The 1980s were a magical time for cyclists. I bought a Mercian frame in Boulder and fitted it with Shimano parts, but always pined for a De Rosa with a Campy Record group. Recently, I bought my dream bike, a tri-color (red, white, green) De Rosa with Mavic Rims, all Campy, circa 1985! It rides like a dream! Fun seeing all these old bikes, and know people still enjoy them.

I love coming to John’s channel and feeling like I am part of a community of like-minded bike geeks. Unfortunately, I still can’t afford most of this stuff…when I was 15 years old, this was all top-of-the-line (hence unaffordable) and now as “vintage and collectible” I still can’t afford it!

Hey, thanks for video walk through time. I used to own a 1986 De Rosa, Super Record with Mavic GL330's. I was a roadie back in the 1980's and 90's in SoCal. We would see John Howard on Torrey Pines hill along the Coast Hwy; along with Tinley, Nelson Vails, and Scott. At 71, I'm still riding, but on 29er x 2.35" mostly off road. I remember exactly how a sweet steel frame with tubulars feels descending through curves. Great video, thanks! ☮

Wonderful to see Seth's shop in Golden! As a former patron of Micheal's Cyclery, it's good to hear how many people it has influenced. The peek at the modern Vecchio's was fun too. I was able to stop in at the old shop twenty years ago and it was like visiting a shrine... albeit one with bike mechanics sitting in it. 😄

Must be 20+ years ago now but I went into a shop in Santa Barbara, CA that was chock-full of NOS Campagnolo. Not only groupsets and components but replacement parts, all in original packaging along with NOS vintage bike frames, clothing, etc. I think the proprietor was from Belgium. I lost track of the place (can't even remember the name anymore) and wonder where all that stuff ended up? Anyone know?

I used to ride new road bikes all the time. About a decade. Actually was a sponsored mountain bike rider at one time. After a long time I grew to fall in love with road cycling again and haven't raced in decades. But I still ride fast. My current bike is a Campy/Mavic/Chicago Schwinn. Paid $150. From a charity used bike shop in the City. I do my own work on it. It's one of my favorites. The quality of the bike is impressive. It's lasted over 40 years and is fast and one of the best handling bicycles I have ever owned. Back in the day. I was at the shop one day and the owner said "take out the new titanium" had never seen one before. Never had heard of a titanium frame before. I noticed zero frame flex and no vibration and incredible speed, back then it was worth $10,000. Retail . And they had only one in stock. I couldn't afford it. But someone else could, it was quickly sold. It was the most impressive bike I had ever riden. The shop in Golden is amazing. I watched the video twice because it was so cool.

He moved to the UK to race I quit racing and started surfing early 70's. He builds frames in Grants Pass Or. I haven't started on that frame yet it's hanging in the garage with a few other frames. thanks for sharing all these great bike shops and beautiful bikes.

That was a great tour John...think I would have been at both those shops all day. There's a shop here in Long Beach with that same esthetic and I'm glad for places like this that cater to the friction shift crowd. Early SRecord seatposts also had alloy attachment hardware as opposed to steel. John Howard wasn't in the first RAAM nor did he win the Great American Bike Race though he is quite the hammerhead in anybodies book. It was an early Ironman he won. That AD was a treat to see...I own a red Ultima team bike that belonged to one if our Olympic cyclists for the boycotted Moscow games.

I guess I have always loved racing bikes since being a kid building my own bikes. It was an interesting time in the late 80s living in America (Indianapolis) and working on many of the new bike parts at Zipp and getting to make the tooling there as a patternmaker. That time, I think, was the golden time of transition and trying new things. Seeing videos of so many vintage bikes and cool places is good thing. The next step in my journey must be building some frames after doing wheels spoked or carbon disc variety's. Some frame builders would make a good video.

Awesome video and road trip. Thanks for posting. I would like to point out a correction: In the video, at around 4:45 min. in, you picked up what Seth said was a “Mexico” crankset. Seth is incorrect. You were holding just a stock Record crankset (with drilled non-Campy rings) that someone polished out. Not a “Mexico”. A “Mexico” crankset refers a Record crank that has the bevels on the arm machined so that they are no longer bevels, but round (radiused). And, a lot of the aluminum of the arm around the dust cover machined away and tapered. Sometimes the spider arm’s flutes are machined all the way through. Then, it is polished to a mirror finish. That’s a “Mexico” There were two “Mexico” cranksets there. The OLMO panto’d crankset in the box, on the left of the red Avocet crank you picked up. Also, in the bag behind the incorrect “Mexico” you picked up, is a pantographed PAOLINI “Mexico” crankset. You thought it was a Pogliaghi. Freeze it around 5:38 min. and you can see the machining done that identifies it as a “Mexico” The camera zoom on the Merckx hanging was too low resolution to positively identify if it had a “Mexico” crank, but it probably did.
@JohnsVintageRoadBikeGarageАй бұрын
