Unfortunately, we had no luck with Acres in pots. The didn’t survive frost in winter
@GreenIslandGardensVideosКүн бұрын
It would have been the fact that they got too wet in winter rather than the frost, as they are fully hardy. It also may have been in too big a pot for the size of the rootball. Check out our video on growing acers if you'd like to give them another try 💚 kzbin.info/www/bejne/nnrQYqSfarN9p7s

They were quite rootbound and although i did everything you’re supposed to do - they still are not coming into leaf. They look dead but hen i scratch the trunk, it’s green. Do you think it’s just asking a long time to establish? (It is quite wet here). Thanks

Hi l live in the UK and have 2 potted Nandina Firepower shrubs about 7/8 yrs old. This summer 70% of the leaves turned brown and crispy and dropped off (there are some healthy green/red left) l must admit l haven’t cared for the shrubs that much as they’ve always thrived on little attention, until now that is! The compost in the pots has dropped a lot (exposing some roots) and I’m not sure what to do. I’m thinking of lifting the plants out and repotting with some fresh acidic soil.. and possibly cutting them right down.. but not sure. I would be most grateful for any advice you could offer as l don’t want to lose these beautiful shrubs. Thank you.
@GreenIslandGardensVideos2 ай бұрын
Hi there! It is definitely a good idea to take out and repot, possibly into larger pots. If they have been in there for 7-8 years, they could do with an annual feed with multi-purpose or ericaceous feed in the spring. I wouldn't recommend cutting them down completely, but you could certainly cut some branches back to promote new growth. The brown leaves may have been caused by our particularly wet winter, getting too wet in the pot. Hope this helps 💚

@@GreenIslandGardensVideos Always. Nice to listen to experts. Btw.: Maybe one direct question: I would really like to have an Acer 'Bloodgood'. It would be an a clay slope, ~ 45°, but I would make a flat area for it, around 1 m x 1 m. The Clay is quite alkaline; pH 8-9. Slope: West-facing. Should I try it? - I have watched your video about Acers a few times, and I have come to the conclusion I should try it. Should I?
@GreenIslandGardensVideos4 ай бұрын
I'm afraid it really doesn't like clay, so wouldn't advise planting in this situation. Where do you live? I recommend looking around and seeing if any houses in your area are growing acers. If they are it may be worth giving it a go but my gut instinct says no given the clay as they need a lot of water and clay will bake hard in summer and not provide enough moisture. In winter it will sit waterlogged, and these are two things acers don't like. They will happily grow in a pot though!

The problem with climber vines whether it's Boston ivy or anything else can rot out wood draw bugs & mice even termites, I planted morning glories years ago on a trelas against the house the vines had worked their way under the eaves & roofing that went into the attic so I removed the entire trelas & grow them now on a chain link fence 130' long & are yearly growing in southern California.

Greetings from Ireland, Great video about salvias, We have two amistad and two love and wishes all in pots. Our flower garden is in the front of the house and there's a glasshouse and a no dig veg bed out the back. I keep the salvia's in an unheated glasshouse over winter and then in early May I hide the pots up against the front wall to give passers by the illusion that they are growing in the ground. I use slug traps filled with a homemade bait to keep them under control.

Paulownias are not invasive here in the UK. Part of the joy of gardening is being able to use plants from all around the world. Botanical gardens have an important educational role for students/people who cannot afford the time or money to see every plant growing in its native country.

In the almost 30 years that this plant has been here at the gardens we have never had a problem handling it with bare hands. A few people do find that they will get a rash like a burn from this plant in the sunshine, so the precaution of wearing gloves and covering your skin while handling the plant is recommended. I hope that doesn't put you off growing this beauty, but do take care and wear gloves if you are concerned 💚
