Thanks--great video. Everything's fine in my playback except the Wind Chimes. They start off sounding like spastic claves, but then clear up to a nice, real "wind-chimey", light sound. I've adjusted all the parameters (including "send" on the Aria Player, but it still sounds like a space toilet at first. I'll probably just try to use the crescendo so the first part of the sound can't be heard, unless you have any ideas. I'd rather not try to tweak it in my DAW if I can get it sounding good in Finale.

The fact that it takes that long just to place a single measure of drumset notation means the program is overthinking for simple notation. One of the most user friendly notation software for drumset has and always will be Cakewalk Pro Audio 9. It was so easy to notate Literally anything drum set wise. And programs like Finale and Musescore really just overthink it.

I am about ready to toss Finale into the trash can and try a different music notation program. I’ve got the latest (v27.4.1.146) version, and it just stinks-non-user friendly and cumbersome. I do exactly what it, or KZbin instructors, says I should do-and it doesn’t work!! It makes my workflow horribly slow to work with. I’ll gladly pay for a program that works-it’s not Finale!!! Feel so ripped off!!!!!

Hi Tim, new to using Finale. watched your videos, especially Writing drum notation. Question: regarding note shapes. For example, the snare drum cross-stick is shown as a note with a circle. How do you change that to an X (which is pretty standard). thankx for your great vids!!👌

For examples between text in a Word document use Tools>Advanced Tools>Graphics, draw a rectangle over the part you want to copy, then go to Graphics in the menu bar and click 'Export Selection', choose the format (JPG?) and where you want to save it. The in the Word document 'insert', choose the file where the picture is stored, double click on it and there it is.

This video is OUTSTANDING. First of all, this guy worked on Neil Peart / Stewart Copeland Books. Your drum notation resume is secure for eternity :) "Finale will do what you need it to do - have faith that you will eventually find it". Truer words were never spoken. I thought I was a nut for wanting to create my "cheet sheet" charts in finale. I was thinking *maybe* it's just not ideal for this. I was making another attempt at it, then found this video. Now I'm sold. If *you're* doing this exact same thing, at your expert level of finale use / yet also needing to be practical for the drumming you're doing on Saturday night, I'm in!!! Beautiful "working drummer chart". I hope to have some beautiful charts as well! (I'm creating charts these days for drumming at church once / month or so on Sundays - I often get the songs less than a week in advance - I want to make a chart that I could "save as" different versions - the Sunday Service edit, the "stock" version, etc. I suspect I'll soon get to where I can create these as fast as handwritten roadmap charts). One item I found that's super useful - hiding rests when using two layers (Ctrl-Select the rest, then hit "H"). This, along with your two layer approach, and I'm off and running! EDIT: You *did* mention this at 37:55. Let us know if you run for president. You have my vote, Joe Bergamini! (I was always a "stems up" guy until seeing an example online recently of bass / snare down, cymbals up can be insanely more clear in some situations - I'm now sold on using both, depending on the situation...)

How did you place the kick and snare notes at 9:44 with your keyboard? I typically have done this with a mouse. With the latest finale, there are so many options for the desired note that are close vertically that it’s hard to even pick a simple snare note with the mouse. I saw in another video you were in with a few other people that you use a special input device / keyboard. Is that necessary to enter these bass and snare notes this quick / easily? Finale is getting harder to use :(

As a percussion instructor, it's worth it for me just to finally get the correct playback on percussion instruments. Though, this is something that should have always been.

Great video, Tim. I especially liked how you showed us to use note heads to denote open and closed hi hats rather than using the articulation tool. Another great tip was your showing is how to create the legend. If would help if you would include instructions on how to zero it the measure numbering for that notation legend measure. That way, the song would begin with measure 1.

Great video! Two thumbs up to all stems up. I've stumbled into many of these things over the years, yet learned new tricks from your video. Finding these things in Finale on your own are tough. This video should be Assignment Number 1 for anyone wanting to use finale for drumset notation!!!

Hi, I just want to say that this feature is very helpful from a teaching perspective. I also appreciate the 27.4 update with overall improvements but I'm waiting for the 28 version, hoping in an improved playback management. It would be great grouping instruments in the mixer by sections, so with just one click muting the section you don't want to hear in playback. Otherwise making possible to put in mute (or in solo) different instruments just by clicking the mouse holding the shift key, for example, the flute and then the bassoon, resulting selected all the instruments between the two. I also hope in a better integration with NotePerformer, allowing col legno, snap pizzicato (Bartok), détaché, sul tasto, sul ponticello, no vibrato, molto vibrato, just triggered by the technique text, as for pizzicato with the strings (pizz.).

Terrific! BUT I need a legend for NotePerformer's nonpitched percussion sounds. Do I have to build it from scratch? Using ScoreManager to switch your template to NP Basic Orc Perc produces a terrible result. Most note are not in the Map and are placed way below the staff. For example Midi Note 37 doesn't show - even tho it is in NotePerformers; manual as existing in the Orchestral Percussion

I just (and finally) got finale. I am creating some leadsheets and sometimes to write very simple "arrangements", for example, starting the song with the drums doing a cetain rhtyhm. Is there a way to write the rhythm on a voice/ flute staff using "percussion notes", meaning no pitch? I can't find this

I agree that this was a good intro to Finale. However, the seminar was billed as "Drum Charts 101." After a few drum notation-specific points at the beginning, it quickly devolved into "Finale 101." Joe kept talking about entering drum parts using Simple Entry. I iwish he had spent more time, with the document zoomed in, entering a drum part. That is what I do (use Simple Entry for everything), but I find entering drum notation to be VERY tedious. Some tips would have been nice. I've been using Finale since the Allegro days, so most of this was simple review.
