Hi Chris! Great to talk a walk with you along the Yellowstone River! So many lovely rocks! I enjoyed hearing your discussion of the varieties you find. It’s great that this river is still free flowing, and has such a wide range of rock types- you can learn so much in just one area. The flat rocks are really interesting! Amazing how the river sorts the rocks! We see a wide variety of rocks on the beaches around the Puget Sound- I wish I knew the types better. Enjoyed the video, thanks! 👍👍😄 Jen from Washington

Jen, glad you enjoyed it, and followed along on the talk walk! I do a lot of "shorts" on different rock types from the rivers and beaches mostly, (My Daily Rock playlist) that you might enjoy. You mention the rocks over there - that is what caught my eye on your video about the bluffs. The amazing deep history contained in an ancient riverbed or beach gravel is always intriguing to me. And your style - very calm and relaxing. Keep up the good work! Talk a Walk... that sounds good.

@@chrissgraniteparadise2656 Thanks Chris! Great to meet you. I’ll check out your videos explaining the rock types- I’d love to finally know what I’m looking at along the beaches… I’m a bit busy at the moment, but look forward to watching once things settle down in a few weeks! 😄👌 Jen

I grew up on the East Boulder South of Big Timber. We would occasionally find “pudding stone” rocks that we were of various colors. The imbedded stone were much more separated/distinct than the rocks you found.

I have never found puddingstones (or leopard rocks, as I remember them being called) in Rock Creek, but I am assuming you watched my short on those - which are from the Yellowstone. As a kid, I remember visiting someone in the area you are mentioning, and their house was SURROUNDED with huge puddingstones they had collected in the river, which was on their property. I remember my mom's friend was so happy when I pulled another giant one out of the river for her. I am curious what you mean by "separated" - do you mean more space between the phenocrysts?

I dont think thats aventurine. Looks more like hydrogrossular garnet. Any known ophiolitic material in that area?
@chrissgraniteparadise2656
@chrissgraniteparadise2656 Ай бұрын
The reason I say aventurine is that it is full of that greenish mica. But I think I do have some pieces with the garnet you mentioned. A very bright green, correct?

@@chrissgraniteparadise2656 it varies from pine needle greed to electric bright green chromium. Its often mixed with a tea colored translucent idocrase and a white matrix. The serpentine, HGG, idocrase, nephrite, listwanite, diopside, and even jadeite are all subduction zone metamorphics. they are often mixed together in the same rock.

It's beautiful. Wow! interesting that the orange didn't do well on snow/cold weather.
@chrissgraniteparadise2656
@chrissgraniteparadise2656 Ай бұрын
Hello Veronica, I think it really depends on the porosity and mineral content of the stone. Travertine, for example, is porous, and yet endures the frost ok. And some of the darker canteras also survive. But the orange is really softer and is crumbling every winter into sand. Remember, we have 40 C above zero in summer and 30 C below zero in winter, and even in a single day the temperature swings wildly, especially in winter.
