@@collesaint-db8jy I don't remember what exactly i used there but i don't think it matters too much. I like thicker picks, for this video i guess i used a Wegen twin pick 3,5mm or maybe a 5 or 6mm Manouche picks pick and most probably Argentine Savarez 10s

Needs thick strings. Besides the tone being a little too chimey, the strings go a out of tune when the chords are whacked as hard as Malcolm did, thick strings would prevent that. Also, I think on a Gretsch the bridge pickup isn't as close to the bridge as it's routed on a Les Paul.

Great work! I didn't know this genre is actually called rautalanka outside of Finland. It's a Finnish word and literally translated into ''iron wire'' I've also tried playing some rautalanka classics in Gypsy Swing style with some improvised choruses. Super fun!
@A.LautnerАй бұрын
Thank you very much Niilo! Very cool, would love to hear some of your versions! As far as i know the term only gets used for the finnish bands like The Sounds or The Mustangs, In order to do justice to the geographical, historical and socio-cultural subtleties. For the average guy in a surf rock forum neither The Shadows (from UK, different generation), nor The Ventures (huge influence, but earlier and not part of the localised movement) nor Les Jaguars (Canada, also tape delay not reverb) or Takeshi Terauchi (obv. from Japan, not sunny California) can be considered "true surf rock", so of course they need another term for european bands outside of California in the 60s (and even most of the time used tape delay instead of spring reverb haha) so they might have happily adopted the term that already existed in finland i guess haha

If not: in the background of this video you can hear the recording by Django Reinhardt himself from 30.06.1939, which the Rosenberg Trio version also is based on.
