Memories of screaming valenta engines leaving Reading station waiting on my train to Penzance. At times on full chat, it was deafening

Some great memories, something about the smells the noise and occasional curled sandwich from travellers (un)fare that’s as compelling now as it was then.

Used to love a trip from Cheltenham to Temple Meads for a day at the station in the late 80’s. Then take the holiday maker back with double headed 31’s. Great days sadly missed

I was on this magnificent journey, from Reading. Fantastic memories. I recall that intercity overtaking us between Birmingham and Stafford. I was the guy right at the back, waving. Many thanks for doing this video. I'll never forget the experience. There was something about these machines.

Wow!! Thanks for sharing, a real piece of history. An old acquaintance of mine the station manager, appears in a bowler hat at 32 seconds, a blast from my past. The wonderful Karen Keating too, may she rest in peace.

Interesting you featured 47701 and 47708 here. I have both these locos, 47701 in NSE as shown in the video, 47708 in her Scotrail guise, with the name "Waverley", and also still doing push pull work. By coincidence, an item in the rolling stock newsreel of the January 1991 edition of Motive Power Monthly, under class 47, reads "Transferred to Old Oak Common that day, 47701 and 47708 were seen passing through Carlisle, light engine, at 01:50 on 31st October 1990, with nameplates removed". Basically, 47701 and 47708 were moved from Eastfield to Old Oak Common at the exact same time.

Great video, but some dodgy practices in train movements, worst was on 11:12 door flew open on a DMU , driving from trailing cabs . I did over 40 years in the industry. A few rules broken here. One guy at Didcot got sacked for less than what happened within the station here. The area manager would be right in the shit at Exeter allowing these transgressions

Class 47s were stopped being used on the Exeter to London Waterloo line via Honiton, Yeovil Junction, Gillingham Dorset, Salisbury, Andover, Basingstoke, Woking and Clapham Junction in May 1993. Replaced by class 158s and 159s in 1993 for nearly 30 years.

I had just joined the navy then and was based in Plymouth having left the family home up north. I remember there was a 47 hauled service that ran direct to Liverpool Lime Street on a Friday afternoon. Travelling north on a weekend, to my everlasting regret, I would avoid the 47 in favour of an HST with more comfy mk3 coaches. 47's were so ubiquitous back then that I mistakenly thought they'd be around forever. If only I'd known they were in their twilight and would all be gone barely a decade later... I would have made the most of it.
