Such an amazing and insightful game from both sides. Although you were already playing pro at a young age, when you spent that time with him as a late teen, what were those 30 games like? I imagine it was a lot of learning, which would be priceless in building your form?

I met David Gibson at a tournament in FL 20 years ago this month. One of the kindest souls ever. I had the honor of driving him and Joel Sherman to the airport, top 5 Scrabble memories ever for me. I brought up David’s interesting opening placement of LIVID at 8D versus 8H for a 2 point sacrifice to prevent the LIVIDITY extension. Joel agreed with the position. Few would make that decision, and that’s why he’s a defensive legend. RIP, Professor Gibson, it was a pleasure knowing you. ❤

Do you ever give consideration to the idea of playing a word like ABOLITIONS as fast as possible just for the psychological intimidation factor? Surely this gives even veteran opponents a bit of pause.

I would have played SIM. A sim has SIM similar to other top simming options, slightly ahead of the simulacrum you simpered towards, so I think if Josh and a sim simultaneously agree on SIM then SIM should be simply put the optimal play regardless of what other simpleminded simpletons assume. Simmer down haters, I'll simplify it for you. On the turn where Mack played MIBS, the best play was SIM.

I was so pleased I saw ERSATZ and couldn't see it hitting the triple. Never knew KANZUS was a word, and in Collins apparently ZUPANS is also good. So I was wrong in both dictionaries! Words are hard.

Can players check the dictionary When they use the "challenge" preference? Also, in a real-life game, opponents can check the spelling of a player's word and if the word is spelt incorrectly, they don't get to place the correct spelling. What are the rules around the dictionary?

Can you make a custom board tile that is either impossible to play on, or else is worth -2x wordscore (so the bot will never play on one of them)? Then you could arrange them around the borders of a square board in order to create differently shaped boards.

@Mack Meller Is it possible for you to do a series of games against Speedy Player in Quackle? I find it to be very aggressive, and almost always taking the top play, regardless of the consequences. It's comparable to a computer version of Jackson S. Even if you only play say 20 games against it, it would still be appreciated. Maybe a Clabbers game at least 1 in 5 games. Would be so good to watch. Quackle can be harder than Bestbot at times in my opinion.

I checked the simulation. From BestBot's perspective your best equity play will sometimes be 6A GURU, giving back DERANGES, or I9 QUEUE giving back ANSWERED. Obviously you'd never make those plays, but the bot sadly doesn't know that.

I joke about AI learning psychology a lot because I'm afraid of it. "Assuming Mack is not stupid" shouldn't be a function in BestBot's programming lol. I think it only sees RESENDS as doomed and ES gives possible "help mates", just in case the opponent wants to be funny.

I think BestBot only considers top equity plays (best combination of score and leave) in the simulations. Someone correct me if i'm wrong. I've seen situations where that caused it to fish on a closed board because it expects the opponent to open a huge spot for it, but this doesn't seem to be such a case (that or Mack didn't consider it. Maybe there's a possibility that the top equity move is something hooking GLAIRY opening a triple triple?).

I'm always surprised when VROUW comes up, the Dutch word fot woman. So weird to hear it in an English context, especially with how the pronunciation is butchered. I wonder how that made it intuitive the dictionary

Both scrabble dictionaries have innumerable imports from imperialism, as well as from authors playing at something like authenticity by including foreign or dialectical words appropriate to a setting. This phenomenon is even more pronounced in Collins. Your typical native speaker would probably say most foreign words simply aren't English, but it's up to personal taste where you draw the line.

@@whitesoxMLB Your sarcasm is misplaced, as the British did, in fact, (repeatedly) colonize the Dutch. The Cape Colony of present day South Africa, for example, was under Dutch rule for 150 years before being ceded to the British in the early 1800s. This legacy is the source of many Dutch and Afrikaans loanwords into English. Vrouw is also a popular word in period pieces for referring to Dutch women, or women of Dutch extraction. This is similar to how Maria in the English version of The Sound of Music is "Fraulein" Maria and not "Miss" Maria.

bestbot's playing off its duplicates for the best possible rack leave while trying to leave open the best possibility of floaters it can triple triple off of in column a. there are quite a few 8s in the remaining pool that can play in that column through the right floater, not that i think the likelihood you float something there is high. doesn't seem that crazy a play
