THANK YOU FOR THE EXCELLENT VIDEO….VERY, VERY GOOD…BUT…PLEASE…TURN DOWN THE LOUD BACKGROUND MUSIC OR SWITCH TO SOMETHING MORE SERENE. IT RUINS WHAT YOU ARE TRYING TO ACCOMPLISH ( I Use caps to make a point ). It’s like teaching your students with a broken air conditioner running in the classroom!!😢😢

Hey Mark thanks for the feedback. As you might see in my newer Dorico videos I no longer use the background music because the overwhelming majority of people decided they didn’t want that in the video. I was just trying to keep it from being too dry.

I think the player of the Sax can hear this best, and if your microphone was closer to the Sax, it would improve the test. So we could hear it too. (Its like when you play the Sax in a corner) I think the resonance in the Klangbogen will change the sound slightly when your playing, and the people with in a meter will hear this too. Too long away, this "effect" sound will fade away. But it has made me curious and I'm considering whether I should try one. So thanks for the video.

Thank you for the review. I ordered the mouthpiece last week, and compared to my Jody Jazz HR mouthpiece, it’s noticeably easier to play. I don’t have to work as hard on it. It also sounds a bit more crisp, and the tone is homogeneous from bottom to top. The only issue I’m having is that I’m not sure about the reed strength at all. I tried a 3.5 reed, but it still felt too soft to get properly full and accented low notes.
@larsenjazzmusic
@larsenjazzmusic 14 күн бұрын
Which brand of reed are you playing? General rule of thumb is Vandoren is harder than D’addario and most other reeds. For example I would think a V16 would give you much more resistance than a jazz select. I changed reeds after a few months of using these mouthpieces.

@ hi. I tried D‘Addario 3M, a Legere Signature und a Hemke 4.0. but you may be right: perhaps I should try a V16 oder a classic Blue. Good Idea

Very informative, thanks! Have you compared Note Performer to some of the better VST libraries such as from BBC Symphonicity Orchestra or for brass and woodwinds, those from Fracture Sounds which feature a superlative new legato for Kontakt?
@larsenjazzmusic
@larsenjazzmusic 15 күн бұрын
I have done a little bit of comparing. And where I would admit the more expensive versions can create a far more realistic, final project, for having to do literally no extra set up or tweaking of settings. The performer works so well. Again, I think of it more as a tool for composers, hearing their music better rather than simply The most life like sound on the market. If I was trying to use the midi for actual music production I would certainly think about buying a higher version.
@larsenjazzmusic
@larsenjazzmusic 15 күн бұрын
But one of the things I have not tried out in note performer is you can actually load certain high-end virtual instruments into its playback engine meaning it will help you integrate those playback sounds with Dara. If I owned some of them, this would be a huge advantage I would think.
@rawl747
@rawl747 15 күн бұрын
I understand that a Noteperformer playback engine is required for having it drive a 3rd party VST 3 library and that costs extra. BBC SO Pro for example is supported but many others are not. On another note, would you consider making your example Bond theme XML available?
@larsenjazzmusic
@larsenjazzmusic 14 күн бұрын
I can put some thought into that. I’m in the process of publishing this arrangement so I don’t want to get too many versions floating out there.

I was switching from Finale to Dorico recently, now I 'm building a new Chord library. Your video is very helpful! Unfortunately, I still haven't found a workflow for the following problem: I would like to move all chord symbols, alterations, sus, add., etc. BELOW the uppercase flat or sharp symbol of the root, in order to save space. Do You have any idea? Thanks a lot! Best regards, Claudio
@larsenjazzmusic
@larsenjazzmusic 12 күн бұрын
It sounds like you’re wanting the SUS or MA of the cord to be aligned with the bottom of the capital letter of the chord symbol. Is that correct? If so. This is found under the engrave menu under cord symbols. It takes a little bit digging, but there is alignment options.
@WorldPianoBar
@WorldPianoBar 12 күн бұрын
Well, I would like to have the accidentals as superscript and below that the scale degree or chord quality as subscript (Like in the Irealb app). That does not seem possible at the moment but it would be really great to shorten the width of the whole symbol…
@larsenjazzmusic
@larsenjazzmusic 12 күн бұрын
Now I’m starting to understand. Technically there is a way to do what you’re asking, but it’s somewhat complicated. You would have to go in and change the default appearance of one of the cord symbol types in Dorico to make it match up with the cord symbols like iReal Pro. If you watch the portion of the video where I showed how to make the capital MA into a little MA, you would do that, but you’d have to do it for literally all the chord types you want to change. Sorry it’s not more automatic, but that would be kind of the only way to do it that I know of.

Very helpful video, thanks for posting! As a long time Finale user just starting to use Dorico, I am already frustrated by some of the things Finale did so easily and intuitively. Any suggestions on how to delete a blank page at the end of a lead sheet that occurred when I moved the one system on the last (second) page to make it a one-page lead sheet? I've removed Overrides, tried to adjust master pages, deleted all of the header type and page text boxes to make the last page completely blank, searched the manual, read the forums, watched videos, searched internet, etc., but it still appears. Finale automatically deleted the page of course, when nothing was visible on the page. Like many Dorico users, not sure why they have Page insert buttons, but no easy page delete button.
@larsenjazzmusic

I have not seen this particular problem personally, however, you may need to check your sign posts to ensure there is not a hidden “frame break.” Frame breaks basically move the music to the next page or the next line on a multi system score.
@humorguy1
@humorguy1 19 күн бұрын
@@larsenjazzmusic Thanks for the reply. I did adjust some frames initially to force the one system on the second page to the first page, so that could have been the problem. And I was not familiar with sign posts for frames, so I have now studied how to turn sign posts on/off, and will try that next time. Before seeing your reply, I finally reset the layout back to the original two pages, and then adjusted vertical spacing (per this video you posted) to move the last system to the first page. Voila, that made the extra blank page disappear automatically! Both your video and reply gave me two great tips to use going forward, greatly appreciated!

@larsenjazzmusic I'm late to the party, but thanks for this review. I already use a good subwoofer in my main setup, but was considering the Kali sub for a secondary system. I also have the Kali IN-8v2, but they've now been moved from the studio to my casual listening bedroom setup. Great monitors/speakers in either scenario, and really tough to beat considering the price. Most people don't realize how much a good subwoofer adds to the listening experience when it is properly integrated with the main speakers. But most people have them cranked up way too high. Using the footswitch is a good way to find a good/lifelike balance and know when you've got just enough, or too much. Upright acoustic bass and electric bass guitar as well as kickdrums and toms really come to life (and even the impact of the snare), and injects some of that real world tactile impact experience that is otherwise missing. I'm a drummer/percussionist in addition to playing saxophone and have a home studio as well. For your desktop setup, I think that the smaller IN-5v2 + the Kali subwoofer might have been a more practical setup. I've auditioned the IN-5v2 as well, and surprisingly, they honestly don't give up much at all in regards to low-end extension & precision, and maximum SPL compared to the IN-8. The IN-5v2 are obviously smaller overall and less expensive, so more of that money could go towards the subwoofer. I also wanted to ask what microphones you've preferred for your saxophone recordings??? I'm a fan of some of the better ribbon microphones...Mesanovic Model 2, Samar VL-37a, various RCA/AEA, Coles, etc. I use these for drum O/H and room mics as well. Happy New Year!

Thanks for the comments. For the sax mic, the one I have used the most is the Beyerdynamic m160. Very warm and great rejection. I have also used the sE VR1 a lot. Both are very budget friendly. I would not get the sE VR2. It is an active ribbon and it is just not as flattering.

@@larsenjazzmusic Thank you for the prompt reply and information. 👍 Yes, the Beyerdynamic M160 are fantastic mics. I've used a friend's pair for drum O/H's in the past with excellent results but don't own them. That may have to change in the future... they seem to be fairly versatile. And I've heard good things about several of the sE mics as well, but haven't personally tried any of them yet, so thanks for that. So many great mics these days, and not enough money to buy & try them all, LOL. :/ Cheers

A little tip: at 9:00, to shrink down the last orphan system to fit into the previous page, a good/recommended way is also to reduce slightly the "Default space for crotchet/quarter note: "value in Layout Options/Note Spacing, without the need of decreasing the Rastral Size ;-) Keep the good work: you produce very nice and useful videos!

@@larsenjazzmusic I see. You can select the 8 bars (with the system track) and then use the filter, but with a right click, so the contextual menu appears near your mouse pointer, and shows only the commands available with that selection, and choose filter/chord symbols. You can also assign a shortcut to this: notice that you can create shortcuts with combined letter: try to assign to "filter chord symbols" the shortcut: command+f+c (just press "command+f" together, and then "c", into the "press shortcut" field in the key commands for "filter chord symbols" ;-)
@larsenjazzmusic
@larsenjazzmusic Ай бұрын
Yes, this is typically how I select a short number of measures when I wanna just grab the chord symbols. However, something as basic is copying just chords, it would be nice if I didn’t have to make a custom shortcut or use extra tools for highlighting. maybe I’m alone in this, but I copy chord symbols in almost every single composition so just stinks that I have to take all these extra steps. It does make me miss how finale would allow you to set a filter on what gets copied and pasted to allow you to leave out certain elements. But on the plus side, it is nice for regular copy and paste. You don’t have to worry about things like chord symbols getting moved around.

This was quite helpful. I was incredibly disappointed with Dorico after inputting some of my first pieces (and spending a good amount of money on it) only to click on the preview and have the page look like a dog's dinner. You would think The default output would be a little better than THAT for what it costs. Annoying that you have to go into the back end and adjust so many things just for it to do something so simple as choose the right staff size so that everything isn't colliding and pushing things off the page. Hopefully they can introduce some updates in a later release that can intelligently lay things out automatically.

I’ve only been using Dorico for a short time, but it seems like they’re relatively responsive to things like this. Sometimes we feel like our problems are probably the most important but let’s face it. It’s pretty complicated software. I agree, though some days I wonder what the default settings are the best for. I sure haven’t found a piece of music where I want the type set that small or things that tight together.
