Newbie question -- what's the right proportion of dumpable vs fixed/non-dumpable weight? For example, let's say I need 8kg total weight and per your video have 2x 1kg dumpable weight on my BCD at the waist and then 6kg fixed to my BCD/tank ... will that be enough to get sufficient positive buoyancy if I do need to dump the (dumpable) weights?
@AndytheNorthernDiver3 күн бұрын
Great question mate, not an easy answer though. I have no dumpable weights, but I can dump stuff from my pockets and torch etc. I dive with a backplate, wing and harness so need nothing in a wet suit and then an integrated weight in a Drysuit. In a bcd with pull out weight pockets I’d put no more than 1kg in each. That way if you loose one (which happens a lot) the result won’t be that drastic, and if early enough you can just fill your pockets with rocks until you recover the lost weight. It’s all personal preference really, finding your own way with practice and experience. I’ve seen people with several kilos in the dump pockets, imagine loosing that, you’d be like a tomahawk missile to the moon 🤦🏼♂️

Hi Andy, great video, very informative content - thank you! What do you think about a 150cm hose for the primary regulator instead of the usual 210cm? My reasoning is that I do not do any cave diving, just recreational. I do feel that the usual set-up is not enough for comfort, but 210cm is too much. Also, I dive in lakes and sometimes the visibility is less than a metre! This means I wouldn't even see my buddy at the end of the 210cm hose... Do you think 150cm is ok? I would really appreciate your view on this. :) Thanks and happy diving!
@AndytheNorthernDiverАй бұрын
210cm works perfectly for this setup, I too am not a cave diver but do dive in wrecks where there are restrictions. There’s a fair argument that says two short hoses are enough (in side mount) as you’d hand off your spare cylinder to your buddy and end the dive. But this is how I like my configuration and regardless of my cylinder configuration, the hoses are always the same so it helps both me and my buddy to know where everything is on every dive. Her kit is also configured the same. But how you and anyone else configured there kit is up to them. How did you come up with 150cm? Hope that helps
@tanjadupuis6629Ай бұрын
Thanks so much for the quick reply 😊 I came up with 150cm as I simply cannot seem to find a 180cm hose! 180cm would probably be better as I am not tall and it would have resulted in a nice streamline configuation. @@AndytheNorthernDiver
@tanjadupuis6629Ай бұрын
So what I had in mind would be 150cm for my primary regulator which is what I would hand over to my buddy, and the secondary regulator on a bungee around my neck, just as you have. I can still tuck the primary 150cm hose under my arm and around my neck, but there is no looping in my belt or under the cannister.
@AndytheNorthernDiverАй бұрын
@@tanjadupuis6629 I’m 165cm tall if that helps but looped properly under my torch and round my head, it’s still slick, if a little long you can always tuck it in your waist belt

Strongly advise you not to bother with this product or company. after spending so much money on this thing, including purchasing an extra battery the left motor broke and now I’ve been told because it’s an old model. I have to buy a left and right motor. How about customer service have a few old motors left and if not, you should at least be offering your old customers, two new motors for the price of one.

Thank you, thank you, thank you!! I needed to trim mine because the struggle to pull it over my head was REAL!! But finding a demo on where-to & why was hard to find. I cut about 1 1/2” around the neck of my everflex and it slips over my head with complete ease now, as it should. That longer length band around my neck wasn’t necessary since I mainly dive in warm waters of the Gulf of Mexico. I was scared to mess it up by cutting it, but I’m so glad I did!! Thanks for a great demo & info video on hood trims!!

Bit confused, why are you putting the gloves on inside-out with the fluffy bit on the outside? Mine when came fitted have the white fluffy lining on the inside of the glove. Also, what is the best way to trim off excess glove material without damaging the glove system?
@AndytheNorthernDiverАй бұрын
Several reasons, the white stands out more for hand signals with your buddies, the flocked effect gives more grip (for a few dives till it wears off), I just use scissors to trim the excess off. Thanks for watching and reaching out.

When it comes to warm hands, most people forget how the human body works. When your body cools down in cold water, your body will want to keep your core warm and cut off the blood flow to your hands and feet. The most important thing for warm hands and feet is to ensure that your body core remains at the right temperature.

I've got a couple of Apeks spools. You need about 1.5x as much line as your deployment depth. If you're deploying your dSMB from 20 meters, you need 30 meters of line on your spool. This is because the dSMB doesn't shoot up straight when there's a current, and you want it to be able to reach the surface. If you're buying a cheap, overwound 30m spool, keep in mind that you'll likely have to remove 10-15m of line to make the spool usable. That will turn your 30m spool into a 15-20m spool. I have a compact 15m spool for deploying from my safety stop. This is enough for recreational open water. I have a 30m Halo spool for cold water diving, which is good down to 20m. And I have a 60m spool for S&R, jump lines, and deploying from 40m. I carry a maximum of 2 spools on a dive, depending on the situation.

That is a really convoluted way of attaching a dSMB to your spool. Why not just pull the leader through the D-ring or loop on the dSMB, and pull the spool through the leader? Personally, I keep my dSMB and spool separate. I pull the leader of the line through one of the holes in the spool. Attach the bolt snap to the leader, wrap it behind the trigger, and clip it through the gate. Then clip your dSMB onto that same gate. They're securely clipped together. Then, when it's time to deploy: Unclip the dSMB from the boltsnap. Clip the spool to a D-ring. Unfurl the dSMB and hold it with your left hand. Unclip the spool, hold it with your dSMB in your left hand, and remove the bolt snap. Clip the bolt snap back onto the D-ring. Pull the leader out of the hole, and thread it through the dSMB D-ring. Pull the spool through the leader. Inflate the dSMB and let it go. Take the bolt snap off the D-ring, and clip it onto the line. Wind the line back onto the spool using the bolt snap. Clip the line off to the spool with the bolt snap when you reach your stop.

What is the standard short hose length for the alternative necklace regulator for single tank and if any difference for the twin set configuration? Basically with the single tank configuration the hose terminates at the middle base of the divers neck opposed to a twin set terminating behind the divers left shoulder.

I use my drysuit hose to inflate my DSMB. It works a treat and if I can’t get it back on my dry suit for some reason there’s no worry as I’m ascending not descending at the end of the dive. It’s much safer than using your bcd hose cause if something goes wrong & you can’t reattach your bcd hose to the bcd you have no inflation on the surface
@AndytheNorthernDiver7 ай бұрын
Yeah I like that, often I have a bailout or deco cylinder so use the hose off that to make it easier / safer than unattaching a hose
@bloodymarvelous47906 ай бұрын
You know you can manually inflate your BCD, right? There's a special mouthpiece on your power inflator especially for that purpose. During the ascent you only need to let air out of the BCD, so not being able to reattach the LPI hose isn't really an issue.
