I went back into medicare calculator and ozempic went up from $47 on AARP to about $235....?? And does it matter to get lower drug costs if the premium plus drug cost is same as wellcare with much higher drug cost but total is about the same as as AARP for total premium+drugs?

I wish I saw this yesterday! I have Wellcare but have more expensive drugs like ozempic and it is about 2k but AARP UHC is less - drugs are about 1935 for Wellcare. AARP is much less for drugs but shows total around 1800 but includes premium of about $80 - I thought it would be better to pick low premium and deductoble since that goes toward OOP but not premium. I hit 0 in I think June for WEllcare but much sooner for AARP...Guess it is too late to change?
@MedicareMindset

Yeah, it seems weird that a much higher premium plan will end up with a lower total plan cost (premiums + drug copays)...but it can happen with Ozempic in the mix. Either of those plans can work for you. It sounds like the total expected costs won't be too much different. Either way, it sounds like you'll enjoy no copays for your covered drugs starting around the summer time! :)

what about star ratings? How can you identify enhanced vs. standard plans?
@MedicareMindset
@MedicareMindset 6 күн бұрын
We don't worry too much about star ratings for stand-alone Part D plans. Consider plans with a 2 star rating or higher. Usually 3.5 is the highest you'll see with Part D plans. Enhanced plans are those with no deductible for sure. And then some other plans might be enhanced too, even if it has a deductible. Another way you can tell is if you hit the Catastrophic phase and have no copays for the rest of the year, despite having total drug copays of clearly less than $2,000.

Very good video! This concerns my 2025 IRMAA. I retired in 2021. Incurred capital gain in 2023 because of sale of business. Should I show them my 1040 for 2022 to verify my lower income? And should I claim Work Stoppage?
@MedicareMindset
@MedicareMindset 7 күн бұрын
Showing them 2022 isn't helpful, as they are looking at 2023 now. So you could only use a 2024 or 2025 income estimate to appeal this. Your 2021 retirement is a little too far in the past, but maybe you could use your 2023 business sales as your "Life Changing Event"...and subsequent income drop in 2024 on step 2 of the form.

Thank you for this detailed information. I have been looking through many sites and videos offering help. Many of them are an overview that misses the intricacies of how this process actually works, so thank you for going through this step-by-step. I have already been on Medicare.gov and have our accounts mostly completed with our medications and pharmacies added. I am working on getting mine figured out, my husband’s, and also my Mom and my mother-in-law. We have quite the variety of scenarios. I wasn’t aware of the links on the lower parts of the webpages that breakdown the costs by pharmacy in detail. And I was struggling to figure out the tier for each medication on each plan. You helped answer so many of my questions. Thank you so much pointing me in the right direction with all of your recommendations and tips. On a separate issue, I have heard/read many people stating that the $2k annual max out of pocket costs only applies to medications that are covered by the plan. Is that also your understanding also? Thank you again so much for your presentation and explanations. I am usually very good at this kind of thing, but I wasn’t finding the specific details that I needed to make informed choices and recommendations to my family.

What makes these people think all these retirees and other older people can do all this stuff ONLINE????? Most older people I know don't have computers, internet and don't understand what and how to do all this stuff. Some don't even have people that can do this either. NOR do they want to share all the info that could lead to MORE problems for them. They sure don't need to have to pay someone to do all this mess either. Getting help on the phone is just as bad. Either you don't have the info "they" want, they don't answer , and they have problems HEARING the people. Where can you get help. If you go to the local Social Security office it's a nightmare. They have the barriers between the workers and customers and you can't hear what they say. BUT EVERYONE waiting in the office CAN HEAR ALL YOUR INFO! The info that can lead to Identity theft. Why make EVERYONE take that chance?? You can't even set up a private meeting with a person like you used to either. That's so sad.

If someone doesn't have a computer or internet, then they obviously aren't watching our KZbin tutorials. Our videos are for someone who does have internet access and is searching for answers on how to properly perform this analysis, or get other answers to Medicare questions. A Social Security office is not going to provide any assistance finding the right Part D drug plan or supplemental plan. They have no clue, nor are they even licensed to provide guidance. And this is why Medicare beneficiaries should work with an independent Medicare insurance agency like ours. There is no cost to work with a licensed insurance agent to find the right Medicare plans. Take care! :)

I hope you may guide me in the right direction. My mom is 69 years old and was born in Honduras. She became a US citizen on Sept. 2024 and I took her to the SSA office to update her citizenship status. There, we learnt that she qualified for Medicare and spousal benefits through her ex husband (they were married for 30 years, he’s a US citizen and has worked in the US for for more than 20 years). Her spousal benefits were approved last month. When can she apply for Medicare part B or are there penalties? She’s never worked in the US and lives with me. She’s has no income besides what SSA started giving her. She only has Medicare part A. Thank you.
@MedicareMindset
@MedicareMindset 13 күн бұрын
Yes, your mom can enroll in Medicare. She can get Part A with no premium by enrolling through her ex-husband's work record. And then she can add Part B as well...BUT...she might be penalized for signing up for Part B late. It depends on what insurance coverage she has had since turning 65. If she's been on an employer health plan through her active work since 65, then she can enroll while on that plan or within 8 months after separating from the employer. But if she is NOT an employer health plan through active work, then she'll need to enroll during the General Enrollment Period for Medicare Part B (Jan 1 - Mar 31). Actually, she can enroll now. Part A can be done anytime, but they will give her a 2/1/25 Part B start date automatically if she's not on an employer plan based on active work. If you want to correspond via email, contact me at [email protected].

I received a large amount from my inherited IRA in 2024, but my income will be significantly low in 2025. When should I appeal, 2025 or 2026? Thanks.
@MedicareMindset
@MedicareMindset 15 күн бұрын
In order to file an IRMAA appeal you need two things to happen: 1.) An allowed life changing event (e.g. Work Stoppage, Work Reduction, Death of Spouse, Divorce)...AND... 2.) A reduction of your adjusted gross income to a lower income range than shown on your tax return 2 years ago. Your high income in 2024 will impact your 2026 Medicare premiums...so it's not really an issue right now. 2025 Medicare premiums are based on your 2023 adjusted gross income. But for 2026, you might be able to appeal...IF the two scenarios above are true. It sounds like you have one of two happening, but I'm not sure if you have an allowed life changing event.

If the employer has 20+ employees, he doesn't need to do anything about Part B yet. He would enroll in the 3 months leading up to the future loss of coverage date. The 8 months beyond separation from the employer is a nice accommodation, but really you want Part B to start right as the employer coverage is ending.

Thanks for reaching out. Those questions really won't matter when signing up at 65, or at a later time. If you're doing this at 65, it's really irrelevant. You're eligible based on age, and prior insurance doesn't even matter. Your Part B will start depending on which month of your 7-month IEP the application is submitted. If you're doing this after 65, the two additional forms (Form 40B and Form L564) that need to be submitted will address all of those important dates. And then the start date will be either 1 month, 2 months, or 3 months in the future. You would mark that down on Form 40B when submitting that form with Form L564 to your local SSA office.

Usually if there is no deductible, that's a giveaway. Also when you see the total expected drug copays for the year...if the month-to-month total shows you at $0 copays eventually in the year, but it your copays are less than $2,000...it's an enhanced plan. The standard plans would show you at $2,000 in drug copays or close to it...again, assuming the drugs you take are expensive. Some people don't come close to $2,000 and could be fine in a standard plan.

Your start date for A&B will be 2/1. Since you're getting Social Security already, you will automatically be enrolled in A&B. Part D drug plans, Medicare Supplement (Medigap) plans, and Medicare Advantage (Part C) plans are done through the various insurance carriers that offer plans in your area. We aren't able to discuss specific plans, so let me answer it this way... If you take a tier 1 or tier 2 generic, a lot of Part D plans won't make you meet the deductible on those. The way you can tell is you'll see a copay probably between $0-5 at a preferred pharmacy, maybe a little more at a standard network pharmacy. Usually the tier 3, 4, 5 drugs will be subject to the deductible first, so they are more expensive initially. Having said that, there are some plans with a deductible that applies to all tiers, so those generics will possibly be higher cost than you would like.

If the drug is on your plan's formulary, then you can confirm the pricing on Medicare.gov. If it's just a generic, then it's likely covered fine. But if it's a brand name drug, you can verify whether it's covered on your plan's formulary and get the pricing. If it's not covered at all, then ask your doctor for an alternative until you can find one that is covered. Additionally, you can ask your plan to provide a a "formulary exception" to see if they will cover the non-covered drug. But they don't have to allow this.

What do you use to record and edit your videos and be able to keep information private? Like if you’d want to illustrate an application on video but need PI to do so, how do you record without it catching the info? Thanks!

Really any video editing software gives you the ability to hide/remove certain things from a video. It's just an editing option. :)

@@MedicareMindset does zoom have that option? I find it better than loom for my audio

@MedicareMindset thanks for another great video! I understand that someone who has already enrolled in Medicare Part A, will need to answer Yes to "Have you previously applied for Medicare, Social Security or (SSI) benefits. My first question is... after answering Yes, are there any additional questions to answer? 2nd question: If single now but divorced ,the person needs to select Yes to "Did you have any prior marriages" Will they then need to answer similar questions to the ones that a person who selects currently married does? Last question/sanity check - for children it looks like stepchildren qualify , correct? Thank you!!

Thanks. Other than "Do you want to apply for Medicare Part B?", I don't believe there are any sub-questions for that one. But there may be. I don't think it's anything too involved. Yes, similar questions. Yes, the application question actually mentions that stepchildren should be included.
