On vintage bikes, dust caps are made of irreplacium. Therefore, I try to clean out the grease and regrease WITHOUT removing the dust caps. Something like 1% or even 0.1% of the time, the dust caps will resist removal and get deformed (or get loose from too many reinstallations, eventually), so it's best to leave them in place with vintage bikes ...

The Pinarello should be a nice bike when done - even prettier with polished alloy stuff...but it's getting so hard-to-find these daze and it'll ride just as well with the black stuff. Meanwhile, I checked on the proper way to pronounce UNICANITOR vs what Rich Gangl said. It's OOOHNEEE-CAHNNY-TOAR, not YOU-NEE-CAN-NIGHTER.

I'll say gwer-chi-yot-ti. It's an undoubted legend. Because I'll have to take people's word on it. I've never heard of them. But then I've never even heard of Benotto, until I picked up a Mexican mixte for $50 in the thrift store. It still has the original Suntour gruppo, in Italian specs. Pulling the cotters was a nightmare.| I had trouble finding the right bike. If the Bianchi works out I'm fitting it out with racks and fenders for all weather riding. I pretend like I'm taking up randonneuring, but I'm really just a poser. On the Colnago: Apologies if someone already said this, but Più means More. They're basically calling it a Master Plus. No explanation for why they didn't say 'Maestro'. Maybe giving bikes names in English was more stylish at the time.

Some of the old steel frames were incredible. I have a modern bike based on the Centaur Featherweight, a tough twenty-eight pound bike made before the First World War. Except Azor made it with extra sturdy tubing that allows them to make a step-through as stiff as a diamond frame. So it weighs sixty pounds. I love it. The ride is incredible. But Lord, is it heavy. So when I decided to try road bikes on a budget I went on Facebook Marketplace and picked up a 1976 Schwinn Super LeTour 12.2. Much better, but 21". Once I had tires on it and tried it I knew I couldn't give road bikes a fair test on something too small. I'm going to sell it. I just dropped $125 on an eighteen speed Bianchi Randonneur. At 58cm it should be my size, but the tubes need to be replaced before it will hold air. I have high hopes. Being old, I plan to enjoy the bottom gears on hills.

I agree in principle, with caveats. I found a Super LeTour garage queen, with apparently all the original components. Beautiful condition. Also too small, so I'll be reselling it now that I've tried it and found it to hard to ride. I wouldn't change anything on that one. I just dropped $125 on an 18 speed Bianchi Randonneur. Needs tubes, but the Kenda tires are new. I'll probably swap them out for Schwalbes later, and it has enough miles I won't mind buying a new freewheel, especially if I can find a wider range cluster. Although the road triple probably gives it plenty of range. But I'm keeping the down tubes. I don't race so the newer brifters don't give enough advantage to justify the outrageous cost. Friction shifters are never out of adjustment.

Trigger warning: I’m mostly just yanking the chains of the Campagnolo aficionados out there, but . . . I’ve been road riding since the late-70s and have ridden many bikes over the years. I’ve owned two Campy equipped bikes - one with Nuovo Record and one with Chorus 9-speed. I’ve never understood the fascination with Campy parts. My Campagnolo bikes were OK but they can’t compare to my Dura Ace bikes. Dura Ace shifts better, weighs less, last just as long, and is better looking. Well, I guess “better looking” might be subjective, but the “better shifting” is indisputable. I have DA7700 on my 1995 (California) Masi Volumetrica and DA7400 on my 1983 Gitane Super Corsa. They look and shift great with KMC gold chains. Gotta have the golden chains!
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage4 күн бұрын
I'd agree on the early campy assessment. However for me it's style and durability. I love the look and finish. Yes Dura Ace performed better. The 7400 group destroyed Campagnolo and they never fully recovered. When it comes to vintage. Some would ask why I dont put better parts for better performance. My answer is simple. If I buy a 57 Chevy. I don't care how fast it is. I dont care how well the brakes work. I'm not going to change it from stock. If I want better total performance I'll ride my Moots with full Ultegra. Thanks for watching!

@@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarage You are absolutely right. I still have the Simplex, Stronglight, and Modolo parts for my Gitane. When I’m too old to ride hard (in a few short years, I fear) I’ll be putting those back on the Gitane to get it back to OEM specs. At some point, nostalgia needs to win out over efficiency. I maintain them pretty well but folks gotta understand and admit, that’s some d.u.r.a.b.i.l.i.t.y. with 9-so stuff that prolly just ain’t available with 11,12,13 cogs! Totally love my 9sp Record though by building a bike with 10sp Chorus the comparison let me know the 9sp shifting was gettin a lil tired. Rebuild is now coming courtesy of a buddy who knows that process well. Also, I am (like John) in flat as a damn pancake Illinois so what the heck difference would another cog or two make to me? Am I the only one thinking, why doesn't Campy bring back its polished, shiny parts for the retro and randonneur market? Campy's market share is ultra-low; almost no one is buying, neither OEM nor aftermarket, but the needs from retro and randonneur are real. Companies like Velo Orange and Rene Herse just can't wait for Campy to do this, both developing their own silver polished retro-looking parts. I really can't get the idea why go black for the mid and lower-end groupoes. If they want to use black to create the similar look as the carbon high level ones, campy has definitely made it wrong. Everyone can tell the difference between the carbon and the black plastic. I'm just saying that Campy just needs to bring back its bullet-prove 9-speed 90s classic for the retro market; its sales performance must improve.

9sp bulletproof? Absolutely. I am just getting ready to have my 9sp Record Ergo levers rebuilt for the first time in 30,000+ miles And I know I’m going to open myself to absolute flaming but truth is I have NEVER replaced the original 9sp chain and cassette. I do kerosene and ultrasonic clean them about twice a year but hey, if it ain’t broke, don’t replace it!. What alerted me to the “tired” shifting was getting on another bile with 10sp Chorus. Like “Woaaah! That’s crisp!!!”

hmmm.... the always controversial neo-retro build! It's nice to fit out a vintage frame with the best that tech has to offer, but the aesthetics of the new parts can be unsettling. Black parts? With a red frame, that's not a bad color combination. Going full black is probably better than mixing silver and black parts. Honestly, with disc brakes dominating the market, the ability to do a neo-retro build may be disappearing. Finding new rim brakes and levers may be getting more difficult. As for the review of bike reviews of the past.. I didn't recognize the two-tone green bike that we got a brief look at. Looks interesting, though!

I think Velo Orange, Rivendale and Soma will try to continue to support rim brakes. But yeah - the move to disc brakes and electronic groupsets really have upended this. I mean, technology for up until say, 2010, was merely an update to existing designs.....and there was a feeling that a bike from 1965 or 2005 were not really that much different.

Interesting build idea, will be fun to watch. Two things I miss when I ride one of my full vintage bikes. Wide rims with 28mm or bigger tires, and the better ergo of 11 speed or newer hoods on a compact bar. The biggest contributors to fit/comfort that my "modern" bikes have over vintage. I've been kicking around doing something similar, the limiter being frame clearance.
