over the stearing so the tackle for the main sail can go automatickly from side to side. uicker and safer sailing. Thank again for your inspiring film! / Arne

Typical, you see it everywhere, the bloke standing around being 'captain' and the little woman doing all the hard physical work, 14m 30s, female sculling..... Nothing changes, in the mid 80's I lived in a house overlooking the Royal Cornwall YC, the number of boats picking up moorings with the boss bawling out orders to the 'wife' on the foredeck with the boathook..... I'd make the lot of them watch the film 'Dead Calm'....

Don't you dare feign bewilderment when your crew sets you loose in a teacup! Acting exasperated at her slowness to figure what you want is classic passive aggression. And ,if you are going to grunt and complain every time you switch your main sheet block from side to side, put in a traveller. My friend Sam tried to explain who you were to tell me he watched some of your videos. I said"Oh!Little Fuddy-Duddy Man ?" "Yes! That's him!"he replied. Now to achieve some balance; I love your boat and the places you go are gorgeous and your knowledge of them is expansive. Just remember that an angry woman might might find a novel use for a fid,say marlinspike shemanship.
