Pssst! There's a whole sport disproving bunkai. It's called MMA.

There's a whole style which beats MMA fighters in proven seminars going back to the 1990s and much earlier than that: It's called Isshinryu Karate. It was found that Isshinryu karate fighters were on average 2 belt ranks better than Gracie Jiu Jitsu fighters in open seminars in 1992 and again in several other open seminars through 2000. I've tapped out professional MMA fighters 5 out of 6 rolls with them in their own gyms thanks to what this man, Michael Calandra is teaching and thanks to what my original Isshinryu instructors taught me in the 1990s and early 2000. The speaker is a police officer and has used these techniques literally 1000 times in street policing situations, and you have the audacity to claim it doesn't work. I think I'll trust the retired police officer, instead of some internet troll. P.S. I trained with Royce Gracie's first cousin in Gracie Jiu Jitsu for about 1.5 years all together, and they teach literally NOTHING that isn't already taught as part of the Isshinryu combat system.

Also, I was my second Sensei's demonstration partner for about 3 years, and I can tell you first hand that these techniques work, and they hurt like hell, and you WILL tap out to it instinctively when it's applied to you. Anyone claiming Isshinryu bunkai doesn't work has never had it done to them.

That version of Naihanchi is interesting. It looks very old. I've always wanted to find out more about Naihanchi, because it doesn't seem to come from China like many other Kata. Do you have more information about the origin of Naihanchi?

Great! When someone said traditional okinawan karate doesnt work vs wrestling/jujitsu grabs and holds, forget that was developed in a country having his traditonal wrestling(tegumi)and in a time when sumo and jujutsu were diffused largely.

That was a very good insight to your style of Karate. But it was a disappointment that it was out of focus throughout the video.

Thank you thank you!!!! These warm ups and drills just brought me back home. I trained shorin ryu shidokan dojo under Shiroma sensei (guam) in 1982 - 2004 and then on/off there after. The late Iha Sensei (Michigan, recently passed away last month) and GM Katsuya Miyahira (okinawa) whom I fall under/lineage. I recently returned to Karate but in Shotokan, and at 51 yrs old, I need to warm up and do drills like these every day.

Pulling against a pull will work if you are bigger and stronger than your opponent. If you are not, you are simply pulling his punch toward you while you are doing nothing to block the incoming punch. I’m 5’6” and I think it is Christmas when my opponent pulls me into him, no matter how big he is. That aside you are right that this opening represents several ways to defend against a grab. but as you say, you should work on the fundamentals and basic physics before trying to learn various techniques.

Respect. I love these live applications of Karate kata. The first one, low frame and throw by, is exactly what I was taught in GJJ self defense curriculum. Although I currently train BJJ I still have great admiration and fascination for traditional Karate.
