The old BIOS int13h interface from the original IBM PC can access up to 8,4 GB hard disks, which was enough at the time. In 1995 the BIOS API was extended with logical block accessing (which the int13,ah=42h, "read logical sector", uses) and the new interface uses a 64-bit integer for sector indexing. It means that with 512-byte sectors it can access up to 8589934592 terabyte hard disks. Actual physical hardware still uses only 48 bits (LBA48) so the current limits of the BIOS haven't been reached yet. Microsoft commonly spreads disinformation claiming that BIOS can only access 2 TB, but the 2 TB limit has nothing to do with BIOS. The limit exists in the partitioning scheme that MS-DOS and Windows are hardcoded to use with BIOS, but BIOS itself is not hardcoded to any partitioning scheme. Actually the 64-bit versions of Windows, starting from Windows XP, also automatically use GPT partitioning with BIOS (even though that should be impossible, according to Microsoft's current propaganda) if the sector size is something else than 512 bytes or the hard disk is larger than 2 TB. In other circumstances Windows uses the same type of partitioning table that MS-DOS also uses.
