There are mountain lions here. I’ve heard them myself while riding my horse on old logging roads where I grew up. I spent a lot of alone time in these woods. But one thing I did hear quite often was something calling my name in the middle of vast forestry land I would ride on. I never would answer it though, I was told never to answer it.

Mountain lions have been in Tennessee since the 1960s. Their scat is all over wooded areas and are game cam photos on TWRA's website. Bobcats are a daily thing, cans of cat food and they show up on game cam the same night.

Considering how difficult it is to generally ID and track wild cats to begin with... the DNR may well not have the resources or authority to make that claim.

As it gets warmer, show the plants emerging and growing. That will help folks identify them. You are sometimes showing images of plants that aren’t what you’re talking about, which could be confusing to the viewer. Good idea though! Keep working on it, don’t get discouraged.

My wife and have a larger lot than normal, about 3/4 of an acre with the backyard alone being a fenced 1/2 acre, in a city in Texas. We have a ton of huge oak trees, like 35, and we turned the entire backyard into a microhomestead over 4 years. 2 ponds, 2 greenhouses, 18 raised beds, a 30ft tunnel garden for in-ground growing, 250 gallon rain collection, a 1,500 square foot wildflower patch, a beehive, 4 peach trees, 4 mulberry trees, and 4 ducks and 4 chickens. We produce probably 60-70% of all our annual calories, minus dairy, meat, and wheat. Its a HUGE commitment and a ton of work but so worth it and super rewarding and fun.

I mean if they’re all the way down here in California, we just had our last one near Los Angeles euthanized last year :(( so sad but besides the fact if they can survive in our poor environment I’m sure they have moved to other areas that aren’t so populated to be away from all the people, trust me big cats are really that smart.

I'm moving back onto family land in WV soon. They already keep chickens and have goats to come & munch the grass. I'd like to start a garden in the spring, but all my cousin's attempts have just resulted in a tasty treat for the deer and a playground for the chickens to scratch in. Would you have any recommendations for protecting a garden? She did try a chicken wire fence one year, but the deer get over it easily & tore out the young plants. Love your videos & thank you!
@firewindrefuge
@firewindrefuge Ай бұрын
@TabuKat I appreciate your kind words! In terms of advice... The way we deal with wild animals eating crops, is we grow a seperate amount of food/crop specifically to give as an offering to the wildlife. If we intentionally divert their attention away from our food, and show them they have their own food to eat, they have always left our crop alone. Might seem silly, but it's worked every year for over a decade. Happy homesteading to you, and so happy to have you back in WV!

it's better to let the trees surround your house than cut them. I love West Virginia because its mountains have more trees than other states in the USA. I hope people from the city moving to rural areas won't cut many trees there. West Virginia is beautiful because it has plenty of trees in the mountains.
