It's different. Proxmox backup or snapshot takes instance and creates full backup out of it - all of it. HA backup actually just stores data & settings together with versions you had installed. When you restore Proxmox backup, it will restore the system as is, completely. HA restore will take data & settings from backup and download the rest of the files from the internet. End result may be the same but the process is not.

Can't say I am very keen on this new backup system. I already have automated daily backups using an automation and it backs up to my Nas too. It sounds like the new system wont support that and insists on encryption too that I don't want or need.

Mandatory encryption. Cloud based key recovery. What happened to open and local?
@BeardedTinker18 минут бұрын
Not sure we are talking about the same thing. Backup is not stored in the cloud unless you set it up. And encryption key is generated and stored locally. But again, maybe we are not talking about the same thing...
@BeardedTinker16 минут бұрын
You probably missed that NAS storage for backup will be supported - actually it is already supported in code but as of Beta 4 of 2025.1, there is still no integration for NAS (or AWS/Google/Azure or other cloud or local option) that is using this option.

You know, I was shocked at first--by both the HAVPE and the absence of facial accoutrements--but, I've come to a realization: My beard is officially longer now! Looks good, makes you much younger looking for sure. And, as always, great work on the video and thanks for all the info!

I have followed the procedure for the HAOS install of a second instance, and I think if found that the config path in the configuration must also be changed from the default. Is it possible that you have missed this in your video, or that HA add-on has changed since then?
@BeardedTinkerКүн бұрын
You're absolutely right! Somehow I managed to cut it out of the video. Yes, you need to change configuration path where file for each instance is located. If I'm not mistaken, that's the first line on top.
@ShellyfiКүн бұрын
If anyone have tested, is that scheduled backups work only with HAOS or is that available also for other installations like docker?
@BeardedTinkerКүн бұрын
Just checked beta channel - yes, autobackup works. Of course with limitations of Docker setup (no addons, no external shares etc)
@iainhay2823Күн бұрын
Great video but omg I dislike the need for encryption key . If someone is in my house or system then they can do way more damage directly there than the risk caused by an ha backup. The risk of me losing such a key is far more damaging. For backups on the cloud yes it’s needed but for local no, it should be in my control and my decision. Probably the first ha decision I’ve ever truly hated, others will of course disagree!
@BeardedTinkerКүн бұрын
That's why I mentioned it in video... I know a lot of people dislike it, but we have to take into account people that don't know what they are doing and they'll probably push backup to cloud without encryption. my wild guess, release or two in future, we could get this option with big warning.
@iainhay2823Күн бұрын
@@BeardedTinker I hope so I have a terrible track record of losing such emergency keys 😂

I'm not going to upgrade to 2025 until it has been out for a couple of months so we see what issues arise from the mandatory encryption keys.

Love the fact that they are locking my out of my own data in a backup while version control of yaml files and ESPhome is still missing
@iainhay28236 сағат бұрын
@@big-ted-01 That would certainly be nice! This backup key is super annoying though. I'm sure BT is right and will get an update to opt out of it with it set as a default. In general the backup improvement is a good thing and it's nice to see work on this.

Thank you very much! I've been struggling with HA in a Synology NAS virtual machine for a few days now. I decided to transfer two systems running on a raspberry. In the first few hours it detected several Zigbee devices, while adding more, I saw a series of errors in zigbee2MQTT. The errors quickly disappeared and I couldn't figure out what happened. It took a few long, long days, and a lot of frustration. Restoring an earlier snapshot of the virtual machine, reconfiguring, switching the zigbee adapter to the next port, etc. I was looking for a solution on the internet and finally came across your KZbin. The solution to my problem was served on a plate :D Thank you very much again and I wish you all the best.😁👍👍👍

This was VERY helpful not only for HA and was explaint excellently! Q: Did you ever measure the real power consumption of the cam? Want to run it with PV and battery on roof.
@BeardedTinkerКүн бұрын
Thank you and I'm glad it helped. No, I haven't measured it - but it depends if the IR is on or LEDs. I will try to remember to do so in future - at that time, location where it was located didn't have ways to do that easily, but can do it now.

Just FYI Thomas Lovén the creator of browser mod has completely re-done this integration and it is now browser mod 2. if you search for browser mod the correct github will come up. This is really only important if you are still running the original since it will need to be completely removed before you can install the latest one.

I'm running it in HA OS, not in Docker - preferring OS directly as it makes it easier to maintain and also add addons without the need to configure anything extra.

Your videos are always positive and punchy. No wasted time. Well done. Also well done on acknowledging panic attacks. They’re just (“just”) a health issue, but like all health issues there are strategies that can mitigate the condition, and like all health issues, they should come first. Regarding glasses, I’d worn glasses for shortsightedness for many decades, so I could see small stuff up close really well. Then cataract surgery gave me damn near perfect vision for middle and far distances, but I struggle focusing on the tip of the soldering iron. Ah, the joys of ageing. Take care.
