I'm surprised their dance wasn't put to music. Rather cute, aren't they? Their pouches show them well fed. At the end, when the one tried to start something again, Mom gave "that look" and he settled down. Thanks for the glimpse into their life.

Why does the mom allow her to treat her like that

It's actually POSITIVE behavior in an eaglet, who will need to be aggressive and feisty and ready to fight to survive on its own. I'm not suggesting the parents consciously think "good, good, keep it up, kid!" when the eaglets fuss and squeal and fly at them, but it's expected and accepted behavior. At NEFL 3 years ago Gabby seemed to try to taunt and tease her solo, slightly spoiled and easy-going eaglet to make it behave MORE aggressively about food! Once it had a lesson and passed the follow-up pop quiz, Gabby appeared satisfied that she was raising a fierce little raptor with the skills it would need. kzbin.info/www/bejne/bqfEgZt7hpehZ7s and kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp-vZJqEf8ilg9U

Yes they are missed by so many! One thing cams have showed us over time is that change at eagle nests is much more common than many had thought.

Is it possible that gabby wanted to eat the fish?
@cmitchell8106

We can't see inside their heads of course, but what struck me is that Gabby is bigger, stronger, faster, and more experienced, and if she simply wanted the fish she could have taken it away instantly. (We'd seen her do that with Samson many times.) She waited and watched for a long time, and then made her move. It's always speculative when we attribute motives to animals who can't talk and tell us if we're right, but it feels right, especially combined with the follow-up a few days later: kzbin.info/www/bejne/fp-vZJqEf8ilg9Usi=vH34wuzhU9EbAwZr Again in this video Gabby could take the fish away instantly if she wanted it, but she waits until Legacy's attention starts to wander - and then she gives up quickly when Legacy demonstrates that the lesson about fighting back to keep your own food has been well-learned! Gabby seemed to be satisfied that Legacy had graduatted from her "fight for your food class" with a good grade, and I didn't see her repeat the behavior.

WOW!! Those little Eaglets weren’t gonna give up with their wrestling!😳. They w r actually kinda funny and the parent came and was looking at them as if to say, “well, they have to learn somehow. They were Sue going at each other too and it didn’t look too harsh too so that is a good thing. Tough little bigger aren’t they?😂😂 Hope all continued to go well too.🦅🦅🦅🦅❤️🙏🥰❌⭕️

Omg this is giving me flashbacks to the Fort St. Vrain nest where a raccoon took an eaglet and the mama had to flush him out so it didn’t get the other eaglet.

My guess: young, still learning, and very, very hungry. 🙂 Later it will learn to buzz the eagles without the food-fight element - happens at lots of nests, maybe to establish that just because they're smaller they still deserve respect, & maybe just for the fun of it: kzbin.info/www/bejne/jWOal59vgsZra7c

The nest is in Loudoun County, Virginia and the Christmas 2022 Loudoun County Bird Count totaled 67 bald eagles! Obviously not all close to this nest - the county covers about 500 sq miles - but still quite a lot of eagles within a 20 mile or so radius of the nest.
