I'm neither aircrew or an aircraft engineer. (I have worked in ATC) Would cutting off the main rotor have stopped the aircraft's fuselage rotating around the blades? I once worked alongside a helicopter pilot, and was told it is possible to glide a helicopter down to the ground, from a height similar to this. May They Rest In Peace. 💐
@davidblurton7158 Жыл бұрын
no the blades need to spin,,, or you drop like a stone,, usually these incidents are non survivable,, you drop the nose and hope the airspeed slows the rotation i guess and try and flair before impact but in their situation just avoiding killing anyone else is about all you could do

IMO you tried everything except that which is called for in every RFM I have ever read...namely, dumping collective pitch and gaining airspeed so as to get some degree of anti-rotation control from the vertical fin(s). For the helicopter I fly, that speed is 70 knots. I'm at a loss why you didn't attempt this instead of the unheard of (to me) tactic of applying counter-rotational cyclic. Are you helicopter rated or just a computer/simulation hobbyist? Please reply if you are interested in repeating your experiments and using known and recommended techniques that might be successful.

Thank you for your reply. It is clearly stated that I am not certified at anything, meaning: not a real pilot. However I have put a lot of effort and time, during the recent years, to increase my knowledge regarding these magnificient machines. This quest is ongoing, therefore every constructive bit of information is welcomed and appreciated on this channel. Your comment made me do some additional testing in a simulator with following results. The height from where I was able to transition to autorotation with a significant forward speed (50-60kts) was 350-400ft AGL and above, provided the action was started immediately during the onset of yaw motion, meaning I anticipated failure, while IRL they would be needing extra seconds for analysis and end up spinning substantially even before taking any action. To conclude. Failure height in this video was set to 250-300ft AGL, which is below the height where It was (in a virtual enviroment) still possible to trade height for some airspeed. However I have later found out that the unfortunate G-VSKP was actually higher, at the 430ft RALT, and that might open at least theoretical possibilities, while the grim outcome is already known.

I have a question: when the autopilot is on with SAS/ATT it controls the collective when climbing or descending. How do you switch this off if you need manual control of the collective?
@helichannel84752 жыл бұрын
I prefer to use 3-axis mode only, but there is a COLL button (between AP2 and CPL) you can also press and disconnects collective. You must then move collective axis to synchronize and this is where things can get really messy. I think “force reverse collective” option reduces chances of over torquing a bit. Also switching AP to standby mode (SBY) does the same, methinks, you still gotta sync, though.
@nickmaguire51042 жыл бұрын
@@helichannel8475 I have tried pressing the COLL button but this does not give me back control of the collective. Turning AP off does not also work. I’m using a Logitech 3D pro joystick. Once autopilot takes control of the collective I have no way getting it back. Shame! It’s a nice helicopter but unusable if I can’t land it.
@helichannel84752 жыл бұрын
@@nickmaguire5104 Pressing the button is not enough. You have to move your collective slowly across the range to synchronize.

There are levers (DOORS/CARGO) on the middle console, to the right of your seat. You can also assign joystick axes to "thrust vector" for doors and "flaps" for cargo ramp.

I am totally confused. Mountain to the right, valley to the left, enter IMC. Why not turn left and descend, assuming that your location is similar, or xlimb to a safe altitude and head away from the mountain to a safer area for a let down. Seemed a lot of palarva for nothing.

there should be a way to dump fuel or make it so it doesn't cause an explosion in these situations if it wasn't for the fire and explosion there could well have been survivors
@audify38333 жыл бұрын
Im pretty sure if you dump fuel at that low of an altitude, it doesn’t disintegrate like it does at high altitudes so its a major risk to the city’s infrastructure

@@dragonredsinbad4631 fuel dumping systems aren’t fitted to helicopters for the same reason that a lot of newer aircraft lack the capability, and it has nothing to do with the environment Even if the helicopter did have the capability, I don’t think dumping fuel would have changed the outcome, as the fuel would not be able to drain fast enough
