This railway was meant to be closed down in the eighties but with thatcher closures of the mines they started importing coal from Poland so the train you saw was bringing the coal from the docks to around wavertree and edgehill
@ScouseFarm52 минут бұрын
Yes, it was a Drax Car being pulled so it's full of power station coal. Thanks for watching.

Wow! Another fascinating video. Brilliant that mate. The balls of those railwaymen…… I believe when one of them was asked why he didn’t run away, he said he wouldn’t have been able to run far enough to a place of safety if any more were going to blow up, so he stayed and split the train, leaving the burning wagons where they stood so the fire couldn’t spread and cause the others to explode. 👍

My Nanna, Mum and Aunties all lived through the Blitz mate, they lived just off the bottom of Hill St, near the dock Rd. My Mum said it was a terrible and frightening time, something we, I am glad to say, can't comprehend. Another city that got hammered, that you don't often hear about, is Belfast. They too had the docks and a lot of heavy engineering factories, all vital to the War effort. One of the RAF Bases that was there was RAF Maze, it was the biggest one in Ireland and would later become the site of Long Kesh, the internment camp, used during The Troubles in Northern Ireland. It was then where the new prison was built HMP Maze, infamously known as The H Blocks.
@ScouseFarmСағат бұрын
True, you don't hear hardly anything about the Belfast attacks. Even to this day we both seem to be way down the list when people talk about German bombing raids during the 40s. Thanks for watching.

Thanks for the video, Tony! I think the pronunciation for Poitiers (if that is the word) is PWAH-tee-ay? The Bodleian or Gough Map is named after George Gough, a late medieval map of unknown date that was donated to the Bodleian Library in Oxford! That flat iron building in Prescott reminds me of a larger building in NYC that was also named ‘flat iron’ because of its shape! Trees again? Sorry! This time there are a few Lime trees (with smooth, light grey bark). Thanks again, mate!
@ScouseFarmКүн бұрын
Cheers mate, yep, I know about the Bodlein Map, The Prescot Council had incorrect information as they state it was written by Gough but it wasn't. It only acquired his name because he bought it hundreds of years after it was created. Glad you enjoyed it, it was an icy little walkabout.

Great video. We pop into the spoons in prescot now and again. This area has so much potential. Just past the flat iron ( the building you looked at ) are grave stones?? Is it a mystery ? I wonder if anyone knows why the graves appear to be isolated ? No church nearby ? I hope someone knows the answer?

Super interesting mate, that was fascinating. Cock fighting continued there until fairly modern times….. there was a pub called the fusilier at the junction of Warrington Road and St Helens Road…… cocks frequently travelled from far and wide to participate in such there and I believe that is what lead to the revocation of the licence and ultimate closure. You’ve just proven that time travel is possible….. you’ve travelled back at least thirty years there. 👍 I hope you returned to give the busker something, broken fingers would have been best. 🤣🤣🤣

I've seen rose-ringed parakeets in both Sefton Park and Newsham park. In the summer I see them eating the pears from my neighbour's tree. There is an often repeated story that Britain's parakeets are the offspring of birds that escaped in the 1950s from the filming of The African Queen. That might be partially true for the flocks around London but doesn't explain the populations in city parks all across the country. The boring but probably true answer is they are escaped/released pets or pet shops getting rid of unwanted stock for one reason or another.
@ScouseFarm2 күн бұрын
Yep, a lot of people have commented on seeing parakeets all over that area. The ones I spotted were being chased by some Magpies :). I didn't know about the 'legend' of the African Queen escapees so thanks for the info, and thanks for watching.

I want to say a big thanks to the member of staff who joined me on my walk (she didn't want to go on camera so I'm not mentioning her name). If you haven't been before, get yourselves down and have a look in the cafe and shop for some Beatles memorabilia, and if you want, you can buy a ticket to take the full Guided Tour. Access to the cafe, shop, and garden area is FREE, and there's lots to see on site. If you wish to read up on the history, or get some further information on ticket prices (or how to make a donation), have a look at the links in the video description above. Enjoy 🌹

Infuriates me this. It's not Kirkdale, it's Vauxhall. Short history lesson. Boundary Street is the boundary between Liverpool & Kirkdale (before Liverpool expanded). North of the bridge is Kirkdale.
@ScouseFarm2 күн бұрын
Ok mate, I stand corrected. Please take it up with Google, Yellow Pages, Apple Maps, Historic-Liverpool, The Leeds to Liverpool Canal Bridge reference, and the A to Z which have it listed as Kirkdale. I'm not from there, I'm also not a historian, I'm just a lad with a phone filming on KZbin as a hobby. I research videos to get some quick information before filming and use open source information. Every article I read said it is Kirkdale, as did google maps when I checked where the bridge was. The 'boundary' was moved 1 mile north where Liverpool City ends and Sefton begins (according to historic-Liverpool). If the articles I read are incorrect it isn't my fault. Thanks for watching.

We love our Liverpool history! The trees were two of your favorites, mate - a large deciduous Wych Elm, also known as a Scots Elm; once very common in Northern England, and the ‘pine tree’ is a Monkey Puzzle tree! Remember that one? I also noticed many silver birch trees and beech trees! The visitor center reminds me of the center attached to the church at Daresbury where they have a dedication to Lewis Carroll the author of Alice in Wonderland; he was baptized in the church! They have a stained glass window with Alice and the Dodo bird! It’s really good to see that the people of Liverpool are supported by these initiatives! It’s a shame that many large manor houses in the UK were demolished over the years! Thanks for the video, mate! It was great!

The Salvation Army turned me away when I was soaking wet aged 15 after my drunk “father” battered me and kicked me out in the middle of the night with no shoes or coat. I went to the Salvation Army Hostel on Prescot Road/Church Road in Stanley and they wouldn’t even let me in out of the rain because I had no money and wasn’t on benefits. I stayed in a dog kennel in an empty house for three days and nights…… charity hey? Thinking about it years later, I guess I was safer in the dog kennel. Hahaha.
