As a math major, I agree with you. The problem with math is that it is a theoretical academic field, jobs in real life/industry do not use the highly advanced mathematics you learn. A BS in math is pretty much used for graduate study in math. To become a mathematician, researcher or math professor, you need advanced degrees. An undergrad math degree won’t allow you to get those positions. However, I plan on becoming a high school math teacher, which usually requires just a bachelor’s or master’s depending on where you live. You have to determine what career you want and if math is needed to get there. But for anything data science or programming, major in computer science. Same with any engineering fields. And if you want to be an actuary, know that math does nothing besides provide a foundation. You still have to pass the actuarial exams, which require more knowledge and skills besides math.

UMBC is also friendly to working professionals. It offers quite a few of Masters of professional study majors. I finished a master degree during evening hours when I have a full time job. Courses are really practical to my career.
