'Nuther Good one, Steptoe. (^_^) Can't find fault with the what/why/how you do things if in the end the "Super Bike" actually RUNS like a SUPER Bike. ( ‾́ ◡ ‾́ ) I followed all the way from Part 1 because due to a series of unfortunate events, my own Super bike needed needed the very same carb services shown in this series. (҂◡_◡) The only mis-step I made was buying the cheepee carb kit(s) from E-bay. Upon install, it ran like KaRP and any/all sync adjustments were useless. After a short wild goose chase thru the ignition system which yielded no obvious faults, I grabbed and installed my "Test Bank" of known good carbs. Perfect and smooth running like at the end of this vid. (´・Ω・`) Replaced the E-bay jets with genuine Mikuni and re-installed- Road test was MUCH better but still popping and back firing even after adjusting fuel screws. (>_<) Then did my own version of your actual fuel level in the bowls "eyes-on" check. WAAY off (and over-flowing on one carb...) even though each of the needles seats were new and float height from gasket surface was spot on the "correct height". (つ﹏<。) Not a single float now at the 25.4 stock height setting. All at 26.5 or higher now to drop to the correct fuel level. (° -°) Aside from that, did all show here in this vid except for the colortune and now I've got my super bike running like a super bike instead of a Model T ford. ヽ(•‿•)ノ Well, not the part where you run it and the drivetrain at road speeds on your own custom roller fixture. That's Total BOSS Level stuff I'm not set up for. ( ´∀`)b Thanks! (人´∀`)

I replaced the OEM mechanical tensioner with an XVZ/V-Max auto unit. Never worry again about leaks or chain tension. Plus even torqued correctly the stock unit can sometimes slacken again. I’d throw those units as far as I can.

If the working face of the top of the dog is rounded where do you decide to stop cutting? When you start to see hints of fresh metal all the way to the top of the dog? Or when you reach the bottom of the rounded portion?

Nice, XJ900 is very similar. Seen them get stuffed up too. From what I have seen in my time, most wannabe motorbike mechanics should only get spanners half that long! 😂 Keeps making me money installing helicoils and doing welding/machining jobs.

Too right! I've done ye olde roadside and campsite clutch repairs and adjustments so many times. The washer fix had a habit of limiting clutch movement so I re-stretch the clutch springs to give them back some pressure until I can get new springs. It's been a while now since I've had to do this but the inner clutch friction plates "grab" and wear before the outer ones. The steel plates don't wear that much so you can shuffle the friction plates from inner to outer and it will put the better ones in the friction zone. You will have to replace the clutch stack but it can give you a little time before you have to dive in and spend money on parts.

Thx, StepToe! (ʘ‿ʘ) I just did the pre-season services, checks, and adjustments for my 79 Special. Plus a few more items that were due cause of time/mileage. Even more just because the odometer finally clicked over 16K miles-New tires and re-greasing a lot of bearings/shafts/splines/gears. (O_O) But I forgot to adjust the clutch AT the clutch..... D'oH!!! Wowzers, Steptoe! (O_O) Fuel levels that high even after you detailed all the brass floats so they'd be as close to their original weight/buoyancy?! That was unexpected. (O_o) Alrighty then...I've put my own cleaned/re-kitted/bench sync'ed carburetors back on the bike and done an initial start/run test. (^_^) BUT if I can't get them to Sync with my gauges and/or the new plugs show anything wonky??? (⊙_◎) I'll pull'em back off and copy what you did in this vid. Y'know...just to be SURE. (⊙﹏⊙)

Excellent Timing for this series, StepToe. (^_^) Due to an ethanol issue my petcocks failed over the last lay-up period. My carburetors were filled with black Goo. ( ゚Д゚) I used your two prior vids as a guide for the tear-down/clean. Making my own screwdriver(s) Fit as well as finally buying a set of those wonderful Vessel JIS screwdrivers you used. (O_O) Mine are back on the bike after a bench needle/seat leak test, bench sync, and the test start/run was a success. (ʘ‿ʘ) Good Content and Thx! (◠﹏◠)

Saved my bacon Geoff. My mechanic told me today he couldn't fit the 850 diff because the diff splines were too far away from the drive shaft. I tried explaining in idiotese then showed him this vid while tossing the spacer up every couple of seconds. He twigged so all is well now. See you in Bendigo.

You’ve seen the difference in the diffs, and the depth of the drive spline, I don’t think you’ll have much drive without it,

Hey there only just come across your site as a result of Andy's Motorcycle Obsessions. You could also use a single HEX socket rather than a conventional socket as this better connects with the salvaged bolt head. Good work though

Great video. I just have a question about the end of the video. My lever is sloppy after putting all together. And the cable has no tension still. What could cause this? Thank you?
@Steptoexs112 жыл бұрын
If all the parts are replaced as they should be with nothing missing, and the actuator onto the clutch is in the correct position with the small spring attached, ( it only goes in 1 position) it maybe you haven’t adjusted the actuator centre bolt and lock nut properly, They are a simple system but have to be exactly right
@thetradinggoat51012 жыл бұрын
@@Steptoexs11 thx so much for the reply. It was that I never had the center nut adjusted properly!! I have 2 other things to mention if you don’t mind, - after putting it all back together I noticed that the washer that sits behind the lock washer was missing. And it was missing when I took it off! Would that have any effect on the clutch system?? Secondly I’ve put in new plates and springs and cleaned everything as shown, also replaced with new synthetic 20w50 oil but I found at first the clutch dragged a bit when changing into first, and clunked. I adjusted the cable at the lever and got it so it doesn’t drag but still clunks when in first. Not sure if there’s another way too fine tune the cable or?? Thx for the insight love the vids!
@Steptoexs112 жыл бұрын
Excellent stuff 👍 It would be ideal to have the washer, they put them in there for a reason, you may find you have the clutch basket floating on the shaft a little, it’s most important to have the locking washer bent against the nut The gear clunk when shifting into first is across most bikes,
@dc62332 жыл бұрын
It truly does make a difference. But, to be honest, the only way to do this and be 100% sure that every Dog and Dog house are in the exact location is to use a rotary table on a mill and you can set your mill head to 1.5 or 2 degrees, whatever you like. This video absolutely shows the best way for someone to do this themselves with a drill press, and people with a good eye can often do this pretty darn accurately. Bear in mind most shops charge 300/400/500$ to back cut/under cut gears and that's with just the gears handed to them, let alone pulling the motor, top end and splitting the cases...

It’s not actually a jet, just a very fine venturie, it’d be no bigger than .4 mm, if that, it’s a very fine hole

How about the enrichener port in the basement of the bowl... What size drill bit is the jet down there ...???
@geoffmcfee21913 жыл бұрын
Hi Jerry, the most popular fix is run an appropriate size die down the remainder of the post , then a coupling nut, and drill the hole at the same height to match, I’ve not done it myself but have seen others do it successfully

Great instruction! The routing and reconnecting of the hoses is very challenging. There's like a million of them!
@Steptoexs113 жыл бұрын
g’day Jim, you’ve obviously got the “octopus “, the easiest way to plumb these lines is to -- 1-with the hoses off the fuel tank, turn the taps to “on”, the pipe that runs fuel needs to go to the 2 centre spigots of the 4 on the square diaphragm, to stop fuel flow when the bike is sitting 2 - the other 2 pipes (on reserve and prime) go to the outer 2 on the square diaphragm bypassing the diaphragm 3- the fuel line to supply the carbs is “t’d” into the outer 2 lines hopefully this helps you
