I thought about trying a gutter antenna because I read so many good results. So I tried connecting the center lead of the coaxial cable to the HF radio and the shield to either nothing or ground. I received no signals at all. I received lots of signals with a 20 meter resonant dipole that was only 4 feet above the ground, that was laying on top of a hedge. I’m assuming that I should be able to receive some signals without the antenna matching device. I’m guessing that my rain gutters are grounded somewhere. I didn’t want to buy the antenna matching part if the gutter was grounded. Another idea that I thought about trying, but didn’t try is running a wire for the antenna parallel to the rain gutters, parallel to the rain gutters, laying on the shingles, periodically glued or attached to the shingles. But I didn’t try that idea yet. So far, the non-resonant offset flagpole antenna, without radials, with a remote antenna tuner, works good enough. But it would be nice to have a second stealth antenna.

@daveborchard2019

I tried connecting my HF radio coaxial cable center directly to my metal downspout without a matching device. I received nothing. I suspect that my gutters are grounded. Could you try bypassing the matching device? Could you determine the difference on receiving with and without the match? Tfe FT8 mode doesn’t take much of an antenna. I could easily get a lot of contacts with FT8 and a resonant 20 meter dipole at only 4 feet above the ground. But the flagpole antenna works much better.
@prephampaul
@prephampaul 11 күн бұрын
I think that's a good idea to try. I'll try to get to it soon and see what happens, I would assume the SWR at the radio would be much higher, perhaps not even tunable without a match but hey, let's find out!

Paul, at 2:55 we see the spike for the 70cm band, and while the display is much cleaner than in the previous video, we are still looking BELOW the fundamental and not the "harmonics" of the fundamental. At 3:33 when you test harmonics of the 2M band, we see the 1st harmonic that is nearly as strong as the fundamental and this is an obvious failure of the bandpass filter within the HT. Therefore it is not FCC compliant and could place the ham operator in a position of fines and loss of license. There are many YT videos that explain how to set up the TinySA for a harmonic measurement. Josh (NAZ), the Smokin' Ape, Hayden and the designer of the TinySA (Erik Kaashoek) all have excellent videos showing the correct procedure. 73 OM

I'm not sure why the software screen shows different than the screen on the TinySA. Here are two screen shots that show the -16.02 line that doesn't show on the software screen but on the 2m it shows a 2nd above but the third below and on the 70cm you can see the 2nd below the line so it seems cleaner on 70 than 2m but still. thoughts? drive.google.com/drive/folders/18_-XzSW9LFkx9QZPdJV32VUJAgEOiUUd?usp=sharing

97.307(e) states: For a transmitter having a mean power of 25 W or less, the mean power of any spurious emission supplied to the antenna transmission line must not exceed 25 µW and must be at least 40 dB below the mean power of the fundamental emission..." The 25 µW level is equivalent to 16.02 db. So, any harmonics should both A) not produce more than 16.02 db and be at least 40db below the fundamental. I've never used a NanoVNA and I'm watching this on my phone, but the harmonic at 3:15 appears to be well above that standard. Am I wrong about that? I can't see the db levels even with my old man glasses on.

Would be helpful to do a step by step guide to how to register an account..... You bypassed that because you already registered, but not all of us have. It seems that you need to make an initial contact/email to finalize the registration process, or am I mistaken. If you do need to make that first email to finalize the registration process, how do we do that in Japan or maybe other country that may not have a lot of Winlink servers?

I also always wrap with plastic tape first, then wrap with self-amalgamating tape. Otherwise the amalgamating tap gets really sticky and makes a mess when trying to take the connector off. The plastic tape is easy to take off the connector. I would put a hook on that grey box and hang the blue color cable/connections on it to keep them off the ground...water and snow are not good covers for the connections.

So it's protecting against too much voltage coming from the amp into the radio? Or am I getting that wrong? And why would voltage be going to the radio from the amp?
@prephampaul

Not the voltage it protects the radio by reducing the RF drive level of the exciter to prevent damage to the amplifier's input through the ALC interface.
