Realisticly it never really recovered from the 'cod wars' and then the misguided EEC fishing policy of '73. The docks practically died in the '80's and finally the ice factory closed in '90. Brexit threw some false hope of rejuvenation but it was just lies. The town has struggled ever since with it's industry and so it's identity. Still some great people and community but the place has been failed and left behind by lack of investment and political ineptitude.

@@wiggyhawkins Very, very interesting. I don’t know if a i’ve researched effectively but information like this seems like it’s… a bit hard to come by, not sure why. You see, I’m writing a story starting around 2003 (not in Grimsby, but York) with one of the main folks involved being born n raised in Grimsby from about 1995-2000. The character was born in ‘82, an older brother in ‘76. Really interesting information, and just wanting to get a better grasp on time period since I’ll need AND it’s just something very fascinating to me. also just something to learn about the Midlands history + dynamic in general. There i’ll be many, many more characters from different parts of England, UK and even the world since it takes place at a uni. I’m not from England, so the culture and how it’s shaped the people, the class struggle involving the North n South and their divide in something I wanna get down to a T. And something just good to know. This is a very interesting look back in time and very valuable piece of history.

@@dizzydownthegirl Interesting. I'm sure there are others with greater knowledge of the intricacies of the towns fishing history than me,some you may find on many of the Facebook Grimsby History pages should you need more info,lots of stories of the town on there. If I would put one thing to a character from this area and that period it would be a feeling of betrayal of political promises that this town has suffered from all sides. There is a somewhat sad left behind feeling that permeates here,a 'what could of been' blowing in the wind. Good luck with your story.

Gordon Grimley was a tubby specky little oik...Agutless wonder & up himself because he thought he posessed a superior intellect.. Whereas in truth he was just another geek with no charisma at all. Dynamo Digby was ten times the geezer he ever was... The way Grimley was always trying to manipulate Geraldine into liking hi.. And then to at thr the end when he finally does wear her down and win her over it turns out they were related anyway... The Grimley CURSE...

For some reason, since watching this final episode, it keeps me thinking about Darren's situation.. Is he okay after seeing his mother's affair?? Even in the pilot episode, he also finds out about his mother's affair with Mr. Titley.. No one around cares about him, his mother has decided to leave Mr. Grimley, Gordon is busy with Geraldine (who in reality they are cousins) and his father only believed that Lisa was the only child of his own.. Darren's age is still school age, if he is left alone, maybe he will fall into negative things, such as drugs or other criminal acts (especially since he is a genius, he can do anything).. or he will experience mental disorders (stress).. Seeing him cry, makes me hurt.. Poor Darren 😢💔 (sorry my english so bad)

I hate Gordon's childishness.. Especially when he was angry when he was defeated by Darren.. Like when Darren was declared a genius student, Gordon felt it was unfair to him.. and when Darren's poem is declared victorious, he is angry at his judgement.. but when Darren chose not to go, Gordon took his place, he even took his poetry.. Really annoying 😤 Poor Darren 🥺💔 (sorry my english so bad)

I’m not. He was an unrepentant rake who wouldn’t grow up and stop bullying his students. If he existed in the 90’s or later and treated his students exactly how he treats them on the show, the school would’ve fired/sacked him, and he’d never be allowed to teach Phys Ed ever again!

I watched this at my Dad's house after he and my Mam had split up when I was 7, I took that break-up badly and was a huffy kid. I remember he let me stay up to watch this on Saturday Live and genuinely for a 7 year old kid this was the funniest thing I'd ever seen and started my love for Rik and Ade right there.

all the route brought back so many memories of my home town,, it was sad to see freeman street so desolate it used to be always full of people especially market days. saw the townhall where my wedding reception was held. saw how far i used to walk to my mates for a night out ,(strange didnt seem so far then ha) i would love to go back to grimsby how it was in the 70s we had such wonderful times great people.
