Liner-lock... whomp whomp. Knaffs is such a hipster brand (they're like the budget version of "james Brand", also a trash company), they make NOTHING of any real inherently great design (unlike say the Vosteed Raccoon and the Civivi Vision FG, both infinitely superior knives) but all the soft-handed internet children who don't actually USE their knives flock to them and all their custom cartoon scales.

@@salimoneus thanks for watching! I can't recall if the standard Centofante has the same blade rap issue, but if it does, it would be less severe then it is on the upgraded version due to the FRN backspacer and less steel parts in general.

Ur doing great!! I love them all keep up the good work ❤
@squirts1Ай бұрын
5:50 You're explanation is not exactly accurate. They all have a "kick" so to speak that contacts the back spring (including the centofante). The difference is WHERE the kick contacts the backspring. Most slipjoints and backlock knives (that don't have stop pins) behave like the centofante. Jack Wolf knives included. Spyderco's other lockbacks are atypical in that regard. partly because they have forward finger choils which places the "kick" much further down the blade as seen here 10:54... As a result, the kick contacts the backspring at or PAST the backspring pivot point making it impossible flex the backspring... Effectively acting as an immovable stop pin. It's not really a matter of how tall the kick is, but where it is.

This IS still a hollow grind though. Sabre grind just refers to the height of the grind, as in where the primary bevel starts. From there, the primary bevel can be flat ground, hollow ground, scandi, etc. Perfectly possible for a knife to be a sabre grind with hollow primary bevel, as is the case here. AFAIK, the blade design is no different than the OG Centofante 3 release.
@mcsquirgleАй бұрын
So your right about sabre referring to the height of the grind, but it still has no indication of being hollow ground whatsoever. If it is hollow ground, it is the faintest most subtle hollow grind I have ever seen. So much so that functionally it might as well be a flat saber grind. By my eye-chrometers 👀 it is both functionally and literally a flat saber grind

The issue with the edge hitting the back spring is widely referred to as blade rap. I saw that another commenter suggested filing down the contact point on the spring. Did you try that? I love the look of the knife but the blade rap is definitely a considerable flaw. I can appreciate your frustration after all the fine sharpening work, for that to happen.
@mcsquirgle2 ай бұрын
I have heard of blade rap but I didnt realize that it was refering to this issue. Thank you for clarifying that for me! I ended up not filing down the contact point on the spring because a friend of mine noticed that even if I had done that it would have still made contact with the edge at a different point. Its frustrating actually. still love the knife though.
@dongkhamet13512 ай бұрын
@mcsquirgle I found my way onto a Blade Forums thread where a self-professed novice Centofante 3 owner raises precisely this issue. One of the old dogs advises him that with suitable awareness the issue is unproblematically avoidable. I like that take. There are so many variables and trade-offs in the world of knife design. I think you identified the Achilles Heel on this one - so now we know: close her softly and don't squeeze her when shut. Say, what if you glue a strip of welt leather onto the inside of the spring? That plus awareness will surely solve the problem pretty much outright. I think that blade rap proper might be when there is such clearance between edge and spring that although the edge will not contact the spring when the knife is closed, it will, if snapped shut, over-travel and rap on the spring. I don't think the leather will make it perfect because you could still mash your edge into the leather or even right the way through - but that might be hard to do by accident. So I suppose that even from a hard snap shut or incidental squeeze in the pocket, edge deformation would be so minimal as to be invisible to the naked eye and fairly imperceptible in use. I am more of a fan of flat grinds; full, saber, Scandi etc, than hollow; so this blade is very attractive to me. I am kind of tempted, especially now that at least in my mind I have resolved the blade rap issue! :D
@mcsquirgle2 ай бұрын
@@dongkhamet1351 I agree. I have managed to avoid the problem entirely now that I am aware of it. I really don't mean to defame the knife in any way because I do adore it. That's actually a pretty clever idea, to glue leather to the spring and backspacer. I think there is room for it. If I notice any more damage to the edge I will definitely be attempting that. Thank you sir.
@dongkhamet13512 ай бұрын
@mcsquirgle In my estimation you have not defamed the knife whatsoever. By your review one can vicariously appreciate its many good qualities and also get a preventative heads-up on the rap issue. Good job!

What a lovely video review! Thoroughly fun. I got myself one, only with the Talon grind. I will keep an eye out for the full flat, that's awesome. It reminds me of a liner lock I have from a French company named Perceval. More robust blades may be more fashionable nowadays but they lose out a lot on cutting performance. Perhaps hence the obsession with better steels at higher HRC... which still won't help that much if they have the geometry of a cleaver. I agree the Al Mar knives are beautiful. So are those Moki - I had seen something of them before (on Slick Slicers channel, if I recall), now you've piqued my interest!
@mcsquirgle2 ай бұрын
@@dongkhamet1351 thank you for the kind words my friend! I definitely prefer a thin and slicey flat grind to the talon grind for cutting, but those talons are very cool looking. @dongkhamet13512 ай бұрын
@mcsquirgle I've been perusing some more of your videos. Indeed I just offered my services as an overpriced Stanley blade modder as well as some unsolicited opinion or other somewhere I expect. If not it's likely coming. As for the Talon grind, one might suppose it to be the stabbier rather than the slicer, however from the slingshot whittler's perspective it also has potential. Further research required.
