My condolences🩷. Thanks so much for sharing your journey during this season of your life!🙏🏾 The neat thing about sisterlocs is that it enables one to actually see the growth that was always occurring. Unless we are extremely ill, our hair is in a constant state of growth; the real issue prior to sisterlocking is breakage at the ends that occurs more rapidly than growth from the scalp. Sisterlocking enables the hair to retain its 1/4 to 1/2 inch length that it naturally achieves monthly. With sisterlocs, there is limited chance of hair loss at the ends due to breakage or over-manipulation. Another point to be aware of is the weight of the hair. The weight is caused by the retention of shed hair. With sisterlocs, it is impossible to remove the 80 to 100 strands of hair that sheds daily. With that being said, the shed hair adds volume which looks awesome but the weight can lead to traction alopecia. This is where one must be mindful and pay attention to the weight as the locs grow. As the hair gets heavier it may be best to wear updos more often than allowing the hair to hang down. By wearing updos, there is a less likely chance of the margins or edges to break and a less likely chance of losing individual locs. The crown of the scalp can be volatile because, unlike hair growth around the sides and at the back, hair on the crown of the scalp has hormone receptors at the root. Therefore, as our hormones fluctuate and female hormones decrease, male hormones become more dominant, resulting in thinning at the crown of the scalp.

I have tried EVERY hairstyle, I even had the traditional locks. I wanted sisterlocks because i can wear my hair in styles without restrictions. Grreat video and your hair grows fast.. ❤

Pray your in a better mental space now. ❤Your hair is beautiful I'm on my sisterlocks journey since 3/28/24. It's a process I tell you😂😂😂. I would like to thank you for your transparency and motivation speech. My mother in law embarrassed me in front of everyone at a family reunion and said I don't like your hair you should have consulted with me before you got that done to your hair. I said as opposed to what you have weave in yours, this us my GOD given hair. But I really thought my hair was beautiful at least that's what my husband said. Lol then she proceeded to try and touch my hair I backed away so quick and said no you can not touch my hair with your negative hands. Then 3 drinks later when she is inebriated 😂she said oh I'm going to get my hair done just like that for $75. I said sweetheart this is definitely not a $75 hair style but I'm glad you want to emulate this look.😂 You're right the way we wear our hair shouldn't divide us.

That's funny you wished you colored your hair prior to install. I did a fresh color (blonde) prior to install against my SL consultants wishes but, I wish I didn't. It would've given that hair to grow color free and be stronger. I have fine thin hair but, with SL it's no longer that way. I'm almost 4 years and had my first trim because my hair was uneven due to the locking process and color from over the years. I still love my color but, all my original color is gone.

Thanks for your transparency. Your SLs are beautiful. I had micro braid locks installed (because I didn’t know the difference between SL and ML) in 2017 but cut them off in 2022 because my crown was thinning and I panicked. I miss them so much. I’ve been taking Nutroful supplements that cost $80 something per month. If I see a significant difference after 6 months I’ll consider sisterlocks. I’ve seen a number of SL women posting about their challenges with alopecia but I can’t see any thinning because the locks are so full and beautiful. Thx again. Take care of yourself!

Thanks! As I read through the comments, I realize that I may have left out 3 important factors: my crown has been a problem area for years, I had radiation treatment in 2019-I’m not sure if it’s impact on my body over time, and the last few years have been quite stressful!

My original intent was to go to an African American derm, but she was booked a few months out, so I had the option of working with another doc. I do believe it’s matters. When I book again, it will be with the doc I first planned to work with.
