Thank you. Why can you not play at least a few seconds of each one? Other KZbinrs do? Also, as a British tenor man, how do you rate any of Andy Sheppard’s many and varied albums. His first, eponymous album single-handedly got me into jazz as a high schooler, and specifically tenor sax, and led me to Coltrane.

Eric Dolphy was technically a better saxophonist than Coltrane.. and I think equally as innovative as Coltrane. I don't think much real innovation can be credited to Brecker, as much as I love listening to his playing.

What a load of crap 💩 that Michael Brecker is better than Coltrane? Brecker’s influence was Coltrane and without Coltrane Brecker wouldn’t have reached the heights. Yeah! I said that! You Dig!
@DanForshaw15 күн бұрын
Define 'better' I believe Brecker was more of a virtuoso than Coltrane. Maybe you could make some content explaining your opinion...
@gardinselmer100514 күн бұрын
Breaker took what Coltrane innovated and injected it with steroids on a level no one else has even come close to achieving. He was like the Einstein of jazz. E = harmonic complexity squared.

Used to write stuff out in all 12 keys, might again soon so I can drill licks in by sheer repetition. However, hearing myself play a lick whilst soloing at home, stopping the song and taking it through multiple keys solely by ear has been transformative. It's permanently changing my musical hearing And thinking.

@@JeffreySaxophoneTallNewtonterrible advice lmao the point of licks isn’t to be like “oh I have the perfect lick for this ii-V-I” the point of licks is the same as transcriptions. It’s to get the sound of jazz in your ears and under your fingers. Licks are just bite sized versions of transcriptions that are best implemented into your improv through repetition, and experimentation. Same goes for patterns and literally anything else .

Listening to Brecker one hears that he built on a "Coltrane foundation."

Yes, took it to another level. No disrespect to the great John Coltrane, Michael Brecker just unshackled himself and set free his inner demons or emotions. I never get tired of listening to MB and love to work on his licks. Impressions on McCoy Tyners Infinity record is a must.
Now I know he is aware of one major flaw-but doesn’t point it out. On many of the tunes at the end of the chorus they avoid playing a V7 or a turnaround to link to another chorus. The reason is that all these tracks are one recorded chorus that can be looped of course as much as you like. But to allow a seamless link to a final ending measure-at the end of a series of loops- they leave out the turnaround as this would mess up the final ending phrase. The result is that when playing multiple chorus you have to listen to this ambiguous sort of cord bridging the various chorus. Now this could’ve been avoided by they’re having recorded two courses of each tune-or at least two versions of the last few measures-so for loop courses, they would include the turnaround and then for the final chorus they would simply use the final ending. But as always, this entails more work and more cost. But given the otherwise very high-level of production, excellent playing good swing feel, they really miss the opportunity to have something that comes very close to perfect. I just wonder why more people don’t point this out is it a deficiency in their hearing of harmony?

As a Brazilian I can tell the Portuguese-sung bossa nova sounds very strange. I mean everything's there - the words, the themes, the chords. But it lacks something, it doesn't sound right, maybe too polished. I don't think AI-generated music will ever be as appealing as music written and performed by people to people my generation and older. But since mainstream music has become so overproduced (with autotune and 15 writers each song) the younger generations who have been exposed to this kind of music mostly in their lives will embrace it more readily.

Hi Dan, I went to Syos last Summer: I tested 10-15 mouth pieces on my yanagizawa tenor sax and after benchmarking all of them, I finally chose yours: I love the deep soft, matt sound it produces (especially when using java red reeds from vandhoren) and all the notes have become so easy to play on my yanagizawa (which is a great brand). Thank you for your fruitfull collaboration with Syos!

Thanks! Which alto do you prefer, Yani or Supreme?
@billducker7404Ай бұрын
Thanks Dan great video. I have never seen the Supreme but I am sure it is fantastic. Please don’t get rid of your 6 unless you have to. You make a great sound on it. My first alto many years ago was a 6 and I sold it when I fell on hard times and never found a better alto but the rest of your life you can’t keep looking over your shoulder. Take your time making your decision as you’ll probably never be able to get another great Mark 6 but there are Supreme Saxophones available for some time to come. God bless you and yours. Have a great Christmas Dan. Bill. Uk 🎷🎷

why arent you using a A Better Route Planner ? A tesla Model Y also would have had a far better range for long journeys. But yea probably best for a journey like this to use a Diesel. The Eqb has pretty bad range tbh.

I have been using your Syos Signature for my soprano sax for 2 years now and I am always enthusiastic about it, even though I have tried so many mouthpieces. Your Syos Signature is the absolute reference for me.

There seems to be a difference of opinion re clamps. The G sharp pad usually sticks In my experience because it is left closed and not allowed to dry open. When I put a cotton pad or other device so that the pad dries open (see keyleaves etc) I have no problem ever with G sharp sticking and this is across a number of horns. Have you noticed this or anything similar? I use a really good swab 2-3 times after each playing. So, does the use of key clamps cause more pad sticking??
@DanForshaw2 ай бұрын
Clamps seem to help the pads seal better and I've not (in 9 months of using them) noticed anything sticking more than usual, except for the G#!

Why vinegar? Vinegar is definitely not good for the octave valve because it is very aggressive and makes leather and rubber brittle. Cold water with a drop of washing-up liquid, followed by a dry wipe, is sufficient. And not every 20 years ;), but maybe once a month.
@bobblues11582 ай бұрын
I keep my horns clean, just like Greg but with a couple of different tricks. i save a fortune on adjustments by my techs. They told me that cleaning the horn because of neglect by the owner takes them more time than the actual adjustment. Because to clean the pads they have to dismantle the horn to to do a cleaning that could have been avoided by very simple cleaning after every playing session.

Good one! I've always noticed how Whistle While You Work sounds like a mixolydian scale. However, if we start the melody line on G and say it's in G mixolydian, the melody always resolves back to C so wouldn't it be more correct to say it's in C major?
