A video tour of Grimsby (UK) filmed on a sunny Sunday afternoon on July 10th 1994.
This is another classic trip down memory lane on a par with the 'Grimsby Town Centre & Grange estate 1987' video. Another absolute gem. Take a look and note the things different today from the summer of '94. Enjoy!

all the route brought back so many memories of my home town,, it was sad to see freeman street so desolate it used to be always full of people especially market days. saw the townhall where my wedding reception was held. saw how far i used to walk to my mates for a night out ,(strange didnt seem so far then ha) i would love to go back to grimsby how it was in the 70s we had such wonderful times great people.

Filmed on my 14th birthday. I forget where I was that year but could well have been staying with my grandparents in Grimsby. Haven’t been up there for ages now.

I’m guessing Grimsby was still doing well in the 90s. When did it start to go bad?

Realisticly it never really recovered from the 'cod wars' and then the misguided EEC fishing policy of '73. The docks practically died in the '80's and finally the ice factory closed in '90. Brexit threw some false hope of rejuvenation but it was just lies. The town has struggled ever since with it's industry and so it's identity. Still some great people and community but the place has been failed and left behind by lack of investment and political ineptitude.

@@wiggyhawkins Very, very interesting. I don’t know if a i’ve researched effectively but information like this seems like it’s… a bit hard to come by, not sure why. You see, I’m writing a story starting around 2003 (not in Grimsby, but York) with one of the main folks involved being born n raised in Grimsby from about 1995-2000. The character was born in ‘82, an older brother in ‘76. Really interesting information, and just wanting to get a better grasp on time period since I’ll need AND it’s just something very fascinating to me. also just something to learn about the Midlands history + dynamic in general. There i’ll be many, many more characters from different parts of England, UK and even the world since it takes place at a uni. I’m not from England, so the culture and how it’s shaped the people, the class struggle involving the North n South and their divide in something I wanna get down to a T. And something just good to know. This is a very interesting look back in time and very valuable piece of history.

I'm sure there are others with greater knowledge of the intricacies of the towns fishing history than me,some you may find on many of the Facebook Grimsby History pages should you need more info,lots of stories of the town on there. If I would put one thing to a character from this area and that period it would be a feeling of betrayal of political promises that this town has suffered from all sides. There is a somewhat sad left behind feeling that permeates here,a 'what could of been' blowing in the wind. Good luck with your story.

sad to see , at least 50% of what I remember of gy has gone . the docks are unrecognizable now . shame on gy council for what they have done .

Why? Its a stinkfest town anyway. You cant walk to the shops without stepping over glass, rubbish and smelling someone's weed grow nearby.
