I may get the opportunity to visit Schloss Weikersheim again this coming August; I first saw the interior in 2014, and was unhappy that photography wasn't allowed. This was the same in Wuerzburg Residenz that year, but on a visit to the Residenz last year (2023), photography was now permitted.

My great-grandfather was in the 398th company B, Raymond Turner, he never talked to anyone about the war but being a history buff I stumbled across his paperwork and pictures, and just happened to find this video. I’ve struggled to find much info on them, please let me know if there’s any other resources! All I’ve found is a book published online “History of the 398th engineer regiment”

That book really tells A LOT! It's sort of like their yearbook. Co B was 1st BN.

Personal note: Born just 15 years after the war, I grew up in Luxembourg. (Actually had family very near those places) So I am very aware and thankful to all the people like your grandfather. They kept me from growing up in a brown shirt doing nazi salutes. Literally. Also, When I was young, every single adult was a witness (...and oh, all the stories...). But now almost all of those have died, with endless stories and historical information. So videos like this help preserve history; thanks.

When I attended my first 501PIR/101st Airborne reunion, which was held in Atlanta Georgia that year, the troopers sang Blood on the Risers during the dinner/banquet part of it and it was so incredibly moving. All of the men are gone now and blue skies to each and every one.

My father was there with the 501PIR/101st Airborne. I see their patch here with Geronimo grabbing a lightening bolt. I truly hope that one day I can visit and learn more about his plight. I've had the blessing of meeting a lot of his fellow troopers and they helped me, tremendously, to learn about Normandy, Holland and Bastogne but I would assume that physically walking around these places packs a ton of emotion.

1,300 casualties... How many jumped in? (Did my research paper in company commander school on this.) Most units, statistically, had about 125% casualties in the three months between D-Day and the break-out. Most Infantry casualties happen in the first 30 days of being in combat. After that, if you survive and learn how to do it, you have a 50/50 chance of surviving a year. And I do mean "survive", not "remain unharmed", because 90% of all infantrymen are hit with a year. Which is why the U.S. Army rotation in Vietnam was 12 months - you had used up all your luck.

If I remember my readings, there was an expected 60% casualty rate for the D-Day jump, but it ended up being more like 35%. My guess is after they landed, their chance of survival was the same as most infantrymen.

The sacrifice of so many on all beaches. Throughout all battles. Saddening and humbling. Yet our 'leaders' in power do not uphold the freedom for which they fought. Instead these 'leaders' only seek self wealth to the detriment of the sons, daughters of these brave souls.
