Thanks for this - I'll give it a try tomorrow. The Mk3 Focus (mine's an Ecoboost) might be a lovely car to drive, but it's beset with design faults that Ford refuse to help with (though they're happy to charge a fortune to fix them). Wetbelt cambelt, leaky heater matrix seals, perishing coolant pipes and door seals falling off! So this boot leak one doesn't surprise me at all.

I bought a 2014 mk3 focus last week, noticed the rear passenger footwells were waterlogged yesterday. I seen you video and took the bungs out this morning, the amount of water that came flooding out was unreal! I may take the bumper off to seal the vents at some point but for now, this will do. I also removed the spare wheel and put towels in there to soak up the swimming pool that had built up. Thank you so much for this quick and easy fix!!

After last nights horrific rainfall, I checked under the spare wheel in the boot this morning to find that it was full of water again. This is after I removed the rubber bungs and insulation yesterday to let the water drain. Looks like I'm going to have to take the bumper off and seal. fuming with Ford.

Oh wow, sorry, that was a long time ago. I ended up replacing my camera - it never stopped crashing, and I couldn't afford the risk. Much as I loved the split, I went back to separate cameras for analogue FPV and HD.

Andrew, I make my stems longer, and together, inside and out. This allows a longer brass rubbing strip to extend further, where it really will help the durability of the keel line. Also, I use a spokeshave to draw the profile of the outer stem into shape. Drawing the blade here offers far greater (more precise) control of matters.
@adpsimpson
@adpsimpson 2 ай бұрын
Thanks, very interesting. I can see why having the stems, & brass strip, further down along the keel would make sense. There was so much to learn, I'd never used half the tools involved before! Thanks again

This is a good fix for a while but after a short time the vents loosen as the car vibrates on the road...I've left the bung plugs off so hoping any water that does get in just runs right out the car now. 🤞🏻🤞🏻 shoddy ford workmanship

Great vid, i think mine i just bought has this problem. It also has a dodgy air temperature reading. Shows about 10c lower. I got someone to connect a diagnostic device and it corrected the temp, but an hour later it dropped againm will it be a dodgy sensor or on board computer

I know nothing about woodworking... but I know bushcraft. When using a steel, instead of pushing the spine of the knife forward, pull the steel backward. This way, you don't knock the tinder out of the way of the sparks. I hope you find that useful for what it's worth.

Silly question, Im sure... but how common are canoes on that side of the pond? Over here in the US, they are everywhere, but it's what the natives used, and we ran with it because they work so well for us.
@adpsimpson
@adpsimpson 5 ай бұрын
Sorry, missed this comment. They're certainly not as common as your side of the pond, but not rare either. Any outdoor activity centre will have them, so most people who get outdoors will know how to paddle. Cedar strip ones are very rare though - they're mostly plastic.

My Ford focus hatchback SE also leaks in the boot and has for years gathers under the spare tire. Additionally I had the transmission control module go out which took Ford 7 months to get one in and fixed. Needless to say I will not be buying another Ford probably ever. Also problems with my Ford F-150.

So I have a similar situation in a ford fiesta 2013, rear trunk area is damp everywhere smells of mold and the rear footwells are wet, both sides. I poured water in the rear drains and it was coming out of the seatbelt area, ever seen that?
@adpsimpson

Sorry, not seen that in the focus, but it doesn't surprise me. You'll need to find where it's getting in, and seal that up. Likely areas are light fittings, boot strut mounts, etc.

Hard to believe that such a common issue with such a popular car hasn’t been identified by all ford garages and ford themselves? Is the problem the same in the mk4? I had sorted the issue the same way before seeing this vid and in addition to resealing the vents I drilled a hole in the grommet to allow any excess water to flow out. As a quick fix I can’t see why anyone couldn’t just push that grommet to one side from below the car and leave it out permanently as the hole is behind the wheel arch liner and shouldn’t allow road water in….. I had to take out the entire interior and dry for a week! Thanks Ford 🙄 and also for the badly glued door seals I see hanging out everywhere 🤬

Same problem on my 2011 MK3 focus, was wondering why my windows had so much condensation on a decent day for weeks. Only noticed yesterday my carpets in the front and rear are soaked, must be at least 3 litres inside the cabin. Took the plugs out and both sides were like niagra falls, what a stupid design flaw with those vents, not a lot of water in the wheel well, not surprised as its all in the front. Going to take weeks to dry the cabin. Haven't removed the insulation yet but will be doing that today.

Before ‘glassing the interior and exterior, how did you address the gaps caused by cove and tennon? Or did you simply allow the resin to fill those “gaps”? Thank you!
@adpsimpson
@adpsimpson 5 ай бұрын
Sorry, missed this. There are very few gaps - there shouldn't be any really. The bead and cove profile is round, so the strips fit perfectly at any angle. The whole thing is then sanded & smoothed extensively before glassing. Any small cracks can be filled with epoxy mixed with thickener.

I really appreciate your videos, it helps me a lot! I think I have a similar issue with the glue: since it is quite cold at night in my shop, the glue inside the joint gets white and it doesn't feel very strong, even though the squeeze out had plenty of time to dry at the proper temperature. How did it go in the end with your canoe? Did you experience any weakness due to the glue chalking? Or does the epoxy and fiberglass solves it all?
@adpsimpson
@adpsimpson 5 ай бұрын
Sorry, need to check my comments more regularly.... I'm sure you're well past this stage by now, but I had no problems in the end - the fibreglass and epoxy provides all the final strength needed.

Thankyou for making this video. I have long covid and spent every penny I had on a 12 plate focus . It only has 36000 miles on the clock and everything runs well . Happy until I found the left side saturated right down to the passenger footwell. Under warranty I took it back . He said he fixed it clearly not it's soaking . I am taking it back on Tuesday . Came with a 3 month warranty. The coachwork guy is an arrogant a**hole

Warranties are frustrating when you have to rely on someone you don't trust. If the warranty is provided by an independent company, you could always phone them directly to talk about getting it fixed elsewhere?

I've had this problem with a 2011 focus Titanium for about two years. First of all my usual garage sealed the rear lights - didn't fix it. Then I saw a similar video to this one (although not as comprehensive) on KZbin and took the car back to the garage again, to seal the vents under the rear bumper. Worked for about two months but the leak is now back again. There's no way I could do this repair myself, but I see someone saying a Ford dealer is quoting £600 to fix what is obviously a universal fault. Having had no joy with my usual garage, where should I take the car to make sure the job is done properly? I was hoping to sell the car this year as it has under 70k miles, MOT till next December and generally has given me no bother other than this irritating glitch. I wouldn't in all conscience sell it on without making a buyer aware, so I just want it sorted once and for all, but not at a price that makes no sense relative to the car's value.

Try the "quick and dirty" solution - just remove the bungs. Then the water can't accumulate,.so the problem disappears. See my other video linked in the description.
