I have very severe emphysema and also I co2 retainer Last yr I got respiratory failure and pneumonia then caught covid 2 days before being discharged from the hospital I felt fine for the few few days then it hit me. I had a really bad exacerbation and had to go back on antibiotics and steroids, it was awful and I never returned to my base line, I’m now breathless all the time, I was assessed as needed care as I can no longer care for myself. Before all this happened I was still walking round looking after horses cleaning stables, I used to get breathless but after a few min of stopping but it was a different kind of breathlessness, nothing like it is now. I get breathless doing nothing and I’m really struggling My lung function is now 27%, I have lost 2stone because I struggle to eat, I feel full all the time and completely lost my appetite. Iv lost my muscles the skin around my calf muscle is just loose skin now. To top it all I have severe osteoporosis and while I had respiratory failure and pneumonia I had a terrible pain in my back from coughing. I was told it was all muscular. 5 months later I was re admitted with my gallbladder and had to have a Ct scan because they couldn’t see the gallstone that I had. Ct revealed two severe wedge fractures at T6/7 and also that I now have kyphosis caused by the fractures. The report also say the fractures were present on X-ray when I was admitted for respiratory failure and pneumonia So all that time I was as told to carry on as normal as the pain was muscular. My lungs showed wide spread emphysema with very little sparing in the middle and that I was med to severe, it was the spirometer that showed I was very severe and how much lung function I have. I told the specialist that my inhalers don’t work like they used to but he said I’m on every thing that he can give I e Trimbow x2 puffs a day Nebulizer that I have salbutamol and saline through also Ventolin for my rescuer, carbocisteine and morphine I also have mild bronciatrasis which he Ct picked on also So what chance do I have of making things easier for myself Iv seen the specialist once no follow up appointment The specialist I needed for my spine refused to see me as the gap between my fracture and being diagnosed was to long, so cement on my breaks was not an option and they took many months to heal. I feel Devasted my life changed with a click of the finger. I’m now housebound because the humidity effects me terribly if I go out, even going in the car is not an option for me anymore 😢😢

Excellent video Dr Zafar! Today my person got his pepbuddy and it is helping so much because his attempt at purse breathe was hyperventilating with puckered lips! We needed pepbuddy so much. He was resistant to the idea so I trained him with a straw whike we waited fir pepbuddy in the mail. He like pepbuddy more and it actually INCREASED his oxygen! I hope is is one of the people from your study that benefits the most.

Oh…relief. My person just started pepbuddy and it is doing what a lot of talk, Multiple videos on purse breathing or explanation could not do. It’s helping him do purse breathing correctly and he feels better and we are/were in the beginning of a mini exacerbation. I’ll post updates. I read about pepbuddy on Reddit COPD subgroup but they don’t seem to understand the device. I am so optimistic right now!🙌🙏thank you dr for your good research and simple but brilliant idea! I love that it prevents air stacking and helps fight hyperinflation (is this right?) does it help reduce CO2 build up?

Thank you for sharing your feedback and experience. Yes! It does exactly what you said. We have not measured the CO2 levels directly so I can not confirm. I hope the user will be able to do more activities with more confidence now

Please find people who are less fit so I can use those videos for my person so they think the can use it. Omg she plays tennis. I need an older COPD person who had trouble using pursed breathing on their own and this helped them correct their breathing. Slow their breathing, focus, creates back pressure so stale air can come out.

Breath regulation should work for them too. Also make sure to use the inhalers as prescribed. If you are still short of breath then discuss with your doctor incase you need a different set of inhalers. I have videos on inhalers and breathing devices on this channel. Check them out as well. Best wishes!

I have COPD and asthma. I am on a steroid based inhaler. I have no problems falling asleep. I am a light sleeper. I wake up to go to the toilet and then cannot get back to sleep. My mind is racing but my body is asleep. I can lay awake for over an hour. It's horrible. I believe this is caused by the steroids I am taking. I am sure a cannot be the only one I have brought this to the attention of my Doctor at the Respiratory Clinic. But she showed little interest

I think if you over do it, it might raise the co2 level too much. Breathing out is very hard for COPD patients .

My pep buddy was hand delivered to me here in China today. A friend brought it. "Lost" the first order in Shanghai customs. I expected step by step instructions to be included in the order. Not so. So which is correctt inhale through the device or through the nose. The woman says she has discovered "many different ways to use the device". but those ways are not included in the instructions. Through my own research I believe this will be a very useful device and for that I thank you, but I gotta tel you the total absence of instruction is very disappointing. One would think you would share your research with the customers.

Thank you for your order. The package should have an instruction card in it. Here is a video where Dr Zafar (PEP buddy co-inventor and co-founder) explains how to use PEP Buddy. I use the inside tube from a syringe, but a straw would probably work the same. Basically, the resistance caused by restricting the amount you can breathe out, prevents the airways from collapsing so quickly. I’m sure this gadget would work.

When I started experiencing more severe breathlessness I would panic and it would get worse and worse. After a very long time I realized I was hyperventilating from the panic, and pursed lip breathing will get me back into a regular breathing pattern quite quickly. I had to figure out everything on my own. I thought my lungs were shutting down. I had never seen anybody hyperventilate and never considered it a possibility. Was not told anything by Doctors, just given medication. These videos have prob been lifesaving. Certainly sanity saving. Using the diaphragm to breathe and nose breathing is very important too. If its hard to breathe through nose, press one nostril shut and do it that way as many breaths as possible.

This was very good. I don’t smoke, never have, and was diagnosed with stage 3 COPD…. The reg dr I had before this, always just gave me Prednisone & antibiotic maybe twice a month for 2 years. I had a constant horrible cough. That dr never had my lungs looked at or tested. So the diagnosis was a Shock to me, big shock. Now after this long, I’m Angry! I’m angry she missed it. I’m on oxygen and carry mobile oxy. Turns out I had asthma for years, all the pulmonologist told me, first & last visit? Was “well you don’t have asthma, you have COPD.” I didn’t even know what that stood for. She said nothing more. See, being this far along w it, I feel like I will die with it as w this, I have kidney disease & a heart valve leak. I didn’t know ANY of this til all the tests were done 3 years ago. I Am angry it’s me. My son had very bad asthma from age 1 to 25 I think. Nebulizer 3x a day; poor little kid. Will He too possibly get copd? I live alone, my husband passed 20 yrs ago. So I’m sad and angry. Sorry. Thx for listening.
