I am a well educated woman, street wise and usually know when I'm being lied to...except this time. Today I just broke off with a romance scammer after 5 months of online dating. It was very hard to do. I really liked him. He lived in another state. I met him on a dating site, he said he was a widower with a young son. Which I believe is true. I have not been on any dating site in years, never been scammed before now. We communicated every day for 5 months. We called each other, honey this, sweetheart that, my love.....Then, 4 months ago, he said he had to go overseas to work / building project as a contractor. Was only supposed to be 3 weeks away and when he got back we would meet. During those 4 months...he said he lost his cell phone, his wallet was stolen, had to freeze his bank accounts, cancel credit cards, had bad internet connection, had to borrow phone to call me and had to raise money to replace broken equipment. And if he didn't finish his work his contract would be cancelled. Had me email his investment firm to withdraw funds for new equipment only couldn't, upfront fees were too high. AND sending emails to his son that he was ok. I was supportive and loving thru all of this and was stressed out...BUT my gut instincts was telling me he was a liar. Finally two days ago, he said he exhausted all his options and would I lend him money. I was dreading this...and told myself he would never ask, but he did. I said no I do not have money to lend him. He then asked again & appealed to me AS HIS WOMAN would I help him. I was upset that I was played and told him so... he got angry, called me a horrible person & stingy. I told him I only wished him the best, and hope he finds peace in his life. I meant it. I write this in tears and feeling foolish...learned my lesson.

I want to tell anyone who has been through this ordeal, you've refused to give them money, suddenly they then start gas-lighting you angrily after all the loving words they've spoken, and then they drop you... it will hurt like hell for about a week - you must tell yourself each day for that week, "it wasn't real. It was a lie. it was hard but I am well rid of this person." The second week it will start to hurt less because you've affirmed so many times now the truth about the scammer. At the end of the 2nd week, you'll be OK again. Maybe your mind will drift towards him from time to time, but that's OK, you just repeat "it wasn't real.
