Hi there! Wow! As a Stray Cats "nerd" it was really cool to hear this. A small thing here: according to my files, the show at Dr Rockits in 1988 was postponed to 2nd November. I have the router from Pollstar with that date. It does also makes sense since the day prior to the original date at Dr. Rockits, the Cats were to play in Detroit but Brian was suffering from laryngitis so they rescheduled the show to 7th November. Again, fantastic to hear all this!!

My dad said this was one of the best concerts he had ever seen. He recalls not being a huge fan of Reggae that much, and not knowing Black Uhuru, but being totally blown away by them. He described the crowd being absolutely crazy, and the whole night just electric. He says that night should have been caught on tape.

Just...sweet-ish sortof? In that weird 'ol way of seeing 'fans' in their early years. Not so much in terms of the band - the Spoons - themselves. They of course took themselves totally seriously from day 1 - as I suppose most bands do. And didn't really think of themselves as a 'novelty' band, or a 'heartthrob' band, or whatever. Even if that was what all the labels were moving their 'product' toward? But apart from all that - I - at that time - wasn't a teenybopper, I was a 'full-grown adult' of about twenty-something. And I liked Nova-Heart. As well as many other Spoons songs. And perhaps it was later?...but Arias and Symphonies was stellar. Just recently hearing them, from the modest location of my deck - some 2 blocks from the Western Fair where they recently played - I can say that they can still do the old songs. Not sure if they have anything new to offer - but, their originals Are their Originals - and they are good ones. I find it amazing and compelling both that they are still willing and able to just get up on stage, and sing, play, perform....kudos.

A bunch of us from Chatham were there. The OPP made everyone choose to either throw away their booze or consume it before entering so a lot of people consumed a lot of alcohol before entering. I had a picnic jug full of juice with a large sealed baggy containing the vodka in the juice so it passed the police sniff test - LOL. People were passed out all over under the clear blue sky. We would wake friends up when their favourites hit the stage. Great day and evening.

They played there in the summer of 1995 but I was not at the gig. I wasn't keen on Radiohead's debut album and had not yet heard their brand new album, The Bends, so I did not go. I heard and fell in love with The Bends in early 1996 and kicked myself for not having gone to the CTO gig. I did see them at Centennial Hall in 1997, though.

wow! What a great podcast. I found you through a Stiv Bators interview and next thing I came across is OMD. And 1982 was a very important and successful year for them, at the peak of their success in Europe but still underground at the other side of Atlantic but with a dedicated cult following. I also remember vividly URGH a music war, it was played in the cinemas in Greece where I'm from. OMD's first four albums are incredible. What a brilliant memory to have! No matter the freezing cold I wish I could travel back in time and be on the cue waiting in frozen Canada to see them (after I waved them earlier at a restaurant)!!! OMD live up until 1983 were pure magic. So passionate with an incredible set.

Thanks for listening and I'm glad you enjoyed it so much. First off, I LOVE URGH! A Music War. I first had the album but later dubbed a copy of the film in the mid-80s. That VHS cassette got played so much that it eventually wore out. Happy to have a DVD version now. And yes, 1982 was a big year for OMD. Canada is a bit different from the States, and a lot of those British and New Wave bands were much more popular up here than down there. A&M became their first hit album here and it was just starting its chart ascent at the time of the show. I still love those early albums but the debut remains my favourite.

Every time the Jam comes up on a playlist, it brings me back to this show, my 17 yr old self. My buddy Shep and I were blessed to grow up in TO and have so many shows available to us. Your recollection of this period is awesome. Were you at the Gang of 4, Buzzcocks, Viletones show? You mention my fav Joy Division. They were booked at "The Edge" in TO, but 6 days before the gig, Ian carried out his own sad plan. The venue sign was kept up for many months, heralding a show that never was.

Very hot day at CNE that summer. Floors were general admission (standing). Spoons were great as were FOS. Funny how Gordon Deppe (Guitarist/vocalist for Spoons now plays guitar with FOS as they tour currently). However, Talking Heads were amazing as were the Police. 1982 was a great year for UK New Wave. Concert Hall on Yonge Street (North of Bloor) was the centre for many of these. Squeeze, OMD, Depeche Mode, Duran Duran (twice [July at Concert Hall and August opening for Blondie] at CNE), The Jam, The Beat, ABC, Spandau Ballet, Thompson Twins, etc. The Beat was there... Also played Concert Hall in December of 1982 and Kingswood Theatre (Canada's Wonderland) in April 1983. I don't believe Joan Jett finished her entire set. The roadies threatened to cancel the show but when she came out, she got pelted all over again.

I’ve listened to about 20 episodes so far. I love hearing about the shows, but I especially like the many references to London, Ontario in the 80’s. You are bringing up so many places that I haven’t thought about in years. I used to go to teen dances at the Polish Hall all the time. I had no idea there were punk shows there. I also read the book, Murder City. Great book! Fun fact; I lived a few doors down from an escaped serial killer in London in the 80’s. Anyways, thanks for the memories and I look forward to future episodes. Especially the Smiths, because I was at that show. My memories of the show are vague, but I remember what led up to the show like it was yesterday.

Thanks again so much for listening. I am glad you are enjoying and that it's taking you back. The Polish Hall is still very much there, and I walk by it several days a week. @@mylifeinconcert My pre-concert story isn’t very interesting. I remember it was a weekday because I was working at a summer day camp earlier that day. One of the popular kids from my high school working at the camp asked me if I wanted to come to the Smiths concert that night and I said, sure. I gave him $20 for the ticket then he thanked me for buying the ticket because he couldn’t go to the show. So, here I was with a ticket to see the Smiths by myself. I thought he was inviting me to the show with all the popular kids lol…. I remember stressing all day about going to the show by myself. I have never gone to a concert by myself before or after. The only things I seem to remember is that there was a fifth member of the Smiths (Craig Gannon) and it was mentioned that it was his birthday. I also remembered that they didn’t sound that impressive. I wish I could remember more. I’m looking forward to hearing what your interpretation of the gig was. Maybe it will unlock some memories. Oh, on a side note. I did here of several sightings of Morrissey walking in the park wearing a red cardigan. There was also a girl from my high school that claimed to have hung out with Andy Rourke (RIP) and Mike Joyce.
