Hi Giltesa, Thank you for producing such a great product! I'm in the middle of installing an instance of V3.2! I wanted to comment and give you a suggestion for a modification consideration that may make this mod more appealing to the community. With the release of the funnyplaying FPGA emulation hardware, Funnyplaying has also released a USB-C shell that includes an opening for the port already. Unfortunately it looks your mod may have been designed before this shell was released. As i'm working on this GBC I see that the components to the left of the USB-C port on the mod board take just enough space that the USB-C port on your mod is a few millimeters out of line from where the FunnyPlaying shell has a pre-made cutout. If you are still iterating on this mod, I would like to suggest to you to consider looking into modifying the location of these components else where so that you can slide the USB-C port to the left and then include a recommendation to use the Funnyplaying USB-C shell so that modders can avoid some of the shell trimming steps. Just a thought! once again, thank you!

Great video. These seem very easy to follow instructions. From what I've just watched this seems to be a beautifully well thought out product. I ordered one of these kits yesterday from "zedlabz" (I'm in the UK, so it's easier to buy small stuff like this from UK based companies than risk it incurring import taxes), After buying it I saw the link on their web page to this video, so came here and watched it. You made installing the boards look like a reasonably simple task (even though you were having to do the whole thing with a camera in your way. :D). I've got no love of soldering the PVC coated wires for the LED board, so I'm thinking that I'll be looking into substituting those for some of the 28 or 30 gauge silicon sheathed wire I've got around here. I might have problems trying to get superglue to stick silicon wire to the edge of the board, but I'm sure I can work something out if that's the case. I've only just noticed that you have an online shop link in the description, so I stopped typing to have a look over there. From what I saw it seems you redesigned this kit. It's a shame I didn't notice that before, as the revised battery connector location would have been a lot more convenient. I'm assuming that as the zedlabz website only has images of (at a guess) the v1.1, then this is the only version they've bought from you? I'm just curious if there's any chance their current stock might be v1.3's or v2.0's and they haven't updated the image? After a bit more looking around in your online shop I stumbled upon the "Game Boy Color: Custom Motherboard" project....... I'd just like to say, I find the prospect of being able to build a 100% brand new GBC really appealing, where having a modern IPS screen, a lithium battery, a built in charger, a better audio amp, and tactile buttons wasn't just after thoughts "Hotwired" all over an original (And dated) piece of hardware. It's all dependant on what the resulting board costs, but if it's not ludicrously expensive, I could see a lot of other people getting excited about the possibility of building themselves a brand new GBC rather than having to base their high end build around a major component salvaged from a 25 year old handheld unit. By "not ludicrously expensive" I'm not saying it needs to be "Cheap", but if the price isn't astronomically more than buying a working GBC just for it's motherboard, then buying all the upgrade boards necessary to get similar functionality out of it, I can see a new all in one board being a winner purely for folks who want to avoid the risk of messing something up while soldering all the addon boards to an old, and potentially unreliable, piece of kit. --------------------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Edit - For anyone looking to buy these kits in the UK, The one Zedlabz currently send out (As of 14/04/24) are version 1.2. In the end, as the position of the battery connector on the V2.0 seems more convenient I decided to order a couple of these direct from "The Giltesa's Shop" in Spain. The shipping to the UK isn't that expensive, and going by the tracking, they should get here in a week or so.. There's also the swap from the v1.x's TP4056 charging chip to the IP2312U that the v2.0 uses. Both chips work fine, but from what I read, the IP2312U is a little better suited for a device that may be getting used while charging. If the battery is charged while in use the TP4056 chip can underestimate the true state of charge a little, and therefore keep charging an already full battery. The higher the load the further it can overcharge. We're not talking about overcharging to "battery igniting" levels or anything, but the further above 4.2v you go, the quicker a li-po will "Wear out". Because of how the IP2312U reads state of charge, it's apparently somehow more likely to catch this over voltage situation sooner and stop charging. Oh, and for anyone who wants to either make themselves more than one battery, or chose to look for batteries with the correct connector pre installed (Though I couldn't find any that weren't 3x the price of the same cell with bare wires) the battery connector used is a "JST SH 1.0". You can get the pins and housings to crimp on by yourself, but you'll need the specific crimping plyers to do it. So it's not a particularly cheap option, but it's an option none the less. I chose to buy a few pre made leads, and will be soldering them to the cells protection boards once I've worked out the exact length they need to be.

Saludos!

Yes, it was very frustrating, especially when the manufacturer didn't want to produce the boards again and simply offered a $60 discount coupon. This weekend, I've been fixing the boards, and I've already done a little more than half of them. It's been quite a bit of work, but the finish is good. Maybe I've used a bit more solder than necessary in the soldering, but well, I did it by hand with the air soldering station. shop.giltesa.com/wp-content/uploads/2023/03/GB2-v2.1-resistors.jpg I've tested to ensure there's a good electrical connection with the new resistors, that the rest of the circuit is functioning properly, and that the battery is recognized and charging. Everything is as it should be. I'll put them up on the website this week :) Thanks for the comment!

Can you still lift the pads with the air soldering iron?
@giltesa Жыл бұрын
With an air soldering station, it's nearly impossible to peel off the pads from the motherboard. Simply heat the area and use tweezers to lift the connector without applying force. When all the connector legs are sufficiently heated, it will detach on its own. However, remember to protect all adjacent areas very well with Kapton tape, or you'll damage them (like the link cable connector or the side button).

@@giltesa I have an FX951 and a variety of tips. That should be sufficient? I guess my concern is heating up both sides of the capacitor with the legs well underneath. Makho has a video where he did it, but he used two soldering irons. Makes me wish I had soldering tweezers. I have yet to upgrade to something like an FM203. But I guess what you mean by a decent soldering iron you mean consistent heat, which does FX951 does. So I should be good with what I have?
@giltesa Жыл бұрын
@@Luke42652 I think your soldering station is better than mine, an AOYUE 968A+, so you shouldn't have any problems. Exactly, I mean that it has enough power to heat the ground plane of the motherboard. A trick I follow is to add a good amount of solder to one of the legs, then heat it until it melts. Then, I insert a piece of paper between the capacitor and the leg, remove the soldering iron, and the solder solidifies. Since the paper is in between, the capacitor cannot reattach to the motherboard. Finally, I heat the other leg of the capacitor and remove it.

Hi! I have (or I will have 😊) 3 kits: - GBC -> Battery charger. It requires the original or a compatible DC converter. - GB2 -> Battery charger, DC converter, and safe play-and-charge. It can be used with a DC jack. - GBCPRO -> Battery charger, DC converter, safe play-and-charge, and audio amplifier. So, the GB2 is better than GBC but not better than GBCPRO, unless compatibility with powering through the DC Jack connector is essential. The installation difficulty between GB2 and GBCPRO is similar, as both require removing the original DC converter, which is the most challenging part of the installation.
