i am a soft and timid person and i do well with the ridgeback i care for. my strategy is to use intellect and praise to achieve desired behavior. pup knows she has a choice to please me and she makes her own decision to do so, no strong will required. i have found that eye contact and making yourself clear goes a long way. expressing praise/disapproval with attitude and vocabulary is enough to keep a rowdy ridgeback in line! ridgebacks are not especially approval oriented but they want things to go smoothly. just make sure you don't overly fuss over small things lest you be sassed. if you are a soft person as well, don't be scared off from ridgebacks for that reason. building a trusting connection to your ridgeback is possible with gentler reassurance as well, and puppy training classes are always a great investment!

These are our dogs back home. Rhodesia consisted of three countries: Zimbabwe, Zambia and Malawi. They are a loved breed back home and very good guard dogs. That is the only breed I have owned throughout my life.

True. As the name implies, the Ridgeback is a Zimbabwean dog. Rhodesia is its former name. It is a very powerful hunting dog. In the 60s, two Ridgebacks killed a leopard in a fight. I would recommend it to anyone as a guard dog. However, if you do not give it enough exercise, it will end up digging under your fence and can end up roaming the streets. Exercise and space are very important.

We have and Australian ridgeback mix and he only gets along with his 10 month old son starboy and even thats ify once in awhile but other male dogs he will try to kill them like a few months ago he attacked his son Romeo and earlier that day they were playing and when he attacked Romeo I tried calling on his tail didn't work and then I looked around and I grabbed back end of a metal shovel and I hit him in the back end of his butt with the shovel because that was the only way I could get him off and then I had to hit him a few times with it and he drew blood and now he wants to kill my dog Romeo which is his son another male dogs he will try to kill also he has also tried to kill female dogs that he has already were friends with but yeah I don't know he won't hurt any other dog on the property that is on the property right now except for my dog and once in a while his son Starboy and Romeo is his son too so I don't get it

My only objection in the phrasing of that last reason. "You must be a leader" = every wannabe aLpHa MaLe looser will want to get one in a desperate bid to combat his pathetic fear of perceived lack of masculinity. Let's face it, we all know that that crowd has absolutely 0 real leadership qualities, and just as much awareness of their lack of skills.

We got out first ridgeback 4 years ago, and I wish I'd seen your video back then. I still would've got my big red girl (90lbs of running machine) but wouldn't have learned the hard way on some of your points. Luckily I dominated her as a puppy several times until I was firmly in the alpha role. My wife did not, and she pays the price now. As of now, I will always have one! I've learned a lot from her and now know what makes her tick. They're amazing dogs! I have a typical female "queen" who is also one of the most loving dogs I've ever known! She does like to chase the deer on our place, but at least she comes back when I call... usually the second time. I keep telling her the deer are her cousins coming to visit, but I don't think she cares. Life is so much more rich with dogs around, and I think ridgebacks make it even more so.

Hello, people! I have a question. I have never owned a dog before and i am single for around 10 years, 20-30y old. I'm 30 now, and pretty much my whole life i have been thinking of getting a dog, because i love to take care...of everything, people, animals, things,etc.. I usually find Joy in all things and even in the worse i find something positive - it is how i co-op with the world idk.. The video mentioned to not get one if you are melting on soft puppy eyes, well, this is me, even a single kind word can melt me and I'm appreciative, but my question is what does a strong leader means? Like, to not give him everything all the time? To raise my tone if they break something or? I have seen friends trying to educate their little puppies and i thought "oh,my why is he,/she yelling at the dog like this? Can't you just with calm tone educate him all manners?" and years later when i see them they have such a strong connection, like they communicate without words even, wow.. This comment is not a joke or anything. I am completely incompetent about dogs, but recently i have started to read more and even stop strangers with dogs on the street just to ask them dog questions and become more educated, all agreed about the leadership skills which again without never being physical mean?

As a 14 year old plenty capable of training a puppy, the middle child always tasked w stuff like this, we got our RR from a farm in IN. Wow the males are beasts. We picked a female, just a gorgeous girl. I spent several months at dog obedience class and I couldn’t get her to do ANYTHING. She got a good amount of exercise as we took her running in the woods and had a lot of room to run the wooded land we lived on, but she was just brutal. When we moved to a “fancy” house my parents gave her to a local farmer, and tho sad, I knew it was the right thing for her. For my money the best family dog is a Lab. Easy. Single? Yorkies, the best dogs on the planet. But please adopt

I had my Colby for 14 yrs. & he followed me everywhere, was very protective & perfectly obedient to me. He ran by the river with me everyday. We went camping, hiking-we did everything together. I miss him so much. I guess I instinctively knew how to train him-with firmness and love. He was devoted to me. Colby was truly the smartest, best dog ever. All I can say is there better be dogs in heaven or it won’t be heaven for me.

Subscribed. Great video, thank you. I have a probably not unique but interesting dog. Her mom is a registered Blue Healer (Australian Cattle Dog) and her dad is a registered Rhodesian Ridgeback. She is about as good at herding anything as I could ever imagine. When I got her at 15 weeks she already had experience herding cattle, sheep, goats, and pigs. She was acquainted with chickens and Guinea Fowl, which I needed. She came with a goat so she’d have a 24 hour exercise and practice partner. I have both her and the goat trained to respond to hand signals in the field. If just hold up one finger she will sit there twitching just waiting for me to send her on a task. She and my other dog both respond to 4 languages, plus sign language, whistling and such. I agree with everything you said about the extreme energy level and need for actually 24 hour outlets for their puppy energy to offgas. I built her and the goat an obstacle course and they have constant access to about 5 acres. She is still young at about 6 months. I’ll be getting a herd of sheep next week which is why I needed her. Yes, if you are not an advanced dog person and have a lot of time (all day outside on a ranch) person who knows how to establish good behavior and create fun distractions early then do not get a ridgeback. I totally agree with every word in this video. I want to breed her back with a purebred Rhodesian Ridgeback and try to make a new type of dog I’ll call the Arizona Cattle Dog.

I rescued a approx 1 yearold Cane Corso from a shelter, the staff didn’t want her to come home with me, because she had been returned 2x for dog aggression, luckily I was friends with a trainer they knew well and they knew I had a lot of experience with mastiffs. She as dog aggressive, took a lot of work with my senior Staffordshire boy to socialize her and get her acclimated to other dogs, they are best friends now. She’s an excellent guard dog, the staffy is her scout and he’s the loud aggressive showing dog (he’s a big baby really) and she’s his quiet muscle who doesn’t leave my side. Between the two of them no one is willing to come near our fence line unless me or my partner are around. My brother had a Rhodesian, she was the fiercest, fastest, strongest, smartest dog I have ever met. She was a Belgian Malinois in her past life. We live in an extreme climate like 115degree plus in summer. My Cane Corso can’t handle it. The Rhodesian, wouldn’t even pant in that heat lol. Rhodies are amazing dogs, my brothers was the best guard dog ever. I made the mistake of walking in to our mother’s house unannounced right after she passed not knowing my brother was there with the dog. Within seconds of entering that dog had her paws on my shoulders and her mouth at my neck, she didn’t attack tho just waited for my brother to notice and recall her. She was a frightening and impressive dog. My Cane Corso isn’t as forwardly aggressive, in fact she’s quite calm and very demure lol. Until she feels I’m in danger, once that happens all bets are off. She’s only reacted badly to people a couple of times, (Instacart and other delivery drivers) she doesn’t have a problem with most of them and I use the services a lot because I had a spinal fusion after a car accident that left me unable to drive afterwards. Don’t know what it was about those drivers she didn’t like but she absolutely didn’t like 2 of them (out of the 3 or so dozens that frequented my home often for months) she’d bark and growl and jump at the fence at them (that she can easily jump) and then come back to me sit next to me and growl at them while looking up at me. I dunno what was wrong with them but I trust her implicitly. Both great guardian dogs. Absolutely majestic animals. Both are great with our families and kids, both have excellent recall, both will constantly follow us off lead w/o any issues in any environment. But it takes a lot of training and strong bonding to their packs. I wouldn’t recommend either w/o extensive experience with large, guardian breeds. They are stubborn AF. But if you have the experience and a lot of time to detonate to training (I do mean like A LOT) they are magnificent animals. Neither like to be w/o thier person. I have spent a lot of time with my Cane Corso and she got very used to having me home while I was recovering from surgery. Now when I’m gone my kids and partner report that she’s not really the same dog when I’m not home. She’s friendly and loving and affectionate with my whole family but I’m 💯her person. She’s my constant shadow. Same with my brother’s Rhodesian. They bond very close with 1 person, even if they are close and affectionate with the rest of family and friends that frequented the home often he was 💯 her person and she did not let him out of her site either. If you are gonna get either of these dogs they require a lot of attention, strong leadership and exhaustive training. But they are the most loyal and fiercest dogs you will ever meet

Our Kirra has been our biggest love and most loyal companion for 13yrs now. She is the best but unfortunately has developed Spinal degeneration over the last year or so. Because of this she is starting to loose control of her back legs. We walk her every day, as much as she is willing, to try and keep her muscle strength up. She has had a very active life and never left our side but with this condition the vet has said that we may have to have her put down, if it degenerates to much and makes her immobilised and in pain. We are dreading this day, if it was to happen. We so wish for her to go naturally and on her own terms. The vet has said that this condition is not uncommon with not only Rhodesian Ridgebacks but also other dogs of similar stature and size. So weight control is of utmost importance with this breed. Anyway, about Ridge backs as a pet. They are very loyal, not difficult to train(treats are your helper here) and not demanding as long as they get their daily excersise. They do like attention (when they want it) but otherwise are not demanding. Our girl is not aggressive at all but this obviously depends how they get raised. Overall I think that Ridgebacks are an excellent family pet as long as you have the time for them. If you make the time for them then they will be the best companion for life. Be aware, they love to run when they are younger so need space to achieve this. We live by the beach so our girl has always had heaps of space to burn off all that energy and then do her favourite past time after. Sleep! 😂 If you are able to commit to all this then Rhodesian Ridgebacks are the dog for you. One word of advice. If you do decide to get one, make sure that you get one from a reputable dealer as ones that come from dog farmers and back yard breeders are prone to hip and elbow dysplasia and Dermoid Sinus. A reputable breeders will normally offer a certificate stating that the dog has been checked for these conditions, back yard breeders won't. Spend the extra money with the reputable breeders as, if your new puppy has any of these terminal conditions, it will have to be euthanased.

I've been privileged to have had Ridgies for 33 years and absolutely adore these dogs. Wonderful family memers who love kids and excellent guard dogs who don't go overboard with their protection. They are indeed couch potatoes but the minute you pick up car keys or leads they rocket into action. They love being with you. Big smoochy dogs who love leaning on you. Take them to the beach or forest and they are in seventh heaven. ❤❤❤
