if its raining, it's 31F or warmer, by definition. That's not all that cold IF you get out of the wind and stay dry. you can carry-wear 5 lbs of gear that can handle sleeping at 33F, wind and rain, and not need a rain suit, heavy clothing, sleeping bag, poncho, tarp, groundsheet, sleeping pad. It includes a 1 lb net hammock, 1.5 lb, XL size reflective tyvek bivy, the 'trifecta" from 2GoSystems, $95. There's 3 of the heavy duty 55 gallon drum liners, 3 ozs each, a 3 oz, 3x5 hunk of clear PEVA shower curtain (Wallys) 4 stakes, some cordage, and tape, less than 1/2 lb, A couple of Amazon 1/4 lb each bugnet "suits", and a couple of their 1/2 lb each, "cut leaf" style of camo netting. I can set all of this up in 5 minutes, or put it away and be moving in 10 minutes, no problem. None of this gear is effected by its getting wet. It's all useful in hot weather and it's all wearable as clothing, with the exception of the stakes! :-) 2 of the drum liners are taped together, end to mouth, the end cut off. and used to "envelope" the bivy. Pull the bivy and one ridgeline thru the hammock . If it's cold, set the hammock 6" off of the ground, with you in it. Kick debris under the hammock, so as to stop air from flowing under you. Pull another ridgeline thru the envelope, outside of the bivy. This will create TWO layers of "trapped air" around you. The bivy cannot be allowed to touch you or the envelope. there can be no air-leaks, so seal any that you find with the Gorilla tape. Use a light to look for such leaks.

i've never found that having just ONE fire helped (enough) The back side of you freezes unless you've got a reflective shelter curved around you, with a Siberian fire lay out in front of you. The Siberian projects all of its heat in one direction, twice as far as is the case with a normal fire. That's importante when you are using synthetic clothing and gear. The Siberian burns on the ends of the protruding logs, up in the air, so there's not much in the way of popping embers and I use a net hammock, for a variety of reasons. When It's cold, I hang the hammock just 6" off of the ground, and kick debris under it, stop air from flowing under me.

34F wind and rain is much more common in most of the US than real cold and snow. and MUCH harder to deal with. Getting wet when it's windy and sub 40F can leave you shivering in just a very few minutes. I mean shivering so hard that you can't even manipulate a zipper, or open your multitool "just" falling thru the ice with one leg can do that, very quickly, if you dont have the right gear and know what to do, in the proper order.
