Do you feel like You could manage to stay in all that wool in summer hot sunny day on open field?

As part of my hobby as a Living Historian, yes I can say that I am able to do this. I have done events in Spain, Belgium and the Netherlands doing various periods, in various uniforms and can tell you that once the uniform is on, you get used to the temperature and then it's just a case of preventing dehydration through drinking.

How effective were the gas masks? Assuming you put it on quickly enough when the gas hit, how effective were they at actually protecting you from something like chlorine?
@sebastijanglozinic86303 ай бұрын
Odd that they called the Lee Enfield "short magazine", when it had double the capacity of most bolt action rifles at the time.
@MatthewsMilitaryMoments3 ай бұрын
@sebastijanglozinic8630 the short bit refers to the shortened barrel, as it's predecessor had a longer barrel. The magazine refers to the fact that it's magazine fed.

A FANTASTIC presentation of what American military often terms “junk on the bunk” Obviously you laid out 3x the amount of gear that a typical Tommy wore in 1944. But I am curious as to how strict the soldiers carry inventory was monitored in the British Expeditionary Force?

The PVC jerkin was still in use on Royal Observer Corps "cold weather" posts up until the ROC was stood down on 30th September 1991. I'll confess that I found them a bit stiff and impractical and suspect that the leather version would have been more effective.

The DLI, the forefather of the Light Infantry. My Battlion was renamed 7th Battlion Light Infantry ( Durham) in 1989 before I joined the regulars. It's now called the 8th Battlion the Rifles. My great grandfather's unit was virtually wiped out during the Somme and there was only a few men left including my great grandfather and they were transferred to the DLI to replace their losses. He held them with such affection and respect for the rest of his life.

To be fair, the Prince Albert's Somerset LI, Duke of Cornwall's LI, King's Own Yorkshire LI, King's Shropshire LI, and Durham LI, together formed the lineage of the Light Infantry when formed in 1968

Excellent overview, Matthew. In a previous life (the 80s), I did an impression of a British soldier (51st Highland Division, 42nd Black Watch) so this brings back a lot of memories.

Mens participation in war represents men's weakness and fawning to female gynocentrism. The communists destroy men with feminism and the conservatives destroy men with chivalry.

For a theatrical production we rented some ww1 uniforms and and there was something like the modified ground sheet you showed. It had a rubberised outer and a lining that felt rather like corduroy. Warmest, most useful thing. Are you familiar with such an item? I’m wondering if I can find any more information.
@MatthewsMilitaryMoments2 жыл бұрын
From what what you've told me, it sounds more like a Private Purchase Officers Raincape. However, I shall have a look around and do some research and if anything matches it, I shall let you know. However, like I said, it sounds to me like a private purchase item.
