I would luv to attend a CFI workshop where we do simulated flight training records. I'd luv to see how other CFIs log ground and flight training. Does anyone know of such workshops ? I don't want to just talk about it or watch a video. but rather I want to sit down and actually do it in a workshop environment, with a training lead. Think of it as a dry run for the real world of logging ground and flight training. Every CFI I talk to seem to have different methods. Flight Schools used software to record training records. I'd luv to attend a workshop where we do such things.

I wanted so bad to get my sport pilot license and then go cfi-s... I couldn't find anyone to train me in any LSA craft in the DFW and surrounding area. As I've now decided to just get my ppl I'm still wanting to get into LSA as a flight instructor at 150 hours. My question is this, does anyone know any hotspots to fly LSA? Besides Florida and the for mentioned California... Where is LSA booming in the continental USA so I can move there and teach light sport? Please send help. 😎

Question: if my CFI CERTIFICATE expires Feb., 2025, and comply with activity, but still display an exp date: do I need a renewal or not?
@NAFICFI22 күн бұрын
Thanks for your question! All CFIs, no matter the method of establishing recency, still need to submit and have a certifying officer sign an IACRA (or less preferred, paper 8710) application to have their currency recorded with the FAA. So the change goes into effect 01 December 2024...If one has a CFI plastic card that documents an expiration of February 2025, is this new 3-calendar month grace period (post- expiration) applicable? Or, does one have to wait for the new plastic (the final plastic), which does NOT document an expiration before one can benefit from the 3-month grace period post-expiration?

Great question! Charter operations are conducted under Part 135 of the regulations and the operator must have FAA authorization to conduct these operations. There have been documented cases in the past of pilots conducting operations that were required to have been authorized under Part 135, but weren't and the pilots attempted to cover up their actions by claiming the flight was for instructional purposes. As a tongue-in-cheek way of referencing these unauthorized operations, pilots refer to them as 134 and a half's. It highlights the importance of understanding the privileges and limitations of your certificate.

While clarifying who is and is not considered a “passenger” in the definitions, the FAA appears to have created more confusion by changing “passengers” to “persons” in 61.57. If I am not mistaken, the Kortokrax legal interpretation from the FAA assistant chief counsel (2006) asserted that neither students nor instructors were considered passengers, and therefore neither was required to meet the requirements of 61.57(b). Now that 61.57(a) and (b) refer to “persons” it would appear that flight instructors acting as PIC, such as when they are instructing a non-certificated (student) pilot, absolutely must maintain recent flight experience. It would be helpful to get some clarification on this change to the regulations.
@NAFICFI2 ай бұрын
Hi, Beth. Thanks for your comment! Footnote 31 of the final rule states that the Kortokrax legal interpretation, along with several others, were rescinded on July 23, 2023 because they were not supported by the regulations. If you'd like to read the final rule, the link is in the show notes.
@bethrehm11672 ай бұрын
@@NAFICFI Thank you! I was doing some more research today and found the three rescinded legal interpretations. But since they took the word "passengers" out of §61.57 altogether, they have become irrelevant anyway.
@mytech67792 ай бұрын
Bureaucrats trying to be clever and micromanage everyone rather than keep it simple. What I see is the change to "persons" just made becoming current impossible for anything other than single pilot aircraft and by extension tests for aircraft certification are equally impossible. Essential personnel are essential, which is why they are excluded from the definition of "passenger" in the first place. There was zero reason to change those currency paragraphs from passenger to person.
@NAFICFI2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your comment! The revised 61.57 will include paragraph (e)(5) which states that the currency requirements stated in the paragraphs where "persons" is used do not apply to a person receiving flight training from an authorized instructor provided three conditions are met. I suggest reading section IV, subsections C and F of the final rule for the FAA's reasoning on the change from "passengers" to "persons" in those paragraphs of 61.57. The link to the final rule is in the video description.

While the new reg will not apply to the student receiving instruction it doesn’t seem to exempt the instructor from the regulation. Does this mean CFI will now have to have night currency?

How can an LSA pilot become an instructor? Sport pilots are not allowed to monetize flight?
@NAFICFI2 ай бұрын
Thanks for your reply! Light sport pilots are eligible to become flight instructors with a sport pilot rating when they meet certain aeronautical knowledge, flight proficiency, and aeronautical experience requirements. These flight instructor privileges are more limited than flight instructors without a sport pilot rating. Essentially they only allow the Sport CFI to teach other light sport pilot applicants, and with additional requirements, Sport CFI applicants in aircraft for which the Sport CFI holds an endorsement. The full details are available in Part 61, Subpart K: www.ecfr.gov/current/title-14/chapter-I/subchapter-D/part-61/subpart-K?toc=1

How many training events are required within the three-calendar month "experience" window to keep your certificate valid? Do you need to complete a FIRC every 90 days or every 24 months?
@NAFICFI3 ай бұрын
Thank you for your questions. Once a flight instructor has established their recent experience, it is valid for 24 calendar months. If you wish to keep the same recent experience end date month (which functions in the same way our expiration dates do now) the CFI may re-establish their recent experience within their end date month or within the three preceding calendar months. If a CFI's recent experience lapses, they have three calendar months after their end date to re-establish their recent experience by completing a FIRC. We're here to help if you have additional questions. Also feel free to reach out to us at [email protected]. Thank you!

@NAFICFI2 ай бұрын
Thank you for your comment. If only we could have predicted the future when publishing this podcast episode! Most of this will remain the same. The only change will be the "reinstatement via FIRC" option for the first three calendar months after a CFI's recent experience has lapsed. If the CFI fails to reinstate via FIRC within that window, all of this content will apply to reinstatement.

The example at 13:10 in the video is great. I'm preparing for my PPL checkride, and just last week I was thinking about a hypothetical scenario a DPE could give me: taking off from a short field on a hot day with three friends. One of the options I came up with in my mind (in addition to taking off early in the day) was asking my friends to take a taxi to an airport with a longer runway, or flying them there one by one. Nice to see an actual example that is similar to what I thought about.

I did my reinstatement a few years ago. It had been over 25 years, but back then I got over 3000 hours dual given. Gold seal CFI, CFII, MEI fixed wing, CFI rotorcraft. As my son grew up, to my delightment, he got hooked early. So to get back I got my glider certificate together with him. This basically got me back in the system. For the reinstatement I chose the CFII ride, however since my currency on the FAA certificate was expired (I had been flying for a major airline in Europe) I needed a flight review. While doing this I realized the CFI ride would have been the easiest. Teaching lazy8 or 8’s on were still in my spine. But, even though I’ve done hundreds of RNP/RNP AR approaches, I had never used the G430. This took the most time to prepare. I’ve since been doing EFIRC’s, and legally current, but I wouldn’t teach now without proper preparation. My son went off to the Air Force.🙂

Most CFIs can do it, but good luck finding a plane to rent within driving distance. Certified complex/HP planes are an endangered species thanks to decades of federal bureaucracies adding nickles and dimes to the costs, and difficulty of approving clean sheet designs(since the FAA replace the CAB). Which is why most of the performant modern aircraft designs are "experimental" kitplanes, or you must step up to turboprops which are hard to justify short of a paying commercial operation.

Need to add power? Carb heat hot, check carb ice. At altitude, re-lean. Google map check your departure airport so you know where you're landing in an engine failure. Came here for the tree landing, appreciated the oil-guzzling cylinder failure. I'm always noting places to land, but you reminded me to also pay en route attention to G/S (winds) for that purpose. Whereas I usually only care about the runway and the practice area, or en route fuel usage. I'll add constant wind direction to my list now. Good point. I can't decide whether you're incredibly unlucky or lucky. What happened to those golf-course-like patches of ground beside your tree? I can't see details, but they looked promising to me. Yes, unless there's shallow water beach or retractable gear water is not an option. Watch out for coastal quicksand too. There's that. What I don't like about highways is that a lot of them are only 2 lanes wide and you won't see a lot of obstacles, wires, until it's too late. If you commit and traffic or obstacles destroy your plan you're out of options, whereas a good field doesn't change although AOPA seems to think the impact will be really really nasty on the body and all those little internal organs that we've grown accustomed to. I suppose if you're about to hit an overhead sign on a highway you dive and burn off the momentum in the float. That dispels one problem.
