I believe those boats have adjustable daggerboards or centerboards, so they should have raised it almost clear when they started surfing and then luff the sails. Treat the boat like a big surfboard instead of actually trying to sail it in. The reason it capsized the first time was because the wave pushed it sideways faster then the centerboard could pass through the water. The only way they could continue sailing in was to keep the waves directly astern and hope you didn't get swamped when the wave broke

@Black this is a bad situation to be in no matter what you do. My method would give them a chance to not capsize. The only way for a small vessel to cross waves like these is to either move at the same speed or faster. The only way for a sailboat to do so if the wind is not cooperating is to abandon powered control and rely only on the waves for propulsion while doing your best to maintain steering control.

How would you luff the sails on a broad reach? Turning that little thing down wind you lose steering, turning it up wind you power up and heel

@deankruse2891 there is no good wind indicator, but it looks like it is coming from over the cameraman's left shoulder (based on how the other boats are sailing). This should put them at a reach and allow them to luff

Just a broken mast, boat not ‘destroyed’. Rescue rub should have towed the 470 in ahead of the breakers. Nasty swell entering the harbour!

That boat is done for The mast is broken, sails shredded, the foot of the mast is probably fucked completely and it's asymmetrical now. I mean it all can be fixed but will never be in perfect racing condition again.

Awesome job! I find situations like this too advanced for me. Couldn't handle the 13 Knot wind yesterday because of how inconsistent the wind was and it was constantly changing direction.
