Ukraine did not exist until 1922; now, anything other than that interpretation is pure nonsense. Scythians were from Persian, Bulgars originated from the Urals, the Mongols came from Mongolia, the Khazaks came from the Khazars, Ottomans came from Asia Minor, and the Rus Vanagarian Vikings came from Sweden and spoke Norse, not Ukraine. The Ukrainian language comes from Eastern Slavic and not Norse! I cannot find references to maps attributed to Ukraine as they were of Polish, Lithuanian, Russian, Hungarian, and Romanian origin. Cossacks came from Tribes speaking the Tukric language. Crimean Tatars came from Central Asia. Never once does he mention the Mongol destruction of Kyiv in 1150. Kyiv was never a Kingdom but part of Poland and Lithuania and then part of the Russian Empire No, Wonder Woman never came from Ukraine, which did not exist until 1922! This Propagandist is trying to create a link between Ukraine and Tolkien’s Lord of the Rings. Western Ukraine was Polish Galicia, Volhynia, Transcarpthia from Hungary, and Berrasarbia was part of Romania. Snyder does a disservice to all Historians. He should get his own Children's TV Show!

❤Thank you, Professor Snyder! I could listen to you every day, & twice on Sunday, if I only had the time. Your lectures & books are always enlightening & I greatly appreciate that. When I listen to historians, they (esp. you) make me want to go back to college to major in American & European history. Thank you, for everything you are doing for our dear friends in 🇺🇦, & our fellow fellow 🇺🇸Americans!

I think Ukrainians refer to Tolkien not because everyone read it, but because Lord of the Rings were broadcasted on TV so so many times.. especially during Christmas, so many people watched it and now using this terminology.

Ward Carroll: Deep Intel About Ukraine's New F-16 Tactics. kzbin.info/www/bejne/nqWmoKCMdrWqq7s Prof. Justin Bronk returns to the channel to talk about how the Ukrainian Air Force is using the F-16s that just arrived in country and how those fighters might affect the course of the war. He also discusses whether the Kursk incursion - where Ukrainian forces have advanced into Russia - is a real tactical strategy or just a stunt designed to convince the west to continue funding the war.

What utter nonsense from this guy, “Oldest city in the world.” Ukraine never existed in prehistoric times, so all roads to Europe do not lead through Ukraine. Snyder is just a pure propagandist, nothing more, just like Nikita Khrushchev, who also had a preoccupation with Ukraine. What does The Lord of the Rings have to do with History as it is just a made-up story, nothing more? Snyder is just spinning stories into History, just like Homer's fables, which I must state are just stories. This guy can spin a story out of nothing, but history is about facts, not stories! He will next say that Helen of Troy came from Ukraine, and now Wonder Woman came from Ukraine. This guy has no credibility and is paid by Ukraine to propagate this nonsense.

@@ericvv57 History is about facts, not " Word Salad” blending myth and stories! Ukraine was never a nation until 1918; before that, it was the Polish Lithuanian Commonwealth and then part of the Russian Empire. The Mongols destroyed the Swedish Varanagan city of Kyiv in the 1200s. The Cossacks were not Ukrainian, nor were the Crimean Tatars! Ukraine pays Snyder to rewrite its history! Could you show me a map of Ukraine before 1918? Polish East Galicia and Volhynia were added to the Ukrainian SSR in 1941. Hungarian Transcarpathian was added to the Ukrainian SSR after the War 1939-1945. Romanian Berrassarbia, next to Odessa, was added in 1945. Snyder ignores historical facts and uses the word “Ukrainian” in every sentence: “Ukrainian Wonder Woman,” “Ukrainian Helene of Troy.” “Ukrainian Cossacks” Snyder’s credibility as a Historian is shot, and he only fools you!

It is so surprising to hear that a famous American professor didn't know about Indo-European languages until recently... I learned about it when I was still at (Ukrainian) school... The same was with the Amazons; they are mentioned in Herodotus's Histories, Book IV: Melpomene, along with Sarmatian women who couldn't marry before they had killed their first (male) enemy.

I call conflict of interest because this time around his talk distinctively feels like a weaponizing of culture. Don't write poetry in the trenches. Don't romanticize. Keep your mind and view clear in the here and now.

so the take away form Lord of the Ring for the war in Ukraine is that if Frodo had had one of the magic eagles earlier the whole story would have been over quickly. No walking around and fighting all the Orcs just fly with the eagle to the Volcano and drop the ring, end of Sauron in his bunker. Airpower matters

41:14 respect to Professor Timothy Snyder here for bringing in the mythos of *_Wonder Woman_* . Her endurance as a heroic character and a pop culture icon is a bit amazing - when viewing her true "Golden Age" (of comic books) origin. *_WW_* is indeed a "radical" characterization of a truly "modern woman" of any era. "...with all the strength of _Superman_ plus all the allure of a 'good' and beautiful woman", William Moulton Marston, his wife Elizabeth Marston, and their "life partner" Olive Byrne brought forward a new type of "super heroine". The Marston's were psychologists and were seeking a way to show the power of "love" as a force for good in the world, and as a "strength" of women (though his work would also lead to the "lie detector" device, oddly). I sincerely encourage anyone that found this part of Prof Snyder's lecture of interest to at minimum read the Wikipedia articles on *_Wonder Woman_* and the Marstons, it will be worth the time. 😊
