The road speed and design immediately reminded me of the VW bus's we drove back in the early '60's. Those had a 36 HP motor and the front, like this one, was YOU as the "airbag". That bus was SO slow, you could put that famous bumper stick on it that read, "0 to 60 in 15 minutes". Our VW bus used to pull a canvas camping trailer and it was SLOW, but it ran. Since then, of course, everything today is B-I-G! I hate it. We need smaller and slower car and other vehicles. Never happen.

That quick-drain on the oil pan is AMAZING! Wish I had this on my Acty. But just to reiterate: "off the interstate" is a personal PREFERENCE due to one's own sense of insecurity driving at higher speeds. The vehicle is not at fault here, it'll do 70mph.
@SamandKadenGoPlaces11 күн бұрын
It will do 70 but does feel a little unstable at those speeds. I have had mine get the speed wobbles in the front suspension going down hill. Possibly a front end issue or just how the shackles are designed. I also think if you had the 5 speed it would be much more equipped for this.

I would think going up the Pali Highway you'd get a bunch of impatient drivers lining up behind you - I'm sure I'd want to pass you in such a situation. So an owner would have to be immune to the bad feelings of other drivers who were annoyed at how slow you are.

It's tough to say from just a video but it looks like the climb rate is pretty slow, and there are tall trees. It must have been a little sketchy to know as a pilot that clearing the trees was questionable. But you did it. Always check your load, your density altitude, wind, the temp and engine performance before making the fateful takeoff roll!

4:10 - Pretty sure that 657 cc normally aspirated engine isn't producing anywhere close to 70 HP. That'd be on the high side for a modern engine with DOHC, electronic ignition and fuel injection. Kei trucks and vans usually produce around 40 HP.

Good job staying with it. The Ercoupe, like all low powered aircraft, appreciates total energy management. Not much can be done for fuel energy help as the Stromberg carburetor doesn't lean as well for the extra rpm. We can, however, find extra natural energy. Get the nose wheel just off as soon as possible as in the soft field takeoff, get the mains off as soon as possible as in the soft field takeoff, push/pull the yoke dynamically and proactively to level the fuselage in low ground effect (we want all wheels off for friction reduction and a level pitch attitude) for maximum acceleration possible, and pitch up to just over the trees. I assume it was a down drainage egress, critical especially at high DA. I flew the Ercoupe and all the other small Continental engine airplanes in the mountains. It is an underrated but fine airplane.

Thanks! It's been some years since this happened. But I am still grateful for all I learned in the coupe. I still have it but don't get to fly it nearly as often as I would like.
