The Opal card mentioned would be the seniors Opal card . There was also a marvellous clock shop in Berry when I last visited , but I wouldn't care to lug home a grandfather clock on the train ! 😅

When the Illawarra line was duplicated and re-routed ,one of the original single line tunnels was retained and is still in use as the escarpment was considered too fragile from mining works to risk collapse by boring new tunnels . This could be the Coal cliff tunnel , and the track merging is visible from the train .

I have just discovered your videos. This looks like a great trip. Do I understand correctly that the train from Sydney to Newcastle Interchange has toilets on board? However the bus to Nelson bay does not even though it takes 1.5 hours, but I suppose you can alight at one of those major stops where there would be toilets.

Had your videos turn up in my suggestions a couple of days ago on 31/1/2025 and it inspired me to get a NSW Seniors card and Gold Opal card. I always though the process would take days and be labourious and having to front up to Government offices in person with printed forms, stat decs and ID. It took about 10 minutes all on line and that's because I forgot my Services NSW password and had to reset it. Just need two forms of Government issued ID for the seniors card which you type in the details as I did or it has the option to use your computer's camera to take a photo. I used my driver's licence and medicare card. Once the Seniors card application was completed, I was instantly issued with an email with a Senior card ID number in it. I then went to the Services NSW website to apply for the Gold Opal card and I expect to receive the Gold Opal card in the mail sometime in the week commencing 3/2/2025. Any chance you can tell us how to use the Seniors card to it's best advantage during your videos? I've been eligible for the Gold card for a couple of years but remained using the black opal card because I thought the process would be a pain as explained above. Just thinking I'll be getting around for the whole day for $2.50 very soon seems like I'll be rorting the system but it will encourage me to use public transport more, rather than using my car and I'll be pulling stunts like you and travelling around NSW's 800,642 square kilometres where ever Opal is available. Here's a size comparison website to show you how big NSW really is mapfight.xyz/map/nsw.australia/

Great video. I worked at an Illawarra line State Rail depot at Helensburgh in the 1980s, on the edge of the Royal National Park. We worked on installing the electrification of the line from Waterfall to Wollongong. Worked in the Coalcliff tunnel (built 1884 - 1888, 1km in length) for several months, which was pretty hairy at times when we had to quickly pack up the work gear, when the diesel coal trains came through. Good to see the train trip again on an electric, back in the 1980s the steam trains were gone, it was all diesel trains through to Wollongong. 👍

My guess is that eventually the day will come when they'll have to drill a new tunnel for Coal Cliff. Drill baby Drill :) I lived at Jannali and went to JBHS and managed to see the last days of steam from our classrooms, then the 48's took over. Cheers Kerry

This is my great grandfather Arthur Springthorpe. Illawarra Mercury (Wollongong NSW) 19 Feb 1948 p 8. Train Driver Burnt On Face and Arms. The 8pm train Wollongong to Sydney, was delayed forty minutes at Coalcliff last night, until a driver could be brought by taxi from Thirroul to replace the original driver of the train, who was badly burned about the right arm and face while the train was going through the Scarborough tunnel. Going through the tunnel the fireman had opened the fire box and when the flames, shot out, he had to jump back out of their range. The driver, Arthur Springthprpe 60 of 54 Arcadia St Penshurst, had to cross from one side of the engine to the other through the, flames to apply the air brake and was burned about the face and right arm. The train was then driven onto the Coalcliff signal box and Springthorpe was removed from the engine and conveyed to the Coledale Hospital by the Bulli Ambulance.

Thank you, Cassandra, for the glimpse into your family history. My grandfather, Vince Taylor, also worked as a driver and fireman around the same time as your grandfather. Back then, anything to do with transport was a highly sought-after career. Drivers and firemen were prominent members of society. I've looked closely at pictures of my grandparents taken in the 1930s during the Great Depression. They are always dressed in their finest clothes, while many of the unemployed at the time lived in rags. We forget that their lives were fraught with danger driving steam locos. As you've said, even a simple mistake could end in disaster. I often see a steam locomotive chugging along on a picnic train and wonder how it is still able to run, considering all our health and safety laws. Cheers, Kerry

Update: In the video, I mistakenly said trains leave Central for Newcastle every hour. They actually depart every half hour. Express trains leave hourly, and about half an hour later, a train making all stops departs for Newcastle Interchange. I prefer the express, but the all-stations train only adds about 20 minutes to the journey. Here's a link to the timetable: transportnsw.info/routes/details/intercity-trains/ccn/02CCN Cheers Kerry
